Strange Tasting Fish Sticks 1988 - 2013 The Big Brother is watching you 1095 Posts |
I've been listening to a song by Macklemore called "10,000" hours, saying that it takes 10,000 hours to master his craft in music (or anything) (Same thing Ponta told me, that he practiced over 10,000 hours in his tricks, he told me I would be as good as him in 2 years)
The song really broke me down and made me cry. It reminded me in college, studying japanese, I have an A, I study it 4 hours a day. I aced every Test with An A so far. I feel the only reason really I want to master japanese is to work for French Job and live in japan. I talked to Norifumi Mitani (the translator for french drop ) he said it was a "wonderful dream." But I feel likes it a long shot. They are working on another project and want my help. It will be released next month here in the USA. it has amazing coin magic as well as card magic. I'll keep you updated. I feel college is sucking all my time in magic. I cried because I felt college wasn't my true calling. I desperately want to win FISM, I desperately want to become good enough to perform at the magic Castle. I don't want to be your "average" coin magician, I want to be great at coin magic, like Ponta. I want to develop my own style. I'd drop out and just practice magic 7 hours a day again everyday if it wasn't for the Japanese. I talked to the Vice president of the Society of American magician, who shook my hand, and said "Congratulations. Max krause told me you are phenomenal with coin magic. We're going to have you do a lecture, if you want, in June or July. It will give you a while to prepare." Now its only 1 or 2 months away. I've hardly have had time to practice. Jerry Ferguson (who organizes the SAM and lectuers) keeps freaking me out telling me weird ways to kill myself. I know hes joking, but it bothers me, and I really don't' want to work on the DVD with him. Max Krause hasn't been in contact, he's been too busy, and I'm running out of time after he moved to New Mexico. I'm not sure what to do. I haven't had time to practice much. I have many ideas. I wanted to create this thread to get some feedback on an effect. It still needs to be smoothed. I posted a video earlier before about MP'ing 2 coins instantelouys into the fist (like a le masque load almost as the hand turns, I learned it from Akira Fuji at IMX) while MP'ing another one at the same time almost at the same instant on the top of the hand. I had an idea: If I did this with a chinese and silver coin, I could put the chinese coin coin in HEEL CLIP, and TP it off and "extract" it from the silver coin from the top of the fist. I decided to hold 3 coins in MP. I am practicing instantly muscle passing 2 coins one at a time into the fist, without them clinking, and one on top. I created a patter on how our money isn't work much now days. I show the dollar on top of the fist, and say "It's only a dollar, it isn't worth much, but if I tap it...I can extract another silver coin from it and create 2 dollars." "But still, it's only 2 dollars. That can't buy much now days..." ... "What's interesting though is chinese currency. It's worth even less, but equal to 2 of these silver coins, in fact, if I tap my fist..."" ""I can extract the chinese coin from the 2 silver coins on top of my fist." All 3 coins are produced from the fist via TP from the first 2 being secretly muscle passed one at a time into the left as the hand turns around in an instant. I think its a great idea. and I finally found a use for it. The idea came to me on the bus. Its weird how creative ideas come when you least expect it. Well, that's it for now. I need some feedback guys, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. PS: the video only did it with 2 american coins. I now do it with a chinese coin and american, the chinese goes in the fact and is extracted from the top of the silver coin on the fist. I think its a better idea, except I do it 2 times in a row. Please check out the video in the YOU OUGHT TO BE IN PICTURES thread, thanks: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......um=217&1 (Thanks to Curtis Kam for this idea) PSS: I'm also talking to Ponta again today! I'm so happy about this. It was hard to get ahold of him, but I managed to. Cperkins quote keeps me going when I'm feeling very depressed or have suicidal thoughts, thank you my man, I read it often: "I must say, you take on the most difficult SOH with coins and persist until you attain the skill. This is remarkable really, and a kind of inspiration to those who want to put in the work. So, if you keep at it like this, I can't imagine your skill level in say, another year or two. This is a passion of yours obviously. You are a lucky guy Fish. Many people don't have a passion in their life. You do. Keep building on these skills and taking risks with it. chuck" |

