In the scandinavian countries, at least Sweden, this series with James Arness became tremendously popular when it was on tv in the 70's. I've heard, that it never became that popular in the US. Do any of you remember it, and what did you think of it?

Any theory of why it never became popular in the country where it was made? Now 20 years later, when it was reaired I notice a slight documentary theme in it. Was this the reason, more noticeable to americans than us?

Old West TV shows were big here in the 50's and 60's. Kids wore coonskin caps, played "Cowboys and Indians" and rode those broomstick horses.

I would never have suspected on my own that Western TV shows were as popular as they are/were in Europe, simply because there never was such a period in European history. After taking a French language class, I learned that they were popular BECAUSE of that very reason...it was that same fascination Americans had with that old-fashioned romantic lifestyle.

As for How the West Was Won, I have no idea. I never saw it, as I am only 26.

Actually, HTWWW was not entirely unpopular. It spawned a TV movie, a mini-series, and a full-on series that ran for just over a year (11 2-hour eps.) That's not too bad considering that -- even in those days -- TV series often didn't finish out a single season.

Even so, I think its relatively short lifespan was largely due to the decline in popularity of the western genre in the '70s.

It is still highly regarded by some TV fans but not widely remembered by "the great unwashed." Those folks remember "Dallas" from that period in time.
