Well, at least one.
Hello everyone! I live in Laramie, Wyoming and have been doing magic for about 7 or so years now (started late, in my early 20s). I've swung by here a few times, but finally felt like making my presense official! I always felt like one should provide credentials for this sorta thing, so here's a video of me doing oil & water (please bear with the extended introduction, and poor audio): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7pECAjY4zs A few years back I bought the Ascanio books (all 4) and sense then have been in search for -soltura- as he put it, so as awkward as my presentation may be I hope my handling is elegant. Other than that, I hope a brief bio will not bore you: I don't do a lot of performing, mostly for friends and people in the bar (it's a good way to get free drinks) but I like to pull out my busking table during the summer and perform at the local farmer's market. I hold high standards for myself and have been working for years on a unified routine that I think I am close to actually getting down - which is actually my main motivation for coming here: my girlfriend loves magic, and as such, she has no interest in methods so I'd hate to ruin it for her and talk shop. I have no one in town to talk about trick selection, handling, routine management, variety, and all the other things that go into the "perfect routine" Perhaps I can be pointed in the right direction to find some like minded individuals who can help me nail this down. I hope to fit in amongst you! Thanks. |

Welcome Samson,
You have come to the right place. What you are doing is amazing, what you are saying needs editing. Oils and Water is so visual that what you say should only support that beautiful illusion. (I overwrite my science based patter too so I'm coming from a place of total empathy.) Are you repeating some of the handling more than needed like maybe a physical stammer? Clean that up a little so it's less "tickish" and more simple. I LOVED the effect and your skills are evident. Keep up the good work and you'll soon have a miracle in your hands. -Mary Mowder |

Hi Samson,
Well, since you now have the support and fellowship of the Magic Café, you are in the envious position of being THE MAGICIAN THERE! I am fairly new. Hey, you didn't need to provide credentials, but that is very nice of you. Be sure to spend some time looking through the posts, and be sure to post things we can help you with. You are about to be amazed at the appearance of many helpful magicians from all over. So be happy with your monopoly in Laramie, and looking forward to hearing from you and interacting on the M.C. Got to disappear, scott |

I believe that Laramie is not far from Cheyenne and I'm sure there must be some magicians located there. Try a Google search, or check out the Cheyenne phone book for magic shops and magicians advertising their services.
I second Mary's comment that you need to edit the patter. I would do this: working from this clip transcribe, word for word, what you say. Then print it out. Go over it and cross out every unnecessary word or concept. Evaluate the choice of these unusual cards. I have two concerns about them. You have to take a fair amount of time explaining just what they are. And, because of their unusual nature, your audience may assume they are "trick" cards from a magic shop. I wasn't sure exactly where your opening explanation stopped, and the patter for the trick began. Have a very clear opening line as well as a closing. I do have one handling suggestion. When you hold a fan of cards in one hand and put cards in between them with your other, the hand holding the card you are inserting blocks out view of the action. It's vital for the effect that the spectators know that the cards are interlaced. Work with a mirror and try to do this so that it's "crystal." Dennis "Denny" Loomis

Samson,
Back in the seventies I toured in your area with my full evening show Magic Capades. I think that we shot across the southern part of Wyoming doing shows in Cheyenne, Laramie, and Rock Springs. However, I remember that Stan Kramien dragged me up to a little town way north of Rock Springs called Atlantic City, Wyoming. He knew of a "great" restaurant there that he wanted to show me. The meal was excellent, but I'm not sure it was worth the long drive. As I recall, Atlantic City is about 75 miles north of Rock Springs so we drove about 150 miles off our route for that meal! I still have a few snap shots of Atlantic City which was trying to be a little tourist attraction. I'm sure it was tough because it was so far out in the middle of nowhere. Dennis "Denny" Loomis

To Denny~~~
Trust Stan Kramien to find a restaurant! I thought I had played every 'high grass' town in Wyoming! I vividly remember Pinedale on a cold winter morning. The principal had to ("discuss")with a committee of church ladies the kind of 'magic' show he had booked. He almost had to cancel. After the program as I was heading for the motor home, a lady stopped me to ask if I "did that" in all my programs. She was referring to the 'illusion sequence' in which I explain what an illusion 'is' etc. Of course the 'real' Atlantic City is in New Joisey! The one you went to is just an illusion!