Great job as usual Kevin, you have great coin skills and hopefully one day you will realize it to where you will quit doubting yourself. Your name is Kevin, not Ponta, take your skills in your direction because it is your path. Remember my favorite saying " anyone can do magic, only a select few can perform magic " you have great technical skills ( far better than many ) now work on the other very important skills needed to be a great performer.
No 1... Confidence - you should be beaming with it. If you look nervous the audience might concentrate more on you than the magic No 2... Audience management - when you are confident you lead the conversation, the show, the effect. You have to know how to handle a heckler without losing your cool and losing focus of what you are doing. No 3... Eye contact - when you make eye contact and touch someone's hand just in the act of handing them a coin and closing their hand around it, you have broken several barriers that others in the room would not have a chance to. When you touch someone while making eye contact, you have just formed a bond with them and hey, it's great misdirection, if they are looking in your eyes they are not seeing the switch you may be doing in their hand. No 4... Excite them. You will get nowhere fast if you bore your audience. Just as your confidence is important as to how they perceive you, your level of excitement helps them to be excited. Make routines get better and better. Wow them! These are only a few fundamentals but they are important and a good start. I am sure once you build some confidence, you will go way further than you ever dreamed. It will be you on the next great coin DVD and I will be sitting here posting " I remember him when he was struggling - good for him, I am gonna buy this" Hopefully all is going well with your living situation and health, both physical and mental. I am sure you will do well at the lecture.( I wish I could be there for ya, but I will in spirit my friend) Keep up the new moves, concentrate on Kevin rather than Ponta, Max, Jerry. It's great to know some "big name magicians" but they are very busy being big name magicians and don't always have time for full time mentoring. Hit the books watch your DVDs practice practice practice and one day you will be a big name magician, but YOU are the only one who can get you there. You have obstacles to overcome and I share many of them with you as you know and I understand how hard it can be. Just remember whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Good luck and the you tube video is great.

From the perspective of someone else who is also going to school and would really like to not do so sometimes, let me offer a few words.
One of the most amazing magicians I've met was a doctor who ran the local IBM ring where I grew up. He put in the years and effort of becoming a physician, and though he wasn't wealthy, he sure had the means to spend time and effort on his magic. He remodeled the basement of his home to put a STAGE in there! It had lighting and trap door and everything! He even shut the whole thing up behind a bookshelf that swung open when you pulled the right book, so you had to go through a "secret entrance" to get to the indoor stage dedicated to magic. The entire room was full of signed autographs of visiting magicians who had been there lecturing throughout the years and antique furniture which gave it a definite Vaudeville parlor look. There was a side office down the hall full of bookshelves of magic books and DVDs that he made a public "library" for members of the group to check out and learn for free. He even had stage illusions and props stuffed away in a closet that he'd let people use if they wanted. The resources available to me when I was just a kid because of his generosity allowed me to learn much more about magic than any other random high school kid could have learned without wealthy, spoiling parents. For the kid of a public school teacher in a family that was occasionally on welfare, that meant a lot to me. My point in bringing this up was that he was able to