Scotch & Soda, expanded shell, and IT (show me a levitation with no gimmicks?)

Sometimes I'll bring in a hooked coin, just because it's so easy to bring in and out of play, and you can hide it anywhere (even on the back of a spectator's jacket!)

I also regularly use (my version of) Beelzebub's Letter (a signed vanished coin reappears taped to a card inside a sealed envelope), described in John Mulholland's "Book of Magic". I have to make a new gimmick for that one about every fourth or fifth showing, but WELL worth the effort!
...what if I could read your mind?

So, just for balance, I'll go the exact OPPOSITE of Lance.

Slights impress other magicians. Real audiences neither know nor care HOW you perform your effect. They just care that its a good one. And "real magicians", IMHO, are there for the benefit of their audience not other magicians. (Thats a bit of an over statement but certainly no more so then lance's opposing one above.)

David Copperfield did some very impressive close up card work in his first special... and I'm sure no one but other magicians even remember that Smile He is remembered for his big stage stuff, which is ALL very large, very expensive gimmicks Smile

What REALLY makes a magician, IMHO, is presentation. A truly great magician can take an every day occurrence and make it seem a minor miracle just by how he (or she) focuses your attention on it.

To paraphrase something Aldo Colombini said in a lecture "I can do this with two double lifts, a Mexican turnover and a (insert your favorite card slight here)or I can use a gimmicked card. I'll use the gimmicked card! It's easier and allows me to focus on the presentation"

To that, I would only add one caution. Too many gimmicks, gaffs and fekes make your sportcoat heavy and makes it hang funny on you. There should be a balance in the middle somewhere between all gaffs and all finger flicking.

I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.
