Houdini used this system with bottleneck cuffs - that famous photo of him climbing into the packing crate on the wharf, for instance...and "bridge jumper" legirons, too. I think sometimes we get too concerned with having cuffs checked/examined etc by the specs. Anyone agree? Regards Riley |

Hum, I do not own De-Val Pullmans but I'm almost 100% sure the ones I have are not an interior gimmick. I'll PM you Riley on the gimmick I have.

Hi Shawn,
I have an antique pair of bridge jump darbys once owned and used by Houdini himself. On these, there is no internal spring or locking bolt. These components have been removed. Rather, the bow arm of the cuff has been bent slightly in and the locking toe of the bow has a slight groove filed into it. In this way, when the cuffs are pressed shut they will actually "snap" rather loudly as the groove in the toe of the bow arm rises up over the slot cut into the locking barrel of the cuff and owning to the slight bend in the bow of the cuff it then snaps down and holds rather firmly. It takes a VERY strong tug to open these cuffs. I do not know if this is the same method you and Riley have been talking about but if not then this is just another way or working with antique darby cuffs. It seems that Houdini was not taking any chances and wanted a cuff that would pull open no matter what. No real suprise there ! Regards, Steve Santini |
