Hi,
I think one of the key things is that when talking on the phone the client has confidence in your ability/knowledge, I try to develop this with the coversation similar to that stated by me earlier.. I am a natural chatter and I really enjoy talking to clients that ring, Like Emazdad I tend to joke and have fun with them and I think that this helps them to like me and have confidence in me. I actualy had a lady who refered some one to me tell me privately that after talking to me the lady she refered asked here if I was married because I sounded nice, Maybe I should go on blind date! Phillip, where do you find all these single Mums (Moms for those in the US)?
I can't ever remember having done a show for a single Mum. Althought 9 times of of 10 if the father books me he is either a single Dad (Dod for those in the US), or has remarried & his wife is not the mother of the children. I once had a single Mum try and book my show. She could not afford to pay me but wanted to do a barter trade for her services. She was a stripper.

Hi Mikael,
You've got a great discussion going on here. The information alone is like a college level course in marketing or round table discussion at a convention. When I read your original post, I had quite a different take on it. You said you were asked by an acquaintance. To me that means they were hoping for a bargain basement next to nothing price, sales efforts would have fallen on deaf ears, as anything above free was already too much money. I always state a range, "Well shows can go from anywhere from $120.00 to $3000.00, it all depends upon what you need and want." From there the marketing and old fashioned haggling can begin.

So she might have judged me by the looks and decided that I was a fake But you are right, he DID say this too: "Since I know you, can't you give me a different price? Becuse it was a h..ck of an hourly rate, it's even more than I have!(he is a car salesman)" By which I replied: "Yes, I thought that because you know me, I'll charge you $ 75 instead of $ 65!" Just a thought I'd like to share and what I bring up in conversation with friends (not customers.)Only close friends as I wouldn't think to ask anyone such a personal question myself.
Yes, it does sound like a lot of money but there are also a lot of unpaid hours in preperation before a show. One that the customer never sees or is aware of. My time is money. The numerous unpaid hours I have spent rehearsing ,attending magic meetings, atttending conventions, purchasing equiptment, packing my case, driving to and fro to the shows. All that is taken into consideration when you are in the entertainment industry. For every hour the customer sees me, believe me there has been several hours prep time before I even walk through their doors. (Yes, as years go on it has become quicker, but I am forever always trying to improve so will always continue to do the above.) Chrystal |

Hi Andy, I'm the other way round 90% of my work is booked by the ladies. Like Phillip I meet a lot of single mum's. In fact as I mention Mum and Dad during the show to the birthday child I have to remember to ask the parent what the situation is so I don't put size 8 shoe (uk sizes) in size 9 mouth. Again.
Mikeal, One thing you will allways get in this business is friends after a cheaper or freebie show, I find friends and ex-shipmates from long ago who I havn't seen for years phone up out of the blue for a chat and then ask about a party. I have a rule that I only do a cheapy for very close friends, and even then they have to have it on a weekday not a weekend.
Yours Funfully

HI Andy,
I find a lot of the time the Grandparents are actually paying for the show. Phillip |
