Anybody out there using this Chop Cup routine from Bannon's Impossiblia? I just bought the book Sunday and a brand new set of cups at a convention. I was wondering if anybody uses this routine, which IS PHENOMENAL!!! and if you do, what do you use as your "assistant"? Nerfuls aren't available anymore so I'm using little Hpmies and Nickelodian characters from vending machines.

I think Frank Starsinic performs this. PM him. He's a cool guy.

Cool, I know Frank he's is cool. I've actually adapted it for me so there's not as much time in the pocket. I love the thinking and theory behind it though, makes it much more fun.
I now only have the surprise appearance of an "angry beaver" from the Nickelodian show that I refer to as my nemesis who is always trying to get my balls...fun for kids, funny to adults. It's ALL in the way you present that line, make sure to do it right so as not to insult anyone or make them think you're using foul humor, haha. I use him as the fun surprise in the beginning of the routine then go on with a Chop Cup routine after he is at a safe distance and being watched by the spectators. A little Tommy Wonder stuff goes on now. It's fun. |

This is the routine I do. Ron is correct. I love it. Best one I've come across so far.
I bought some character from Target and cut his head off and used it. Everybody knew right away who it was and now I also know that it is "Jimmy Neutron". That John Bannon has some great creative patter for just about everything, eh?

I use a head from a Lego model. I have to agree, the routine is terrific as it gets away from the I-know-better-than-you premise.

Twisted,
I use something called "Goofy Smile Face w/ Putty Eyes". I ordered them from the Oriental Trading Company. They may be smaller than you want, I use a small chop cup when I do the routine. Their eyes pop out when you squeeze them. Sometimes, the thin membrane that holds the putty in bursts when you squeeze them, causing the eyes to explode, which adds a nice touch. Nando

Does anybody else feel that this routine has too much time in the pocket as it's written? I eliminated the nut sequence and do a very short standard chop routine (about three phases) after the appearance of my "angry beaver" or as I refer to him "melvin, the master of the cup." Then I have the two jumbo loads and a surprise load at the end. What do you all do with it and what do you think?

I got rid of the nut sequence for use with the Loomis in-the-hands cup only because of using one hand as the table, it's easier that way.
Otherwise, no I don't think there's too much pocket-time.

Could you outline the trick, bare bones, just effects? I Love Bannon stuff. I have the tapes but my friend has the book. I always thought they were the same but I guess there is more in the book. Thanks.

I've been performing the Don Alan routine for years. I absolutley love the chop cup. I like the routine simple and streamlined. Three different sequences to reveal the ball and then the final loads.

Nobody, NOOOO BUDDY can do the chop cup like Paul Daniels. He featured it onstage at the Tropican in Las Vegas and killed with it.

I heard that Paul Daniels does basically the Don Alan routine. I wish I could see Paul Daniels do this. I don't understand what makes it so awesome!!!
Also the Bannon books are about 1000% better than the videos. He has a fantastic sense of humor that comes shining through in the books. On the videos he is much more stiff and rehearsed. Bannon's routine is not about the effects but about the patter and the way it was put together. I think he's done such a fantastic job of putting this effect together. You need to just read it and you'll see.

NO Frank. Paul does NOT do the Don Alan routine. Paul does it standing and it is based on Ken Brooke's routine. He gets a gent out of the audience to stand alongside.
It is Paul's lines, bits and timing that sells it. Sometimes he does NOT have anyone up to help, but talks to someone in the audience.

Thanks Pete.
Is it still possible to see this on a regularly scheduled basis somewhere? Anywhere? How come you get to see everything?

Paul did this at the last WMS in Las Vegas. I booked him two or three times in the past for IBM shows, and we are good friends, visiting one another when he is in LA and/or I am in London.
I haven't see everything, but in 50+ years of going to conventions and working from Nice, France to Tokyo, and having produced 11 National IBM Convention shows and 7 Japanese TV Specials you get to see a bit. Oh, and Paul has NOT released his Chop Cup routine on any videos, but somewhere floating about it is on a tape of one of his TV shows.
