Harley Newman just got done doing a lecture up in Baltimore, MD and man was it awesome!
I wasn't able to see it myself, but Harley did (on Friday night) an exhausting and exhilarating THREE HOUR, yes THREE HOUR ACT that was jam packed full of escapes, stunts, and side show demonstrations full of his own trademark off the wall comedy. Pity I couldn't see it, (I had to work) everyone else was both stunned and raving at the performance. This is a guy who's been tied up more times by more people than likely anyone else on earth. I wouldn't be surprised if he does a few Kellar ties everytime he takes a leak! In any case, what I saw was the FOUR HOUR PLUS lecture at Denny and Lee's shop in East Baltimore. MAN it was a great lecture. It was like being taught by someone who was 1/2 yoda and 1/2 maniac! In any case, I really learned a lot from the lecture. Harley taught about what was wrong with a lot of escape acts, and how things can be improved. Here are a few choice quotes. "Don't tell people that things are real or genuine. Demonstrate it! It's far better to show someone handcuffs are real than to proclaim that they are. Always prove with actions not with words." "If everyone knows what you are going to do, change it up. Create a different middle or a different ending. That's what makes performances interesting." "I don't care what people think when I'm onstage I care what they FEEL." "If people have to ask questions as to what is going on when you are performing, you have failed as a performer. There should be no question what is going on, no question as to what the story is." "Yes, I could easily get out, but that's not INTERESTING. You have to make an escape INTERESTING. If you just get out and say 'Ta Da' you're just bragging. If you struggle, you're interesting." Here are some of the things we did, and what I liked was that we didn't just talk about it, or how it worked, but how to make it theatrical, and how to make it play big. Posey Escape Kellar Tie Oval Principle BJ Cuffs Siberian Chain There was a unique tie he did which I'll just call the "Harley Spool Tie". It was AWESOME. There is literally no space between your hands for this tie, and it passes excruciating examination. Really good stuff. I give this lecture the highest rating, all really great stuff. At the end Harley had some ideas, that he invited us to come up with more one. Great stuff.

Wow, I don't know if this is the biggest kiss up post ever or infringement upon someones intellectual property. You weren't there, according to your post. Then you (probably without his permission) list parts of his lecture (that people had to PAY for) in this, a public forum for ANYONE to see without one red cent going to the author. I've known Harley since early 2000's, you don't. I'd really like to know how he feels about what you've just done.

It's not really that clear, on first reading, but I think that Harley did 2 things that weekend. 1) a 3 hour show on the Friday night (magicbymccauley didn't go to) 2) a 4 hour lecture on Saturday (magicbymccauley did go to). And the comments about the performance are what the people who went to it thought of it and told magicbymccauley. I have apologised to Harley for buying the "Harley Newman on escapes" DVD (from Flora and Company) as I found out, after the fact, that he wasn't too impressed about the DVD being sold and he doesn't get a fair income from that DVD. I offered to burn it and or send it back to him as he has been scr€wed over from that 'arrangement' (or lack of). From what I recall he was asked "do you mind if we video the lecture" but there was no indication of what they wanted to do with the film. The DVD had much more psychology than 'how to' escape. The meat so to speak - the stuff that helps with improving performance, similar to the stuff magicbymccauley posted. So I'm my opinion, Harley has been 'done over' twice now for his escape lecture! One time was selling it on for profit, the other time content has been posted on an open forum for free. I'm not sure which is worse? Hey ho, it's not like Harley Makes his living this way ......oh wait a minute he does! I will gladly retract my opinion of Harley being scr€wed over a second time if Harley gave permission for this stuff to be posted openly on the internet. |

Sorry, I went to the lecture, not the performance. My bad if that was not clear. And I just listed SOME of the stuff he did, there was a LOT more, and the best stuff I'm not talking about.
The way Harley merges technique and performance tips into one whole I found very unique. And the performance instruction was far more important than the methods. This is only some, SOME of the stuff he did, and I can't wait to structure some of the ideas into different things. And I didn't post any METHODS openly for Christ's sake, just a broad sort of outline. It doesn't matter anyway, unless you're directly learning from him, you won't really GET IT. He is an in-person sort of teacher and you can't really absorb the material without him being involved. Some teachers are like that: student to teacher hands on sort of transmission. As far as being a "kiss up" goes, I have many problems in my life, and being a "kiss up" isn't one of them. If I disagree with you, or Harley, or anyone, you are going to know about it in a very direct way. I think I've made that quite clear on here many times. There were a lot of gems in his lecture, a lot of ideas, and a lot of things which won't be divulged here. He had beginners at the lecture and a lot of experts too, everyone left refreshed, feeling creative and as if we'd really accomplished something.

Oh, a bit more...
The Friday show DID have an intermission. Mac, I have no problem with what you posted. The people who weren't there, won't get it. I promised we'd cover a lot of ground, and we did. You'll be processing it for a long time. It was good to meet you!

Thanks for clearing that up, Harley. I do know you and I know how you can get when it comes to your authorship. Glad to know everything went well. I wasn't there, but looking at the original post, it's a lot of what you have already told me in person.

Yes but... When a person starts their paragraphs "in the negative" it sets the tone for what's coming.

Still, a personal attack from one and an offer to retract their statement from the other if proven wrong is no excuse.

Kevin, I'm not offended, it's okay. Like Harley said, he's a one-on-one teacher. What he's teaching is hands on and involved, and many people already knew the methods when they went to the lecture. What Harley really taught was the physical details of how to hide the method, how to make it seem like there was no method, and how to present the piece and make it look difficult. You can't ever communicate that without physically working with the teacher on the props. In that way it was a very martial arts approach.
As far as apologies go, I don't need them, I would be much happier if Nippulini and Dave simply would give me the benefit of the doubt in the future. I plan to meet every single person on this forum and learn from them. Next week I am going to LA and we'll see if I can drop by the House of Enchantment and see Curtis' studio. When people meet me, they usually realize that I'm a nice guy and not a hack. But, like I said, benefit of the doubt on here sometimes is lacking.

Kevin, no attack was meant. I actually know how certain people can get REALLY ticked off about repeating things learned..... I was just looking out in Harley's best interest, which ended up not being needed at all. So I don;t have to apologize to anyone.
