In my 22 minute act I use six doves but the audience only sees two at a time.
In the two hour show, we (Lucy and I) use about a dozen. Somethings stay secret. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

The most I can recall ever having ever seen produced in the same show was at a state fair where the magician produced three cages containing six colored doves each. However, what he really had was a poodle dog act. They were dyed different colors too. It was very entertaining but not really a magic show. (They will never guess what a magician really wants to see.)
Frankly, he did nothing with them but produce the cages from large feathers. Three times was enough! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

In 1980 I was at the magic castle and witnessed a young magician who producted at least 25 or more doves and chicken.
It was a very memberable act. He formed a huge paper cone and lots of birds poured out of the top of the coin like a fountain. The were all colored and it grew from within the cone. They did not fly out but swolled up climing all over each other. Bill |

That would be Dirk Arthur Bill is referring to. I am trying to find information on this production. I would like to add it to my act. Any clue where I could find more information on it? I just need to know about the loads.

The most birds I have ever used in an act to date is 5. But I'm hoping to expand it to 7.

The most I ever worked out was 9 wearing a dinner tux jacket.
Anyone know what ever happened to Dirk Arthur? The only other trick in his act was splitting of 36" peach colored silks several times. I never seen anything written up in Genii back then in 1980 about him. But his act was memorable, as I clearly still recall it today. |

Bill, I'm pretty sure Dirk Arthur has a live show at the Plaza hotel in Las Vegas.

I remember that act too, didn't he produce like an ostrich or something huge like that as his finish? Or a flamingo? I remember it was something way out there like that. I don't think he's doing the act anymore, too caught up with the tigers, and I can relate with that. We just did a show this last weekend with a tiger and the tiger urinated in the load and all down into the steps and everything about 20 min before it was time for the illusion. So there wasn't a whole lot of time to clean it up. The trainers did a good job trying to, but you could smell it and man it was gagging. ...and I thought birds could be a handful!

Sperris,
They shouldn't have let him drink before he went to bed. The act I saw which may be Dirk Arthur was at the Magic Castle. If I remember correctly hid finally after the pouring of doves was a chicken. The chicken also came as the last bird from the cone. He looked like he was only maybe 19 years old at the time. The whole act was the same color as far as suit and silks, sort of a Mauve or Pink. He had an assisant who stayed down stage and just helped with the pouring of birds. I do not remember a flamingo, but it was in 1980 or 1981. Wow! To do the cornacopia with all those birds, and I did not see the steal. Just formed a very large piece of stiff paper into a cone and the cone swelled to the top with birds while he held the cone. It was truly a visual experience. The closest comparison is when you see your toliet or a soda pop overflows and can't stop it before it flows onto the floor. His act made my visit worth while. |

Dan, You're right. Dirk's act in Vegas is not the same as being talked about here. He does use the tigers etc now. I was just answering Bill's question about what happened to him.

It make me happy that such a talented person made it to the big time in MAGIC!

At one timed we produced 14 1/2 doves from Gwynne's Box, Tray and Screen and then vanished them in an Abbott's Where Do They Go. (the 1/2 was a rubber chicken from an earlier effect--It got a second laugh!).

I know this topic is like 3 years old but... I use 9 birds in my act. 7 are doves, and I use a king pigeon and my umbrella cockatoo (on occasion). The most doves I have ever seen used would have to be Greg Frewin he produced 10 doves in his 5 minute act on the Worlds Greatest Magic. I have never seen Dirk Arthurs dove act but I know he produced a lot of birds. I also heard Dirk closed his act with the production of a 9 foot ostrich. But the most doves I have ever heard about used in a dove act would have to be 50.I forget the mans name but I heard he produced 50 doves in his 14 minute act. 25 of which were body loads(NO JOKE}. at the end of the act he would vanish them and the other 25 doves flew to him from the back of the theatre.
P.S Dirk still does the cone production that wmhegbli speaks of in his show at the Flamingo in Vegas. It is a very memorable production. He produces 6 pigeons and then a duck. Its a very cool sight to see. |

I can't imagine anyone being able to body load 25 doves. Amos Levkovitch does this routine with 6 doves, vanishing them in a dove carosel.
