Missing Link,
It doesn't require any set-up or gimmickery. As far as angles are concerned...you can't do it surrounded. Take a look at the demo at http://www.ellusionist.com/order/king.htm Thanks, Corey

Okay...I figured that the $17 wasn't a lot to shell out on a trick, so I decided to get the King Rising. It's....different. My mouth dropped wide open when I reached the point in the video where it tells you the secret. It reminded me of those times when I would see a trick over and over and couldn't figure it out...then I'd buy it and kick myself in the $&* for not thinking of it. It's pretty creative...I've never seen it done before. Corey King (the creator of the effect) is definately one who thinks outside the box. The angels are...eh...not that great. With the Baladucci you could be AROUND the 45 degree mark...with King Rising you have to be RIGHT ON the mark....especially if your performing for more than 3 people. The effect came with a few notes from Corey King...he says he was able to pull off the effect for 10 people. They must have been in one big straight line in order to all be amazed. I don't see any other way you could pull it off for that many people with out getting caught. Obviously it can't be performed surrounded and no one can look under your feet. The claims are correct...you can see both feet leave the ground, it is NOT Zero Gravity, you don't have to do anything to your shoes, and it is almost totally impromptu. One of the things that they don't tell you in the ad's and such is that you need a jacket to help cover the dirty work. Now, don't get me wrong....its not like the pocket levitator where you need to use the jacket for cover during the entire effect (In fact, part of the patter for this effect is describing how other magicians need to use a jacket to cover their feet during the levitation).....the jacket is used in this to help cover certain actions that create the effect. You don't NEED the jacket...you can use your creative mind to come up with another way to help cover the dirty work...its just the jacket seems to fit in very well with the patter. Also, it looks very natural. All in all..its a nice effect if you can get it to look right. You'll need some practice in order to get all the actions into one fluid motion. If your curious about the effect, then get it. If not, then get it anyway. It's only $17 bucks...and as of now, there is only 1 place where you can purchase this effect. http://www.ellusionist.com I've never been a big fan of Brad Christian, but curiousity killed me this time, so I had to see what all the fuss was about.

Thanks for the comments, KoS.
Yes, the jacket isn't necessary. I used to rely heavily on misdirection. With some creativity you could come up with a million different variations. Good luck and again, thanks. -Corey

Hey guys, I just wanted to add my own review since I went ahead and spent the $17. ERm...I think it's VERY clever. Pretty tricky to pull off, to make sure I had a decent basis for this little mini-review I just went and did it for my mom (although she thinks everything I do is amazing so it's not exactly representative.) Anyway her jaw dropped (more theatrical than genuine I imagine ) I agree with what KoS wrote, I actually didn't use a jacket when I performed it and it worked fine so I can't complain about that. I just feel like for two bucks less I could have gotten Dante's practical methods If you're big on levitations or it's just killing you to know how it's done (like it did me) it's probably worth it but otherwise I'd actually pass on this one.

Com'on,
What tricks not "tricky" to pull off? This is a great trick! Just use it sparingly, and please don't show people the bottom of your shoes. You need to act. Great job Corey!! I love it. Apparently using the quote tag is pretty "tricky" too I was referring to the angles not "the move."

But here is the million dollar question; Is it that much better than the balducci and worth carrying stuff around with you for $17? Or would you just assume do the balducci and be completely clean?
This isn't a rhetorical question, by the way. |

King rising is totally clean. Just like the Balducci.
BTW, I wass performing this today for my students and colleagues and they were floored. People screamed. It is that good. Balducci's angles are a lot worse than King Rising. Just get into a corner and you are set. PS On second thought, don't buy it. Don't even think about it. It's mine ALL MINE!!!!!!

I don't have this effect, but after watching the demo it looks very similar to the Balducci except that the front of the both feet seem to rise, which look quite eerie. It actually looks like it is based on the Balducci concept.
My question is this: How practical is this levitation? Practicality is very important to me, and if I need a jacket to cover something or need to do something fishy with my feet beforehand then its not worth it for me. Lets put it this way; is it as practical as the Balducci, which is impromptu, or does it require a setup?

What about someone posting a flat out comparison between the Balducci, Zero Gravity, and now King Rising?

Ok, lots of questions to answer here but I will do my best.
It's impromptu...you don't NEED a jacket, but it does help. You can rely on misdirection for it, which was how the effect was originally done. But, the jacket idea came around later and it seem like it's the best and more practical way of doing it. It's hard to say if there is a set-up or not. If by set-up you mean engaging some kind of a gimmick, then no, there is no gimmick. The Balducci -- angles are ok, but you are turned away from your audience. Both heels rise but you don't get the full illusion that both FEET are in the air. Impromptu, can be done anywhere Zero Gravity -- good angles, requires some work be done to your *****, can be done improptu, if you are wearing the gimmick. Not practical to wear at all times. King Rising -- better angles than Balducci, not as wide as Zero Gravity. No gimmick needed, no work done to your *****. Can be done anywhere. I hope I don't sound biased as it is my effect. I tried to lay out each levitations advantages and disadvantages without being biased. If more customers could give reviews of it, it would be great because I don't want to come across as biased and would rather have people who have bought it and had the time to play with it comment on it. Thanks, Corey

Corey, have you seen an effect called "Wild Levitation"? It is new, from what I've seen, on the Hocus Pocus website. It looks similar to Fearson's Fantastic Floatation which requires a gimmick and a coat. This appears to be a slightly lesser grandiose effect/setup to accomplish the same thing, from a slightly different position, from the looks of it. How do you find Fearson's Floating Floatatio, in comparison to these other effects? What are the relative costs of these methods when compared to their illusions (I know the Balducci requires no props, only explanation of the effect)? The worst thing I ever saw was a non-magician trying to do Blaine's (aka Balducci) effect, but not understanding the need for angles or dramatic acting or anything. |

Fearson's fantastic flotation?
I have two. Both are unfinished. Any takers? The gimmick is really tricky to make. I mean really tricky. King Rising is the best. Do the Balducci and King rising and you are really flying. James

I find it is possible to do the setup without the coat while hiding everything behind one leg. The angles are tough, especially with pants than cover over the shoes. I have to lift my pant-legs for it to look good from a little wider angle.
It's hard and I don't know if I can ever use it. But it does look pretty good if done right. I hate the whole jacket idea, it just doesn't go smooth. Jonathan Grant |
