Trickywillie refers to the well-known mentalist who "wanted to go to bookstores to browse".
It's a bit like a dinner party in London at which Groucho Marx and T.S. Eliot were the guests of honor. Marx, unbeknownst to most people, was a poetry buff, while Tom Eliot was a comedy buff. All T.S. wanted to talk about was the Marx Brothers' comedy routines, while all Groucho wanted to talk about was Eliot's poetry! BTW, sheesh, Harry; did either of us say anything about stopping posting? You folks would be lucky if we'd shut up! But I'm afraid -- in my case, at least -- I'm going to keep babbling on! (Mumblepeas, at least, makes some sense!) (BTW, I have NO idea what signifigance that has; I just like the story!) |

Is it just me or do any of you other folks notice how much magicians whine and cry about petty issues? You mean like whining about others' posts when you could simply scroll past them? That is the most interesting phenomenon about the web to me. If its writ, I gotta read it. One needs to choose their "battles" wisely. I will keep it brief. In person I walk away from newbies who simply refuse to get it... what ever my "it" may be. Same on the web. Tom |

Lo-Key,
Aaaargh! Don't make me feel any older than I am! I have a routine using Groucho Marx as the punch line that I have had to scrap because too few people remembered him (imagine the blank stares I got when I tried the routine with KARL Marx!) But I would have though T.S.'s poetry would be immortal. Oh well, maybe not. As the Native Americans say, "Only the mountains live forever." |

This old man, he had fun...
He discussed theater with Wes James in NYC today And left the city with a couple of great ideas for presentations and story both true and Lovecraftian. How was your day?

So do threads like this really improve any of our magic performances?

Dorian writes, "So do threads like this really improve any of our magic performances?"
Certainly! In this month's (November's) Linking Ring magazine, the late Gene Poinc points out the number of people who write in to a daily digest, if the popular thread slides over to anything other than a double lift, for example, and complain that the current topic has nothing to do with magic. Hey, EVERYTHING has to do with magic. And, if you can't get some ideas from things unrelated to magic, you just aren't trying. For example, Whit Haydn's quoting of Eliot could provide the whole basis -- and closing line -- of an entire routine with spring flowers, or the floating rose, or a napkin rose. (Just three ideas off the top of my head as I'm writing this.) So, yes, threads like this DO improve our magic. Besides, they're fun! (Does everything HAVE to be so bloody serious?) |

Good question, Dorian--maybe not. But there are plenty of threads here that do, or at least can, for the person who is willing to glean from them the underlying lessons.
Yes, there are topics that go around in circles or have been addressed before. And yes, sometimes folks get to griping at other people. We used to edit/delete such remarks in the interests of civility, but many started crying "Censorship! Good discussion means being abrasive sometimes!" So we modified the rules a bit, and now a lot of folks complain that The Café isn't "as nice" as it used to be. Interestingly, many of these people are the same ones who complained before about censorship, and they are the same ones who complain about others complaints, or whining! Not every post or every topic is going to have something for everybody. Tom made an excellent point--if you see a new topic asking about the best pass or cards, you don't have to read it. I know I don't, unless there is a problem that is brought to my attention in that topic. But do you realize how much it would cost for the vast amount of information from good to world-class magicians in the card forum alone, were it put into book form? Hundreds of dollars! But it's free for you to read and use as a resource at any time. Plus, it's interactive! If you have a question, you can post it or send a PM to the person. Just as one example, Paul Chosse is universally regarded as one of the best handful of card magicians in the world, and he posts here regularly, and you can ask him questions. Even 10 or 15 years ago, that would have been impossible for most of us. So yes, there is some whining and complaining about petty issues. But, no offense to anyone who posted here, I consider whining and complaining about people who whine and complain about petty issues to BE whining and complaining about petty issues! (Read that six times really fast, and it'll make sense--or not!) Seriously, though, on a site with nearly 400,000 posts, not all of them are going to be "gold." But it's there if you're willing to dig a bit. And sometimes, that question from a newbie that is so annoying will spark an incredible response later on in the topic. I for one am happy to put up with the former to reap the latter.

Firedice, we are what we make of ourselves. All I'm saying is that I am involved in enough "nerdy" activites that I'm tired of people who say, "oh I'm a nerd", "I have no life", "I wish I could find a chick", ect. I know you guys are mostly kidding, but that's all I'm saying. Also I really think that magic is one of the LEAST nerdy things I can think of. It's out going, extremly social, and cool to look at. That's all I'm saying. The life of the party is never nerdy. But hey, if being able to recite poems in elvish makes me nerdy....so be it!

Hopefully, if you care enough to argue about this stuff, in time you will figure out what is WORTH arguing about.
I see great hope for the future of magic when I see new people asking, arguing, and answering questions on issues related to magic. It doesn't matter that the issues are redundant, if you have already stated your views, don't participate! It really is that simple. And in the meantime, take satisfaction in knowing that there are people who care enough to bother asking, arguing, etc., instead of just acccepting whatever they are told, or taking whatever they want. Best, PSC P.S. I can't help but comment on the "underground magicians" label - remember, many of the people who are so labelled were not part of the labelling! I have been referred to as an "underground" guy many times. I don't know that there is an underground, and if there is one, I haven't recieved my membership card yet! I can't control others view of me when I don't even know those people, have never met them or corresponded with them. The whole labelling thing is akin to the throwing of mud on someone, just so you can call them dirty... Oh, yeah - I CAN palm cards 435 different ways - every one of them entertaining!

Though I must add that a lot of times things seem like serious bickering because we are dealing in written word, Many times my posts are taken other than intended. If you where sat in a room with me you would find that although I may have a different opinion on a topic (perhaps a strong one), I would not be the type of person you would fall out over it (as I often seem to be on this board). Truthfully, in real life most people comment on how easy going and easy to get along with I am. I think that this would be the same with many other posters too Phillip |
