I'm on Jay Sankey's mailing list. Yesterday I got an eMail from him stating that I could join the "Inside Deceptions" team for FREE, but ONLY this weekend!
Well, I knew that I wasn't going to get a year for free, but I figured that I would get a weekend for free, or maybe an entire week for free. So I click on the provided link, and this is what I see: ************* DON'T MISS THE WORLD PREMIERE! The official preview for the 'Inside Deception' training site is HERE! Be among the first in the world this awesome NEW video now! http://bit.ly/Z4hcQB FREE? REALLY? (YOU DO THE MATH.) Starting Monday March 18, the price for a 1-Year Membership to 'Inside Deception' goes up to $119. But for this weekend only, you can still join for JUST $99. And that includes $75 of DVDs, gimmicks + e-products, PLUS the cost of WORLD-WIDE SHIPPING (another $15 bucks) PLUS a year-long 20% discount off the entire line of Sankey Magic products. Which means, even if you only buy $50 of stuff at Sankey Magic over the next year, you're basically getting a 1-Year Membership for FREE! 365 days of exclusive online training...FREE! ************* So there he goes again, deceiving the deceivers. I should have known better! If I pay the $99 AND spend $50 on his website over the next year, I'll be getting $75 worth of gimmicks,$15 worth of shipping and a 20% discount on my $50 worth of purchases. So joining "Inside Deceptions" is FREE. But, if I've done the math correctly, if I join any time after this weekend and spend $150 on his website, joining "Inside Deceptions" is still FREE! As a matter of fact, he'll be paying me $1 to join! If I spend $200, he'll be paying me $11 to join. What kind of twisted logic is this? This is why I've had enough of JS. :bat: |

Per this logic, spend $1,000,000,000,000 on his website and you'll OWN him!

Well, I used to like him, and want to again. I have at least a handful of tricks that I learned from him that I like to perform. Some really good stuff. But that ended several years ago. I haven't been satisfied by anything from him in quite a while.
If what he's offering is good, I want it. If he was truly offering "Inside Deception" for free (you know, a trial period), I'd take it. Why not? But it's not free. I'm just kind of PO'd by how he heads his eMails with "Join Inside Deception for free- this weekend only!". That's the heading, word for word. I don't think he knows what free is. $100 for a shot in the dark is not worth it to me. Take the iffy stuff out of the picture with a free trial, and maybe I'm in. This SEEMS like it could be good. But, then again, picking up that hot pot off of the stove yesterday seemed alright too. I've considered dropping him from my eMail list, but I just can't pull the trigger. :bat: |

This email finally convinced me to ask to be taken off his mailing list.

One thing that turned me off was the fact that none of the videos can be downloaded. They are streaming only. Since I fly on airplanes frequently for work, I thought it would be great to have them downloaded on my laptop for the flight. But that won't work. Also after the year is up, if you don't want to renew, you can't watch any of the old videos that you've already paid for so you better have already watched them all and committed them to memory. I think based on his emails he's struggling to get subscribers and I can now see why...

I think Jay also teaches his Marketing tips and his is *** good at Marketing!
I like Jay, I like his passion and his thinking! I think this resource is well worth it! I'm guessing there is no downloading videos to avoid piracy, a Shame but understandable. |

I removed myself from Sankey's mailing list in 2011. I had order his Big *** Box o' Magic then changed my mind literally FIVE minutes after ordering it. Jay and his "crew" refused to refund my card even before it was shipped citing protection from exposure! Remember, this was literally 5 minutes AFTER I placed my order and still DAYS before the BABOM was even due to begin shipping. What BS! How can it be exposure if I don't have the product? I know I could fought it and won with my bank and with PayPal. But I thought of a line from the film A Bronx Tale and my 150.00 was a bargain as I am rid of him now. That fiasco brought a lot of heat on him and he lost a few customers, but, it seems nothing has changed.
I used to have great respect for Sankey - especially in jhis earlier days when he was a magician as opposed to a marketing machine. Yes I bought The Definitive Sankey from Vanishing Inc., because I do still recognize the importance of Sankey's magic and the book was nicely written and produced by Andi Gladwin and Joshua Jay. Ironically, Sankey could learn a thing or two about professionalism from dealers like Vanishing, Inc., and others. As I read this thread, I feel awful for the OP who spent his money in good faith andI am pleased to see that others are aware of Sankey's rather opague representations of his promotions. So, I DO like Jay Sankey, but his business practices are loathsome. |

My experience with Jay has been good, but maybe I just got lucky. I made an order which got lost in the mail, so they sent it again and included a free DVD of my choice along with it. I haven't ordered any thing from his site for a few years though. I keep an eye out for his new products, but there hasn't been much that especially interests me.

Jay has used illegal marketing tactics several times in the past to sell his products, and it wouldn't be hard to get a legal refund from just about anything the guy sells if the complaints actually went to the proper channels. Yes Vlad, Paypal would of refunded you with no hassles. Consumers have a lot of rights many are not aware of but should start learning. The magic community is filled with plenty of false advertising. Some just go way to far.
Jay is not a member of BBB, and even though his BBB rating is pretty bad, it makes no difference to Jay because BBB does nothing but give you a rating based on complaints, or lack of them. The proper channels would be the FTC, or consumer protection office. Most customers who feel they've been ripped off from his products or customer service will not do anything about it but complain on a forum or start a facebook page. You can also contact the Canadian consumer advocates. CAC is one that can help you to learn more about your rights as a consumer. Here is an interresting article. It was written about two years ago. Take in mind when reading this piece that many magicians are working in Toronto, and some Toronto magicians travel nationally and internationally. When I read this, I sensed a broken, bitter and fallen man. http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2011/01/......age.html I have no personal grudge towards Jay Sankey. I have noticed on many occasions him resorting to using misleading, deceptive, and false advertising. Jay will try to tell you that what he says in the ad is true, but the reality is, it's not what he says in the ad, but what he fails to tell you in the ad.
Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.

That article is truly sad. He should have declined an interview.

Two hours ago I got another eMail from Jay. I deleted it immediately after reading it, so I can't quote it directly, but the headline in my "In Box" read "A public apology from Jay". I says to myself "Self, Jay is apologizing for the misleading 'Get Inside Deception free' eMail".
I open it up and read it. Boy was I wrong! He apologized for today being the last day to get "Inside Deception" free! I'd curse here if I could. :bat: |

He's one of the worst culprits for using the same old techniques time and time again. All the major complaints about him really tie into this. He's desperate in my opinion to sell his wares by repackaging and offering deals or trying to dress them up with grandiose pseud blatherings that are essentially meaningless or truisms. Bearing in mind that these complaints have been going on for a while it's either that he couldn't care less or more likely that this self proclaimed genius can't think of anything better. |

And that tomorrow it will go up to $119.00. I wonder if the "free $75.00 gift pack" will still be included after the rate goes up. And I wonder if one joins at $99.00, the cost to renew after 1 year will stay at $99.00? For anyone on the fence, then I think it pays to wait (not be an early adopter) and pay the additional $20 if they later decide to join. If you think about it, $99 for 1 year is equal to $8.25 per month. $119 per year is $9.92 per month. So you're only paying an additional $1.67 per month for the safety of waiting to hear feedback, etc. |

Bearing in mind I am no fan of the talking egg but I do have to say that if the supportive element of the package is all its cracked up to be then there could be some real value for less experienced magicians.
