...then I highly recommend this talk by Diane Ravitch, historian of education. It runs about an hour; by the end of that time you will be brought up to speed about what is happening to public education and where to go from here. If you have views about charter schools, vouchers, and teacher evaluations, you will learn a lot from this talk. She is a bright, witty, and extremely knowledgeable speaker.

For a written summary of many of the points that Ravitch mentions in her talk, see this blogpost by a Louisiana blogger. It helps connect the dots:

Beyond just running down we're going to caste/class and indoctrinization by state funded daycare centers?

State funded, profits going to private entrepreneurs, with little to no accountability.

Back in the early 60s Milton Friedman made the interesting and important observation that the state's obligation to pay for children's education did not imply the state's obligation to provide it. Even Friedman insisted on standards:
Quote:
The role of the government would be limited to assuring that the schools met certain minimum standards such as the inclusion of a minimum common content in their programs, much as it now inspects restaurants to assure that they maintain minimum sanitary standards. Of course, the real debate is over what the standards should be.

It would be interesting to see the blog entry side-by-side with one similarly critical of the public school quasi-monopoly model.

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley. "...as we reason and love, we are able to hope. And hope enables us to resist those things that would enslave us." |