do those things, and be much more involved in magic than most aficionados of the art, because he had the financial status to do so. He wasn't the CEO of a huge company, but he did well enough for himself that he could splurge on his hobby where others would buy motorcycles and stuff in their midlife crises. Having a goal in mind of becoming a professional magician is great. Its a worthy goal. I feel that the tone of your post, however, seems like you are focusing on that goal so much that it is blinding you to other possibilities. Forgive the analogy, but it sounds to me like a kid who plays basketball at the park every night and whose dream is to grow up and play in the NBA. Its a worthy goal, and pursuing it will bring the kid much in terms of self discipline and training, but at the end of the day it is such a hard, statistically unlikely goal that I would hope the kid had some other prospects. There is a reason the phrase "don't quit yer day job" has such a ring to it. Being a professional magician is like that, in my opinion. Perhaps others here can correct me if they do it professionally, but I would imagine it is very hard. No guaranteed income. No surefire way to create a product and have it supply your income forever. Teaching videos and books may sell well, but the magic brotherhood is such a closed society that even if you created a blockbuster hit DVD or effect or something, how long can you rely on that to support you? Only a few select people end up getting the break that makes for fame like Copperfield or Penn and Teller. In order to be successful at creating effects or whatnot requires lots of hard work and a more than a little luck. Furthermore, how does your goal of professional magician actually pan out? Is this something you can achieve in a year? Two years? A decade? If it will take years, how will you support yourself (both financially and emotionally) during the times before you get there? How does it fit in with other goals you may have in life, like having a family? Are your reasons for pursuing this to prove something to others or to yourself? Is that a good enough reason? Do you want to make it big in the magic world, or would you be happy with just enough to get by doing kid parties and bar mitzvahs if it allowed you to stay in the field? The answers to those questions will determine how you need to proceed. I don't mean to sound discouraging, but sometimes it is so easy to be focused on a single goal that you get blindsided when life hits you from the other direction. It sounds to me like you've got lots of potential to market yourself in other ways that may provide you with more stability. Doing magic requires discipline and attention to detail, both valuable skills. Your grades sound like you're proving yourself at school, and being bilingual in an Asian tongue is not very common in the job market. Realizing the small chance of making it big in the magic world, and the harder life that may be present if you don't, what is your plan B? And lastly, if you have a plan B, is it something you should do first and then use your stability from that to pursue your magic dreams? For me, the answer was simple. I loved magic, yet I also had the ability to do well in other fields. So I decided to pursue a degree in medicine like my old exemplar, and I know that I'll be in a position to build my own indoor stage one day. Sure, sometimes I regret the hard work or that I don't have time to dig myself into my hobbies or practice my moves as much as I'd like. But I've not regretted it. Don't let yourself get discouraged. Make a realistic goal for yourself (realistic in this case means accounting for the contingencies of what to do if your goal isn't met in a timely manner) and you'll find yourself much better able to pursue it. If your goal is to move to Japan and help establish the English language marketing branch of the French Drop Magic Shop and have coffee with Ponta every day, go for it. But keep in mind how long the road is so that you don't let yourself get discouraged each time a speedbump on the road pops up. |

