It looks like I'm going to be performing at a youth camp this summer for about 800 students and adults. This will be a great opportunity to communicate the Gospel and to hopefully gain some more opportunities for future performances. I'll be doing one or two effects per night leading into the worship time. It will be kind of a ice breaker thing.

I'm nervous about using all of my effects up in one week and then a church booking me for a later performance in which they have seen all of my best effects. Have you ever had this dilema? Am I making too big a deal about it? Is the solution just to learn more effects?

Thanks for any advice you might have.

If the church presentation is for the same people and you are planning on using the same effects, I'd say time to learn some new ones. They most likely would like to see some of the same again again, but I would really limit the repeated effects. If you are only talking about a handful of the same people in the new presentations, then you should be able to get away with more repeats. Just my 2 cents.

Maybe I just use some of my best effects in hopes of putting on a great show and getting some more bookings; as those bookings come in, then I may need to "upgrade" to some new effects.

I ran into the same thing a few years ago. I work in student ministry myself(9 years). I use illusions as illustrations with my lessons a lot and have found out that if I look at my stuff that I have, and use a few creative juices(and get advice from other magicians) I can combine a few of my existing tricks(TT, sponge balls, Rope, Silks, Cards etc...) and come up with something entirely new and better than one illusion alone.

As a side note:It's nice to call the main speaker and see what God has laid on that persons heart to talk about and see if you can tie in your illusion with it.

You can use the same tricks in different ways, so that it still feels fresh. I've seen the same magician do his routine as a talkig show once and as a musical routine the next. Perhaps do a comical routine in one version.
