I was hoping to get an original slippery sam set. It was on the big auction site. It went for $204. I never expected it to go that high. Seems one of the premier coin makers could make it for less than that. It must be the fact it's no longer made? Collectors item?

I think you are right, that other good coin makers could make this for less (though perhaps not Lassen or Schoolcraft would be higher). The reasons I bid on it were because it is an original Steve Dusheck item, it is very, very rare (I believe - this is the only one I have seen on the big auction site over the last 2 years, though I certainly could have missed others), and it is a type of effect I enjoy doing very much.

Who was the seller? I won't buy coins there because someone who uses a couple different names sells fakes as genuine Lassens or Schoolcrafts... Buyer beware

The seller has over 4,400 transactions and a 100% rating. He/she is not the infamous fake Lassen seller

Can you please post a link to the listing. I have never seen the set

Just search on slippery sam set on google. The auction is over now but it should still show on google.
Chessman, did you get it or drop out of the bidding? I didn't bid, was going to, but it went from 40 some to over a hundred inbetween peeks. It would be cool to have the set. As for orgiginal, I don't think there is any doubt since it came with original instructions.

I did get it, but not by much. I wouldn't have been surprised if I had won, or if I had lost. You just never know with these things.

Good for you, hope you enjoy it. Glad you already knew the fakes were out there and checked the sellers rep, I just hate seeing people get ripped off there.

Glad I didn't bid against you. I didn't think about a Café member buying it until it was over - then I started this thread.

Yes that's the Dusheck item. Mine did not come with the "new" instructions.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

Hi sir, if you ever decide to sell.... |

Shakuni, unless you are a Dusheck fan/collector, you may do better (price-wise) by going through another manufacturer to obtain the items to make up a set such as this, as the items, themselves, are commonly available.
BTW, as this particular "set" is looong out of production, and Steve no longer produces this set, I hope I'm not advocating anything out-of-turn on the above... I'm remembering the DD saga, but an individual obtaining the individual pieces for his own use may be significantly different? This particular item fetched a higher price, IMO, because they are scarce, and because it came from their creator, Steve Dusheck.

I would venture to guess ( purely speculation ) that you would spend in the $150.00 range getting the 4 items involved made in the same manner. So I really don't think you overpaid since you get directions ( not included with individual purchases of the coins ) and the pure collectibility issue of owning an original. I think you did well.

WOW!!! I was lucky enough to get one of these too, and again directly from Steve Dusheck quite a while back now.
I have a few things from Steve, and value all of them highly as he is quite an ingenious magic thinker and maker, not to mention a really good magician. And I digress here but Chessman, I also was into mechanical puzzles some time ago (And those guys are crazy serious about puzzles like folks are here about magic) and came across another fine craftsman and unique puzzle maker named Marcel Gillen, from France, I believe. He made large metal chess piece mechanical puzzles, things of beauty. I think I had 3-4 of the 5 or 6(?) pieces he did back then, a pawn, knight, queen, king and rook. They are about 6-8" high with very good weight to them, nice to the touch and feel. You have to figure out how to open them to get to a surprise inside. Think they are collectors items now. Anyway, I remember getting the Queen, I believe, directly from Marcel after tracking him down in Europe and him finding one that he had still left somewhere around his house...I think he signed it, too? It was all quite an experience, and actually led me back to magic eventually. Here's a pic of 4 of the pieces. I think the Knight was very elusive to get anywhere but from Marcel himself, and I remember it being said that he only made a few of them (he actually made a lot of these pieces himself, with a few offered commercially, I believe... And I believe there was also a Bishop in the collection that I once saw somewhere? That's pretty good stuff coming from an esteemed Mathemetician. http://smallpuzzlecollection.blogspot.co......ook.html

That's pretty interesting, Marion! Great that it led you back to magic
I've always loved chess, but <sigh> never could advance as I desired. I wanted to be just a very good "club player" but it never really panned out. Haven't played in a number of years. I confine myself to enjoying the games and biographies of the greats.

The set arrived today, and I am quite pleased. No thanks to the PO, though - the seller, at my request, sent the coins w/ signature confirmation. Well, I worked from home that afternoon and the carrier just left a notice in my mailbox! Didn't even attempt to knock or ring. On top of that, the carrier even left another package (unrelated) on my front doorstep! So she even went to the door with a package, but didn't bother to knock for the other one...)
Post Office rant over. In any case, I thought I would post some thoughts on the set. - Steve did an admirable job on these. The fit and finish is very good. The only problem I have with sets like these is one that is very difficult to overcome - because of shell has to be a bit bigger than the insert coin, you've got to be very careful if you want to show the sets in your hands with the coin on top of the shell (with the shell's rim closer to your body in prep for the turnover move - called "The Dusheck Shove" ), but Steve's set does better than most, here. - he's done some work to the edge of the half dollar coin that helps in the deception. - even with the shim's, the coverage is good. Especially on the copper coin. - the instructions come with 8 effects you can do with them. Good stuff.

I'm jealous.
And still glad I didn't get in a bidding war with you. Any idea what these went for new? The fact that they are out of production kind of makes the answer meaningless - other than I wish I had bought a set when they were in production!! I forgot...are there any magnetic properties, or is the [ just shimmed?

No idea what they went for, new, but it would be interesting to know.
Yes, the shells are shimmed and the coins are magnetic. It doesn't have a lot of strength, side-to-side, so the coins can still misalign if you are not careful. The magnets hold much more in an "up-and-down" manner, if that makes sense.

And the ['s and coins are interchangeable? A lot of similarities to Cartel Coins (which I have) only completely different approach. And first to do so.

I would not say they are interchangeable.
The silver coin is meant for the copper shell, and the copper coin is meant for the silver shell. As they are different sized coins (and the copper English Penny may have been shaved a bit to fit the silver shell), and meant for the opposite coin shell, the fit when putting the copper coin in the copper shell is noticeably loose. The fit of the silver coin in the silver shell is quite good, though. Of course, if you only show the shell side, you're just fine.
