Hi all,
Thanks to Sparticus I remembered that I forgot to introduce myself...... My name is Graham, am Scottish by birth but now live in wonderful Tenerife, which basically is a volcano in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean - Hence the reason I decided to become a magician.... If it blows I can make mself dissappear ;-). Seriously though... I was "right into magic" during my childhood and teens, but then for various reasons I stopped learning tricks etc. I still LOVED watching magic but just not practicing, performing or learning magic. Now in my 40's, a few years ago I got the bug again, and had the time, and got back into magic. After a while of learning tricks etc I have just started performing to friends, family, acquanitices and clients in our bar and restaurant. I have been "lurking" in the Café for a couple of years and just recently decided to actually get involved in the Café. My main interests (performing wise) is closeup magic performed in Table hopping and small cabaret setting, oh and mentalism. I do love magic in general though from Elastic band magic up to massive illusions. I hope to be an active participant and learn from you guys. Cheers for now..... Graham |

Welcome Sparkybear,
I guess sparks are better than a full eruption. It must be great to have a venue of your own (as long as you're not chasing customers away). LOL I'll see you in the Close-Up fora. -Mary Mowder |

Here's a funny observation, and bar owners and the like can maybe learn from what I discovered by accident....... Usually a bar or restaurant (or certainly it is how it works here, usually) will hire a magician for a set night or nights. So folk who maybe like magic will go especially on those nights. I havent yet started doing set nights. What happens is I am in and out of the bar most nights and will just start doing some magic off the cuff if I am not too busy, feel up for it AND the "audience" feels right for me (AM still wary of the hecklers and idiots as I don't have the confidence to handle them yet). It has actually helped me perform cause there is no pressure on me to perform and can do it very relaxed. My magical mentor also shows up now and again, but never by design, and does impromptu stuff too. What I have found, completely by accident, that a few people come to the bar now in the hope that maybe, "just maybe", "one of the magicians might be in". So we get extra customers WITHOUT having a set night. Okay they are all probably hoping its the "other magician" rather than me, but hey ho, thems the breaks lol !!!! You will no doubt find me lurking in there ;-). I look forward to seeing you there. |

Egad! Another Scot!
--and one that sells scotch as well! What will become of us??? One thing in your favor: you can't be 'sacked' by the owner! The late Matt Schulien had his own tavern in Chicago(that's a pub in the UK! hee hee_) Matt was known for his card tricks (and practical jokes). Phil Willmarth wrote a book about Matt (and his card tricks) I have a feeling that you would find some useful things in that book! It was published by MAGIC INC. (5082 North Lincoln Av...Chicago Illinois (I'll try to get the zip code and PM you.) The late Jean Hugard (an Aussie) was a professional magician. Later,('40s and '50s) he published "HUGARD'S MAGIC MONTHLY".(I don't remember when, but some years ago, he wrote "ROYAL ROAD TO CARD MAGIC'. It's still in print after more years than I care to count. In mentoring young magician 'wannabees' who are interested in csrds, it's the ONE book that I invariably recommend. There are a gazillion books on cards, but RRCM has stood the test of time. I hope we'll see you around the café! Dick Oslund Sneaky, underhanded, devious, and surreptitious itinerant mountebanc (who has been known to sample a bit of single malt on occasion.) PS (I'm whispering this so she wont overhear): There is a woman who frequents the new arrivals 'page'. You must beware! She does d*** good card tricks, and she wont tell us how she does them. She smiles a lot and usually hides behind a card fan. Her initials are MM).

What will become of you??? WHAT WILL BECOME OF YOU???? Very easy.... Ye will get mad mental drunk LOL !!!! Not get sacked... Probably not he is a very nice guy lol !!! Sounds like I WOULD like to get my greasy little, whisky soaked mitts on that book. RRCM is a book sitting proudly on my book shelf. Very good, though sometimes I must admit to preferring DVD. But it is a gem if I canget a quite moment and concentrate on it 100%. Dick If you are ever over here in Sunny Tenerife I will share with you some REALLY good Whisky, the stuff the normal punter doesn't get to taste as they wouldn't appreciate it lol !!! Whispering.... You don't mean.....(very softly) you don't mean Mary do you!!! So your the poor man that is going to get the VC for putting up with hell on earth? Is it true she constantly fires cards at you and is the brains behind her performances....???? sshhhhhh I think I just heard her enter the room, and I aint got my body armour on ;-) Cheers mate |
