The very best close-up effect uses no props, involves the on lookers, amazes them, and entertains them to the point where they walk away laughing and applauding.

For me, when I'm asked to "do a trick", I reach into my pocket and bring out an empty match box. I open it, and introduce my trained flea Chadwick.

After some by-play and bits of business, I ask to use a ladies finger ring. I gather everyone in real close as I levitate the flea, passing the finger ring over the floating flea.

As a finish, Chadwick does a great flip landing in his box. I close the box, hand back the ring, thanking my audience. Works every time!

Continued success,

Don Alan's chop cup routine.
It's straight to the point without being clinical, and gets a terrific reaction every single time.

You can always find a piece of tissue paper.

Gemini Ring
3 ball routine

They take up no room in your pocket, and are strong effects.

Three card monte using a borrowed bill to demonstrate what it looks like in the real world. You end up blowing them away with the bent corner scam AND usually end up with the borrowed cash "prop" as a tip.

Sponge Balls

C.M.H. - it kills cuz its simple. but the thing is, its a "quickie" and usually its hard to deflect people who want you to do the thing a second time.

Dots Magic using the paddle move
I would, however contest that there is in REALITY very little pportunity to perform what could actually be termed "close-up" magic.
