Bazinga,
I do think your ORIGINAL question needed a reply as I'm not sure how what you said turned into a discussion of licensing. "Why would someone put their name on something they did not create." Right or wrong here are my thoughts. I believe the perception is, of the buyer, that they are taking a little piece of "you" home at a show, it's something that you created, or had a part in creating. It adds to the perceived value. Whether you are using Eddie Wades' "Magic Wand Magic Kit", Dean's "Abra-Kid-Abra", one of many other products, or this product in particular, putting your name on it increases the value (or so we are told) to your customer. (I personally believe it does if you indicate you had some input into it's creation/compilation.) In days gone by many of the name performers had ghost writers putting together "their" books, Walter Gibson was just one of many that did this type of work for the greats. In the case of this product you are buying the rights (license) to do with it as you please, you can reprint it as is with your name as author, or in another form as suggested by one of the above posters (ie. "compiled by"). You can incorporate the effects into a program for a show as a bonus, use it for a magic class etc., there are many uses for it. Why do we (many) take this route? It is far cheaper for us to buy a "mass" (???) produced licensed product than to spend hundreds, or thousands, of dollars to have one done up of our own. A more nationally known performer would probably have his own product created, his sales would justify the cost of doing this, and he would want his product to be unique. The instant author kit that is being discussed here would cost significant time, and money, to create. It is an excellent value, and is being really backed up by it's creator. Blair P.S. I do think your question was valid to ask here, in it's simplest form, but if you want to discuss further you many want to start another thread. Remember there are a lot of licensed products out there that you can brand with your own name, magic kits, DVD's, tricks etc.

Blair,
Thank you for your considered and reasonable answer. I'm sorry for coming on so strong and I appreciate you finding the validity in my question. I admit too that my perspective may come from buying such a book from two different magicians when I was a kid. It was the same book and each guy claimed to be the author. What you said about the customer feeling it to be a personal part of, or at least some kind of affirmation of a relationship between the customer and, the performer. I remember feeling betrayed and ripped off. I still feel that those things give the profession a bad reputation, but I also take your point. Thank you. Bazinga! |

Isn't the advent of instant author books / licences for magicians a fairly recent thing (like in the past 10-15 years)? You must have been a kid not too long ago, if you bought 2 identical books from 2 different magicians as a kid.
Some performers can get into trouble with librarians, too, if they claim to be the author of an instant author book that they give them for their shelves, as was mentioned on this thread. Still I like some instant author products and adapting them for my use. - Donald

I too think Blair said it well.
I personally see no problem with the idea. Think about it, speakers have writers and comedians have writers. All the late night TV comedians have more than one, they have writing teams. Many of the great book writers have helpers that actually write stuff for them. They get paid to do that and have no problem with being credited for the work. I sometimes have a little boy cut my grass, I have no problem with the neighbors thinking I cut it. LOL Tom PS. Donald I had forgotten about that thread. I still feel the same way. Why write a bad book when you can pay somebody to help you with it.

Now, I wouldn't lie to them about the grass if they asked, but I don't feel obligated to put a sign out there either. Tom

This is the first Instant Author Kit that I have found to be of interest to me! Matthew and I have toyed with the idea of purchasing one for quite a while now, but never really found any that fit us. I love the fact that you can actually create a kit by putting the supplies in it. I really think this increases the value to the customer in huge way. Many times parents are so busy working and trying to make ends meet that they just don't have time to get the kids the supplies to actually learn the tricks.
We teach magic classes, and one of the things our customers like the best about it is the fact that we provide all the materials, so they do not have to. This really looks fantastic! ~Nanci |

Okay everybody...let's not hijack Presto's thread here.
I have been screwed over on several occasions now with "instant author" stuff. Most of it has been absolutely CRAP quality. In looking over Presto's site, however, I have this one to be a refreshing change. I do believe I shall buy it today. I have dealt with Presto in the past, and he has been exceedingly easy to work with. Okay...back to the Al/Mark pay-per-view.