College was the beginning of my magic.
It also was when I started getting involved with theatre groups. Journals, along with practice and play can be great for our creativity. As far as winning, the path is much more worthy than the destination. Thanks for sharing with us. You are appreciated once again by, Harris now and zen I get it "write" laughologist and nearly normal reader and "righter"

Well, I don't think you should get offended by and absolutely objetive and emotionless post, it might sound discouraging, but those are the most difficult to make, in fact, I would thank anyone who had the balls to tell me exactly what they think instead of just tapping me in the back and say "Yeah, you go man".
Bob is a cool guy, I bet he made that post with the sole intention of giving you another perspective. It might not be as encouraging, but it sure was necessary.
I hope you understand, my dear friend, that everything you are seeing is a lie, but everything you are feeling holds true.

It is possible that you find more jobs in the USA than in Japan. Still, it will take a couple of generations before the average citizen speaks English, so there is short term hope For JET (and Interac, or all the other similar systems), nothing guarantees that you'll be in Tokyo/Osaka. You could be sent in the middle of Tottori-ken, or in the countryside of Fukushima. In fact, you're more likely to! You'll have housing, for sure. But beware! unless you've tried it yourself, it's hard to believe how bad housing in Japan often is ^^. Moreover, I think that JET, even though renewable, is limited in time. After three or four years, you'll have to find your own Eikaiwa instead of highschool, and you won't have housing anymore, or you have to go home. THose who stay after JET are often those who stay for the (local) wife.... The big advantage, though, is that Japanese people *love* magic! If you can speak well enough, you could find a job in a magic bar, if there's one where you live (although it's most likely to be forbidden by your visa, because of the regulations concerning work of foreigners in dim lit places). Bob, I have no doubt it will be a hard path. Nothing was accomplished that was easy. I'm taking your critism to heart, I just don't like being put off and discouraged saying my dreams are "unrealistic" by all the people that "didn't make it." That certainly doesn't mean I will, I truly believe I will. I understand most don't get the chance, but I believe I can do ANYTHING I SET MY MIND TO. There's a saying, ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE IF YOU WANT IT BAD ENOUGH. Due to my practice and friendship with Ponta, I had the opportunity (and still am) working for my frenchdrop. That was my dream. No other american person (to my knowledge) had that opportunity. Eventually, I have an idea to translate for their company the DVDs into English. Why are you so discouraging? Really, it's people like you who are negative that I should avoid. Again, I appreciate the constructive advice, most people won't "make it" but that's not me. Dean Dill, who does other occpuations, made it as a big name despite his other occoputation. Even if I'm not a full time pro with magic like Ponta, I still believe I can be a big name like Ponta or Dean Dill, there's nothing holding me back from that! I just wish more people would see I don't give up on things, ever, and discourage or underestimate me. I've lost 108 lbs through weight lifting 5 days a week, 2 hours a day, and cycling in the summer in 117 degrees 8 miles a day. I don't give up. Most people give up. In fact, that's why most people fail. They give up too easily. I'm not one to do that. And you know what? I thought this magic lecture was a big deal. I thought it'd give me a break. I thought my trick with the muscle pass (which I think is a fantastic and orginnal idea) , but apprantly it isn't, anyone can lecture at SAM, and I'm just your average crappy coin magician, according to the lecture. Heck, even my former friend/ex bank robber friend is getting a chance to lecture there. His magic isn't that great at all. That made me realize this is no big deal, like I once thought. I am deeply depressed by that. Your comment is/and was very discouraging, and your future comments just make me more angry. I wish people wouldn't say its "Unrealistic". But that's life. People told the wright brothers dream was "unrealistic." People called Walt Disney "with no imagination". Stephen kings first book was rejected over 100+ times, and he threw the copy in the trash, giving up, before his wife fished it out and told him to keep doing it. If people didn't believe in their dreams and instead have other people discourage them, like you are doing to me, there would be no progress in this world. In fact, every great progress and technology in this world was made by people who thought the impossible was possible. When I posted my muscle pass idea, a couple people didn't think it was possible until I showed a video that it was possible. I'm not saying you have to say its all "rainbows" and such, but the rare individual who truly believes in you, and says "I believe you will do it.." or can "Do it..." is much more encouraging and helpful than someone who critizes or doubts someone, and that's a fact, whether it's "rainbows " or not. One day, maybe you'll think different Bob. It just makes me so angry. And you're not the only one. Several other people have said I'm not accepting "construtive critism", this isn't constructive, its hurtful and doubting. You are like everyone else who has doubted people, who happened to, thank god, not listen to those people and keep persisting. I'm very upset by the lack of agreement on this on this forum. "realistic" or not, I'm tired of hearing that crap. It's just a term used to doubt people and hold them back. It's certainly not "magicians helping magicians" sometimes here, and this proves it. I certainly appreciate your PM, it was helpful. But after reading your post here, it completely contradicts what you said in the PM and is worse than your first post, and even more negative and discouraging . It is not constructive critism. It is one saying my dreams are "Unrealistic", which is not true. I guarantee you 99.99% people will say that. I don't care. I believe in myself. I really want nothing to do with you now. I don't want your "advice.". I don't want you to come to my lecture. I don't another comment from you. I liked you Bob, you were a great guy, but I've lost all respect for you. If other people lost respect for me too from this, I doubt care. If there's one thing that upsets me, its people discouraging me from my dreams. I want to do magic more than anything. I don't want to perform at restaurants that much. Anyone can do that. I want to be a pro, even if its a side job , like Ponta. Isn't it a good thing to aspire to be better? Well, certainly it doesn't seem you think so. I'm done with this. God, I already am really really upset by this. I might as well quit. I've lost all interest in magic anyway. I'm probably not going to hold that lecture do to lack of support from the DVD. What's the point ? Anyone can do that, its no big deal. What do I have to publish in this world or contribute in magic? Nothing. I guess you're post proves that, I don't know, it just makes me doubt myself. I want to believe in myself, but I don't know anymore . :sigh: |