Hey all, I appreciate the constructive feedback! Thank you very much. I also appreciate the warm welcomes!
Dennis, I've never driven that far for food, but there's a great pizza place in Centennial about 30 miles west of here that's worth the drive. You know, Wyoming can be a tough state to take a wrong turn on, because if you do there not be another road to turn off of for hours I hope your's and Dick's touring experience were good though. |

Hello Samson!
You have the whole state to yourself! No competition! (Of course, GOOD competition is GOOD for you. --you must run a bit faster, to stay ahead!) I remember Laramie very well. When I was touring for National Assemblies, I played every wide spot in the road that had a 'knowledge box'. Laramie stands out as I spent a couple weeks there managing a phone room for Stan Kramien. It was definitely a success financially. You are also not that far from Ft. Collins, and Denver. Since you are out there in the big hat country, you obviously don't have a lot of magic 'companionship'. As a teenager, in the '40a, I was in the same situation. I went to every circus or carnival side show that played nearby--to see, and hopefully meet, the 'magician'. Often, I was disappointed, as, also often, I knew more magic (from books) than the "magician' did. But, I learned a lot from them about how to sell the show that I had. I also saw every school show magician that came near. --They were usually more knowledgeable about magic, and I owe what success I've had to them. There aint many side shows left...ditto school show magicians. (I mean TOURING PROFESSIONALS) Of course, there's an occasional TV show with magic. Your best bet, at this point is probably a good book. ("...Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read anyway..." --Groucho Marx, I think. Ken Weber wrote a book: "MAXIMUM ENTERTAINMENT", about 10 years ago. It's about $40. and it has not a single effect in it. I didn't say 'trick' because a trick really only exists while it is being performed! The sub title is "Director's Notes for Magicians and Mentalists". Although I did have access to TARBELL as a teenager (a magician that I met, loaned me the whole set) IF I HAD HAD ACCESS TO A BOOK LIKE WEBER'S, IT WOULD HAVE SAVE ME LOTS OF $$$$$, AND LOTS OF TIME. (I'm now retired, but I had a show "on the road" for most of my life,--I'm now 81. I recommend that you invest in Ken's book and STUDY IT. If you're serious about learning about performing a magic show, whether it's parlor, platform or just intimate, casual presentations, you'll never regret spending this $40! Hee Hee! I should get a commission for 'pitching' Ken's book! I have two copies! One for my book shelf, and one to lend out to young high school kids who are serious about magic and can't always afford to buy it. The #2 volume is constantly 'checked out'! Welcome to our motley crew here in this 'cafe'....... Oh... Here's the contact info. for the book: KEN WEBER PRODUCTIONS...1983 Marcus Ave...#221...Lake Success, NY 11042... or http://www.ken-weber.com or maxent@ken-weber.com Dick Oslund Sneaky, underhanded, devious, and surreptitious, itinerant mountebank!

I do something similar, Dick, when magicians come through. I go to university here, and we usually get at least one show a semester. I talk to the magician's afterwards with "Can I see your classic pass?" This usually gets a chuckle and we talk shop for a bit. I've met some really nice guys, and some not so nice ones this way.
Also, one time I was in Denver and met Dave Neighbors at a restaurant. He was super nice, and super generous in showing me many tricks and giving me tips on coin handling. It does sound like we had similar starts; meeting magicians in what way we can and learning the rest from books. I mostly do magic as a hobby, but I like to busk during the Summers, so I'm not really looking to do anything professional with it. Mostly I'd hope to be like Dr. Daley, or Ascanio in that just being a very strong amateur (although I don't aim for the same noteriaty). I appreciate the suggestion of Mr. Weber's book; currently I found a few volumes of Tarbell at a used book store, so I'm strolling through those. |
