OK, I think we all agree that the quality of the prop says nothing about the skill of the performer. Having a high quality prop will not take the place of practice, skill, innate ability, etc. However once you have mastered your performance I think that quality props can add to that performance.
I think we also agree that the spectator doesn't know the difference between gaffs and that is because they should never be aware of a gaff. I personally agree that there is a pride in ownership that comes with the high end tools but it is even more important to talk about pride of performing with or using the tool. Being able to justify the expense based on your performance skill is a great feeling. Anyway, I am glad we are all getting our opinions out here in a "mostly" civil manner! |

Pride of ownership is certainly there. For me, it is the least of the reasons for owning some high-end gaffs, but it is still there.

"I'm going silver" has nothing to do with "pride of ownership" or some ego driven reason to have ALL SILVER GAFFS. I have a number of miscellaneous gaffs and I am putting something together with some of these gaffs and I realized I had more silver gaffs that would suit my purpose then I had clad gaffs... and I ordered two custom silver pieces from Johnson that will be used to complete my project. It was a matter of practicality... not based on bragging rights to have all silver. But thanks for playing. (P.S. The gaff makers I listed above is ordered in my opinion of who I think does the best job at making coin gaffs) |

I am on the way to achieving "pride of ownership". Have just ordered from Mr Lassen. Never having tried to contact him before, but having read his website and blog, I just called him on the phone, allowing for the 7 hour time difference. I only called twice. The first time I got the machine, and taking the advice on it I didn't leave a message. The second time, a few hours later, I got through and had a very pleasant conversation. My coins are now ordered.
It was perfectly easy to contact him, and he is a perfectly charming person to do business with. But then again, I was brought up to be polite to people, not least to those who excel in what they do. I'm a curmudgeon, perhaps, but the fact that Todd Lassen prefers to communicate by actually talking to people, raises him higher in my estimation than having an automated email response. Have you ever tried to converse with an automated email response? I have. It just kept saying the same thing, and we both went round in circles. Or rather, I went round in a spin and then smashed up my computer with an ice-axe. Over the years I've met some pretty mind blowing craftsmen, people who turn it into an art form. Ten or so years ago, my parent's Georgian grandfather clock fell and smashed into thousands of pieces. The man who put it back together, into working order, was not on the internet, nor was he listed in the yellow pages. It was word of mouth. What do people think Todd Lassen does all day? And why does he need to change anything at all? Tom. |

Whether from pride or paracticality, your decisions to go with higher quality gaffs and choice of gaffers is impeccable. I agree with your ordering. On a serious note, Al, your project sounds interesting. I hope you post what you come up with. Tom, congratulations on joining the Pride and Practicality Club. Alan |

I perform with clad ikes and kennedys for family
and friends a lot and just to practice. But when it comes down to my paid events.Silver is the way to go.I think it really shows your professionalism to the audience. Todd |

I wonder what the results of such a poll might be if you performed 2ce for the same audience - once with clad halves, and once with silver Walkers or silver dollars?
I would wager that the audience would certainly notice the difference, but there would be a lot of variables, depending on how the coins were used, presented, etc.... The magic wouldn't necessarily be better, but the difference in the coins would change the spec's perspective of the tricks in various ways.

Yes, the magic (speaking just silver vs. clad) wouldn't necessarily be better, but the experience, as a whole, for the audience would (could) be significantly more interesting.

If you're amazement quotient is high enough, props are rather secondary... that's all I'm saying. I have nothing against the high priced gaffs, but they are just an end to the means... not vice-versa. |

Hey Al, you seem like a Distinguished Gentleman, I bet you'd look great performing with a soft set of Morgan Dollars.

As a magician I usually wear pajamas and golfing cap (if the performance calls for formal wear... then I wear a top hat). I use my own homemade flipper coins (two ordinary Kennedy halves and some duct tape), a copper/silver (glued together) and a variety of foreign coins that sort of match our American halves (audience can't tell the difference). Most of my gigs are in dive bars, low lighting and my audiences are rather drunk (that explains their inability to scope out my coins too closely). I'll normally work for free booze. It's primo work. I don't need a soft set of Morgans. |