I have read and re-read Bobs original post and from an objective standpoint - there is nothing discouraging about it. It is realistic sound advice. "Magicians helping Magicians" mean we help each other. Help is not always pats on the back, it is often constructive criticism that we may not want to hear but need to. Some people on this forum do betray the "Magicians helping Magicians" theme of this forum, they are just a- holes and nothing to add with any of their posts. They are also obvious and usually just better ignored as they love to argue. Bobthemagicdoerguy is NOT one of those people. His post was very constructive and realistic - things you need to plan on the possibility of happening. Yes, the Wright Brothers flew but a lot of "Intelligent and worthy inventors" flew off a cliff and dropped to their death. We all need a plan B in our lives no matter what we do. I make no bones about it - magic is my plan B. I made my money and supported my family driving truck over the road for 17 years. Magic was a hobby to me and for a couple years that I was laid off I made enough "doing kiddy parties and bar mitzvah s " along with restaurants, bars and festivals to make enough to add to my wife's income and we were able to skate by. Problem is, now I need a plan C... Since cancer took away any chances I would ever have to go back to driving truck. I live in a small town area in the Ohio/WV area and there is not a lot of call for a magician - I had to convince people it would work when I did it before so I know I can't "make my living" at it here. That is my reality and it sucks but I have accepted it and I use it as a plan B income source. Social Security is not enough for all our bills so my wife must remain in the workplace as our main income. She has to take care of me, that is my reality. Now to a couple points (constructively and realistically ) At one point you guarantee 99.99% would agree but you are freaking out on 1 that said it in a constructive way? At another point you appreciate his PM and say it was helpful yet a complete contradiction to his post ( which I think everyone but you would have thought to be helpful ) and you practically yell at him "don't talk to me anymore" I certainly appreciate your PM, it was helpful. That sounds kind of immature, wouldn't you think? Is Bob that bad of a person he is not allowed to attend your lecture that you yourself seem to think means nothing anyway now? Please Kevin, be the better person and take what you find good about his post to heart and ignore the parts you think are so bad. (Because they are really not bad and even if they were, I am sure that was not his intention.) I am done with this God, I already am really really upset by this. :sigh: Where does this come from??? In the beginning of you post, you can do anything. So why doubt you? It seems you have accomplished many things in your past and I am sure you will accomplish many more in the future but as someone said in an earlier post - don't let this dream blind you. Quit doubting yourself, you know you have mad skills when it comes to coins but be ready if that isn't enough. Anything can happen just an obscure but realistic example, say the economy tanks ( like it seems to be doing ) no one is gonna spend money to be entertained. There is bread and milk to buy and gas and electric and rent to pay. Nothing will be left for movies, cable TV, comedy clubs, magic shows... It could happen ( more than likely it won't ) so just be prepared. I am not attacking you or trying to put you down or even be discouraging, I am just trying to point out that "Magicians Helping Magicians" is really what is going on here and people - especially Bob, are just trying to help you with some realistic sound advice that you can take or leave. But, if you continue to take things as attacks and push away people like Bob, you will be left with no one. I honestly believe people who like you aren't replying because you might not take it for what it is and get on your bad side. Me, I don't care if you like me or not, I like you, I am envious of your coin skills, I understand a lot of what you are going through and I am going to continue to tell you exactly what I think because I genuinely want to help.

Yeah, the parts I quoted didn't show up as quotes and I didn't know how to fix that part. So it looks more jumbled than it should have been.

This should make you feel better. Making your living through magic is far more attainable than being in the NBA.
"Forgive the analogy, but it sounds to me like a kid who plays basketball at the park every night and whose dream is to grow up and play in the NBA. " "The number of players in the NBA varies each year. Each team can carry a maximum of 15 players. But, they can carry as few as 12. So, each year the number of players range anywhere from 360 to 450 since there are 30 teams in the league." Not many NBA players. I imagine there are more pro magicians wordwide. While the pay isn't as good as the NBA, its not a bad as some would make it out to be. http://www.salaryexpert.com/Magician/salary-survey-2100.htm |

Festivals bars kids parties busking.. 5) are your needs met as far as having health insurance, some type of savings/retirement plan short or long term Dissability? 6) is your job solely performing or do you also work in a magic shop, are you a creator of props or effects, are you working steady performing on DVD that is carried by mainstream magic shops ( not a 1 and done ) but steady. It would be interesting to find some statistics on this. I mean the definition of a Professional Magician in its simplest form is someone who is paid to perform magic. 1 kids birthday party technically fits that. But I wonder how many fit the now and again Professional like myself. And how many are out there every night knocking down some bucks like David Copperfield and the like

Kevin, your very hard to take seriously sometimes man. You contradict yourself over and over. One minute you say I NEVER QUIT, I NEVER GIVE UP and the next minute you say your a crappy magician and I MIGHT AS WELL JUST QUIT. Seriously man if you believe you can do anything just do it. No need get all upset about it brother.
