Hi fellow magi,
I remember what I believe was in The Magic Magazine Book of Magic, a cut and restored string that was amazing. I remember how to do it. This was not impromptu, but was great. You showed the two ends of a doubled up string in your fingers, cut out the center of the string, and without any switching or ditching, restored the two pieces of string. This required some setup but the performance was easy and very magical. Does anyone remember this or do you suggest any other versions? This may show how dated (or ageless?) I am. I am interested in what other versions have been invented since. Thanks, Scott |

What you describe is a GEM of a trick! (I guess with your background, that's the correct word.) LOL
Sounds like what Charlie Miller used to call the DUNBURY DELUSION. The principle goes back for eons. Every so often, someone "reinvents" it and sells it (for $10) to the new guys who haven't done their homework. A young friend of mine (20 years ago) showed me an ad in one of the magazines for this "new" c/r rope (or string). Ten bucks! He was flabbergasted when I did it for him (after a bit of 'backstage' p*********n). I told my young friend, "I've been around, too long!" It requires a soft TWISTED STRING, and a bit of "adh****e. I do it, occasionally, with appropriate rope. Yes, Chuck Stanfield had a version, that he sold back in the '70s. Jay produced it for Chuck, and Magic Inc. may still sell it. Inc. may still have Charlie's Dunbury Delusion, too. The dealer ad for Jeff Sheridan is somewhat overly 'ecstatic',I think. I've never met Jeff, but I understand from others that he is/was d*** good. I'm inclined to doubt that he is/was the 'father of street magic, etc.", however. We don't discuss details of methods here, as this forum is open to 'non initiates". PM me, if you wish to continue the discussion.

Wow, Dick,
You are an absolute wealth of information--you should be paid staff here--I kid you not. Yes, I do this with string, but did not think you could do it with rope, and yes, we are talking about the same effect (making a loop with adhesive, and forming the *****'s,.... Your description of adhesive and twisted string confirmed it. So magicians probably did this for Pharaoh back in the time of Moses--please confirm, anyone, when you find it on in heiroglyphs in the Egyptian section of the British Museum. As you can see, sometimes magic improves, but sometimes magic forgets and has to rediscover perhaps the best c & r string ever (I would love to see or learn of something equal or better). Once you cut the "center" out, your work is done, and there are NO PARTS TO DITCH. So, yes, my friend, this is a miracle, which is rarely performed. Magically, Scott |

I've been doing this effect for years in my walk around and B-Day Shows,...a great effect,....but I've never seen or heard of it being done with rope. Hmmm It is also shown in the Jaw Dropper collection.(as seen on tv).

I'll be out at my storage facility on Wednesday (I hope). I'll try to dig out a sample of the rope so I can describe it clearly. I have no idea where to buy the stuff. Someone gave me a 'big' ball of it (maybe 20 years ago!) Every so often, I have a club date that 'demands' something special. So, I bring out 'the' rope!
The late Chuck Stanfield put out a trick using this kind or rope (as well as I can remember). I can't remember what the trick was called. I'll try to check through my old Magic Inc. catalogs. This has really turned into a big deal!!!!! WATCH THIS SPACE (FOR FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS)

There is no doubt that Jeff Sheridan was pivotal in bringing street magic to the level it is today - it was his sole venue for performing starting in the 1960s - which was also before Cellini even started busking. I would personally consider both of those men (regardless of one pre-dating the other in the genre) to be responsible for making street magic a viable venue, as it were.

Thanks again for the info, Dick. I have never, never considered that this could be done with rope.
This would have to be one of the cleanest cut and restored rope effects ever, since there is no ditching of the extra piece, since there is none. Also, my fellow magi, thanks for the great info on Jeff Sheridan's string effect. Sometimes some of the best, cleanest effects in magic are forgotten. What I would like to add is that in this effect, the ends could even be marked with a marker, before they are magically joined together, to subtly show that there is no switch! Scott |

There is an effect such as this in Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic and from your descriptions, it sounds like the same method. There really are some hidden gems in the beginners books! I had overlooked it due to the set up, but I may incorporate it now.

Hi guys!
I used to do the C&R with Jack Miller's Hold-Out. Just thinking out loud here, but that would work with string too. Think: Rubber Band. Doug |

Thanks David, also.
Dr. Ayala asked about printed sources. There's a copy of Mark's book on my shelf. I've been mentally searching through a pile of "kid" magic books. I just skipped right over Mark's excellent book. I shall check it out forthwith--maybe even threethwith! It's the old 'hide it in plain sight', eh?

Very true is the statement about magical gems "hiding in plain sight". At the same time, it has long been said (and again, truly) that in the art of magic if you want to keep something secret, put it in a book. |

In my small copy of the Mark Wilson book, it is on page 355. This "small" copy is the so-called 'portable' sized version.

Woop, I contributed something useful to the Café
I've not been into magic as long as you guys, so Mark Wilson's is still my main resource for non-card/coins. While I'm here, I would recommend performing cut and restored string with a strawberry lace(bitten and restored). More for impromptu effects with friends perhaps, but I've done it at some small gigs and people are instantly intrigued as you pull it out and have no idea what you intend to do with it. And they can keep it/eat it at the end, and you can eat all the evidence too! |

Right David! --YOUSE DONE GOOD!!!
Years ago, Dan David, a young friend whom I was mentoring, called to ask about information on the OSWALD WILLIAMS (I think==this is 30 years ago!) routine in which the magician is 'mugged' and the mugger grabs the magi's handkerchief, tossing in his watch, wallet, etc. Then the hdkf. (DevilHdkf) is MT and watch is back on wrist, etc. I immediately gave him 2 or 3 sources in books like Sid Lorraine's "Patter",. He was 'flabbergasted'. "How did you know what books?" I laughed and told him that I actually READ, the books that I bought! Well, at 81, my 'mental' computer isn't always as fast as it once was! So, I thank you for the referral to Mark's book. In my "big" edition, it's p247. I checked out the Magic Inc. catalog, and found the late Chuck Stanfield's trick that I mentioned in my first post on this topic (April 8). I was mistaken. Apparently, it doesn't involve the same principle. I found in an ad flyer, mailed out 50+ years ago, by Mgc Inc the complete inst. for Charlie Miller's DUNBURY DELUSION. Typically, Charlie had an interesting twist on the basic concept. Alex Elmsley had written it up! PM ME, and I'll 'duke you in'. This was written up about ten years before I knew both Charlie and Alex. See what happens when you get involved in a 'session'! STRAWBERRY LACE--I'm guessing the SL is a licorice twist--candy! Interesting possibility! Mark's 'Complete Course", like Henry Hay's "Amateur Magicians Handbook" is, what I used to call, "The poor man's Tarbell!" If I remember correctly, Walter Gibson, prolific magic writer, ghosted the book for Mark. Many old classics are renamed with 'updated' titles. I must read through much of the text to learn that it's a bit that I've used for eons! Oh! The Inc. flyer notes that the earliest printed mention that Jay could find was in HUGARD'S MAGIC MONTHLY (January 1945). Charlie states that the first "large scale version", using cord, was shown to him by Roland Winder. (I don't remember Mr. Winder). The flyer also advertises the "right cord" for the routine. (The flyer--"Trick Talk"-- was Volume II, #1 Fall and Winter 1959.) Keep in touch, David! These archaeological digs can lead to surprising places. --The Karl Germaine c/r may have been an 'off shoot' of this principle, or vice versa!
