I know this is not the "for sale" forum, but I hoped I would be able to target the coin workers better by posting this here. I want an original Bobby Bernard box... not the poor ripoff "Beyond Okito" (apologies to George, I know you were only making them according to specs you were given by Definitive Magic)... but at least something close to the original I can get (or an original itself).
Anyone. |

Ok... I got some information from a very helpful Café member... so I'm not looking for a original Bobby Bernard box... or any of the current knock-offs.

Congratulations if you've acquired an original.
At one time, Pat Page used to get them made up for Bobby, but they were only sold privately. Some of the rip-offs that I've seen over the years are a disgrace to magical manufacturing. In some cases, the base has actually fallen out of the rim!

But at the same time, you indicate that the originals were much better made than the current crop of crappy BB boxes. My memory says the original was much better made. Now I'm doubly confused. If anyone owns an original Bobby Bernard Box... even if you are not interested in parting with one, please PM me because I would like to get a definitive answer to the quality of the originals versus ??? |

Al, I think I'm the one who PMed you about the Beyond Okito Box. The Beyond does have the charactistics as The Bernard box but I have no idea how well made the Bernard box is compared to the Beyond box. I can say I think the walls of the Beyond box are too thin for my taste, but it does work. Dan Watkins has a nice box routine using the Beyond box. Here's a clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkWsG9SjXrU What routine/s are you looking to use this box for ?
Hope this helps, Joe

I only saw an original version of the Bob Bernard Box a few times back in the late 1970's. To the best of my memory (which is pretty good as I loved the idea but, being a schoolboy, simply couldn't afford one) the wall of the box was much thicker, and it was weightier than current versions; making the actual turnover move simpler. Okay, with this box, you don't need to do an Okito turnover per se; but it still makes the handling easier if you have some more weight in the prop.
The modern versions that I have seen simply remind me of a cheap, thin brass ring and a disc. They don't even give the feel of a 'coin box'. One that I played around with, as mentioned above, actually had the disc/false bottom fall out! This appeared to be because the 'ring' was not sufficiently lipped. You could also see daylight between the side of the disc and the wall of the box. It even came with a genuine box for switching in - I wonder why? So in other words, the production quality of the modern day version, by comparison to the original, was utter garbage. No surprise really - given that the 'Beyond Okito Box' (or BOB for short) is now being produced without BOBby Bernard ever giving his permission to market it.

I have a very old box like this, but it is "lipped" on just one end. This is for a clean-up of some kind as part of a longer routine.. The instructions (which do not list manufacturer) include a handling with just the bottomless ring. There's a matching ungimmicked box, too.
Anyone have any knowledge of this set...? Is this the BB Box? Julie |

I am not sure what routine you are planning, but if you can't find a quality made Bobby Bernard Box perhaps you might consider the Duvivier Coin box:

After your description... and a few PM's from other Café users, I'm now convinced that my memory is not faulty... the only thing faulty is the "floating bottom" boxes that are being made today.
So... my offer still stands... anyone have an original BB box that they want to part with? |
