And so begins the end of mystery & what should be well guarded secrets - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Magic
You'll note if you read Wiki's regulations that they're not bothered about exposure as long as that exposure originates from a free source. They don't care as long as there's no come back on them. Exposure is spreading like wildfire people. All these idiots that say it's ok & doesn't hurt magic can't seem to see beyond their nose. Very sad. |

This extract from the guidelines is interesting:
"Generally 'methods' (i.e. choreography of covert movements, not to be confused with industrial and scientific methods) cannot be protected by copyright but any particular description or presentation of them can be." A possible interpretation of this is that Wikipedia would allow the description of standard sleights but NOT of props, gimmicks, or proprietary magical procedures (such as the Aronson stack) which, it could be argued are industrial or scientific methods, and also NOT of specific routines. Taking this interpretation, an editor could, I think, justifiably remove any such exposures of props, gimmicks, procedures and routines. Also any "particular description or presentation" of a sleight could potentially be removed (e.g., authors' specific handlings). I suggest that the best (though not perfect) solution is for responsible members of the magical community who feel strongly about limiting exposure, to get involved with this project as editors and simply remove all offending material. I find this part of the Wikipedia:Revision_deletion page interesting.
"Even if the material is ultimately found not to be suppressible, administrators are allowed to err on the side of caution, even in cases with an apparent conflict of interest, provided it is in good faith and they quickly seek oversighter review. If the oversighter decides suppression was not appropriate, the material will be restored or admin-deleted instead." So does this mean that as long as nobody challenges the removal of damaging information then we are allowed to? Alisdair |
