We all know the magician's code (practice, a good magician never reveals his secret, etc).
What should our code be? 1. Use our 6th sense. 2. Use common sense. |

The Mentalist Code.
Remain disciplined. Conduct yourself ethically as a mentalist. Practice courtesy and respect. Serve your audience and respect your subject. Love your fellow students. Be united and avoid conflicts. Train diligently. Maintain your skills. Develop tranquility. Abstain from arguments and fights. Participate in society. Be moderate and gentle in your manners. Help the weak and young. Use mentalism for the good of humanity. Pass on the tradition. Preserve this art and it's rules of conduct. Anthony

Also consider 'The 17 Musts' of Head Hacking.
Right attitude. Right intention. Right effort. Right action. Be firm with instructions. Be clear with suggestions. Be meaningful when communicating ideas. Be artfully vague only when necessary. Be accurate with timing. Be the master of personal space. Be alert with your eyes. Coordinate your words and actions. Unite your actions and intentions. Thinking must be agile. Reaction must be swift. Comprehend the principles of push and pull. Be still. Be grounded. Walk don't run. Pace and lead. Be steady with your breathing and strength. Be commanding with your demeanour. Test your work. Be sure to end clean. Anthony

Don't steal or expose methods in public. Don't present material that is only half-practiced.
Remember that you're supposed to be entertaining. And always check your fly. Good thoughts, Bob |

Read a couple of torrented E books
Tell your granny what playing card she's thinking of Print some business cards Join the Magic Café under a made up name Ask for secrets to things you've seen on youtube Write an e book about how putting the pen back in your left pocket is such a vast improvement in misdirection than putting it in your right pocket Sell e book for $50 Start to believe you know better than seasoned pros you can fill in the rest I'm sure PS I've been guilty of the last point and would like to take the chance to appologise to anyone who feels I've disrespected them. I think I'm a bit wiser now. |

Here's the thing: an entertainer who is paid for his work SHOULD be a professional in the same way a doctor or a lawyer is a professional.
Someone somewhere is rolling their eyes at this. (See? I TOLD you I'm a mindreader. ) Why the very NOTION that professional entertainers should be...well...professional, conducting themselves in a professional ethical manner is laughable to many, right? Right? As it sits, there ARE wonderful PROFESSIONAL organizations like PEA, that performers can aim at. But PEA (or any other organization for that manner) can't stop some lowlife piker from laying down fifty bucks at Bobs Magic, Fake Vomit and Ha Ha Dog Poop Store, going out and calling himself a mentalist. There's no power that's going to stop him. Vast portions of the marketplace don't know the difference between a professional performer and a pretend performer -- other than the latter is probably (well...hopefully) MUCH cheaper. A code of conduct? I would embrace it with my whole being. But it's not practical. Here's my code: 1) Ideas (meaning props, books and routines) are my stock in trade. These things allow me to stay fresh as a performer. This means that I have a responsibility to those who generate these things to support them. It's my job to make informed decisions when I make a purchase. It means respecting the orginator and realizing that he makes (and deserves to make), at least a portion of his living, from the product he is sharing. This also means helping to protect the originators when someone (can we use the RIGHT word here?) STEALS their work and calls it their own. In short: Respect the Originators. 2) Secrets (See above) are also my stock in trade. They have VALUE. Respecting them is as much a part of my job as remembering to take my props to a show. Only a fool devalues secrets by spewing them indiscriminately all over the place. People who do this are beneath contempt. There are, for example, some people to whom I will not sell our Magic Pendulum books. I know of several others who do this as well. In short: Respect the Secrets. 3) We are a very small -- but vibrant community in mentalism. There are people who are discovering this for the first time. Many are just in for the short term and will find it doesn't suit them -- or they find out it's more work than they expected. But a few are really here to learn. They come with respect and ask real questions. I was one of them once...and I remember how wonderful it was to have people simply helping me along the way. They had a profound effect on me. I'm still grateful. Who knows if the next Cassidy or Osterlind or Brown is passing through? So as far as the new voices we here goes: I subscribe to the philosophy expounded by Patrick Swayze in the oh-so-deep classic movie "Roadhouse" wherein the Late Great One said "Be nice...until it's time NOT to be nice." In short: Respect the newcomers. 4) As we are a community...each with a different level of interest, experience and skillsets -- we need to look out for each other. We're never going to agree on some of the contentions issues...but we COULD agree to disagree, couldn't we? I hated watching what happened to the magic community over the years I was a part of it. Inch by inch everything was eroded. As I said before: we are a small community made up of pros, semi pros and passionate non-pros. The thing that links us, that draws us together is mentalism. It would be splendid if we could just agree to be a community. This doesn't preclude debate -- even fights. But these, ideally, would take place within a COMMUNITY. In short: Respect the community. 5) And check your fly. Here endth the lethon. David

Great post David, over the head of many I'm afraid thought.
The question posed is What is the Mentalists Code? The answer is do not play in the same pool as magicians, especially kiddie magicians. |
