Hmm..something very visual. "In A Flash" (Sankey) would be a nice one (no examination before). BRANDED or LIT might turn Letterman's face even more pale than it already is. So yes .. it seems as if Id like "fire" incorporated somehow becasue its tv. Watching the big burst of flames while the quarter melts through the cards and landing on their selected card is a favorite at every restaurant, bar and event I go to and brilliantly easy. Almost feel guilty performing it. To tell you the truth I don't know why I don't hear more about this one here on the Caf. I could walk in to any restaurant and show the mananger this one trick and I have contracts instantly. I also perform it the way where you place all the cards back in the pack, place the wrapped up quarter on top of the pack and light it.

All I'm saying is this: have a Plan B.

Not a bad idea to come in with loads of impromptu stuff in the back of your mind so you always have an out like "Deal or Duck poker" (Aldo On Trost), Back In Time (Sankey) OR a nice packet effect like Double Back. But yes .. I concur with the whole plan B thing! |

I know that I made an off handed joke earlier in this thread but I honestly have been thinking about it for a few days.
I'm not sure what effect(s) I would choose specifically. I am leaning towards something quick that involves a bit of humor and byplay AFTER the effect is over. That way the host can't try to break up your rhythm mid-effect and throw you off. Here it is, there it is, done. It's over before they know it started but are still hit with the effect. Now, we can chat. I'm thinking of strong opener type effects that you get done in under a minute or two and can tie together. If I wasn't to go that route I might want to do something skill based and be up front about it. A random example, "This is hand mucking/second dealing/etc." I think it eliminates a bit of the "trying to catch you" game since you are openly stating what will be done. Granted, they WILL be trying to catch you but the raw skill should defeat it. That's dangerous unless you are sure you can nail the moves. Personally, I would be afraid to go that way but I think it is an option if you have done your homework. Just my two cents, Justin |

Wow. Many good posts. I was hoping this would prompt some thought.
Here's mine before I'll disappear back into lurk mode for six months or so. It's the Letterman show. As noted before, do what he or his people say or you won't be invited back and probably won't get on at all. Also forget any idea of a "set." This isn't johnny Carson, who respected magicians. (No, I'm not a Letterman fan). You have one trick. Make it count. The gag idea is excellent. Michael Ammaar did that with his little arm coin trick. Laughs all around and Mike gets out with his rep intact. Not my style. I want Letterman weeping. Steven Youell makes an excellent point. You really, really, really, really need to know what card Letterman/difficult spectator chose. Peek, marked, cards, shiner. I don't are. When I was working restaurants, I used all three. At the same time. Get Youell's Weapons of Mass Destruction notes. He deals with this topic. Wish I had those notes when I started this insanity. BTW, I'm sure Ricky Jay knew what card Letterman chose. I'm sure he got the peek when during the cut to the band leader. And I also like the Lie Detector approach. At first I thought Twisting the Aces. Get Letterman out of the picture. Then I realized it's the Letterman show. He will put himself in the picture regardless. Best to put him into a controllable situation. That's it. Good thoughts for all. |

"I can't let you do that because I have the cards in a certain order." Then, after I spread the cards to show them in new deck order, I'd say, "Now you see why I didn't want you to shuffle. The cards are in what we call 'new deck' order"- Nice thinking!
IMHO, if you KNOW he would shuffle, then I'd ponder about doing a back in time either SANKEY or JAY method;however, why do cards? I'd perform my version of race TRACK improved. You have a cassette player. 4 wallets are on the table as well as an envelope from your friend. You empty out 14 billets with pictures of horses on them. You show the back have different names. This can be mixed.... You ask letterman to name either KENTUCKY DERBY, BELMONT STAKES, or PREAKNESS Your have him place any billet into ANY WALLET Suppose he states BELMONT STAKES You have him remove money from others and he removes a $5, $10, and $100... NOTHING ELSE is inside You then have him remove contents of wallet he chose a $20 plus a horse billet...name unknown...He turns it over..it is SUNSHINE GIRL! You open up the envelope.... You remove a folded slip of paper IT STATES....LETTERMAN WILL WAGER $20 ON THE WINNING HORSE OF THE BELMONT STAKES You play the recorder.....SUNSHINE GIRL WINS!!!!! Or you can have the prediction LETTERMAN WILL WAGER $20 ON THE WINNING HORSE on the back of a photo of a BELMONT STAKES ticket stub. Best, Jeff |

I'd have Letterman put on a blindfold hood, with a locking chain around the neck. Then I'd do a trick for Paul.

Signed card to sealed box if your goal is to impress an audience beyond almost any other effect, if your goal is to impress magicians just pick anything popular and do it well

Follow-up question:
Okay, you've planned what you're going to perform on Letterman. Great. Dave talks long during the interview, and suddenly instead of the planned 5 minutes to perform, you discover you only have 3 minutes allowed. (Or whatever your planned time was, suddenly cut it by 40%.) On the fly, can you successfully adjust your performance plan? Or do you crash and burn? Remember, regardless of the shortened time Letterman will still make himself the focus and mess with you. (Did you remember to build in time for that?) |

If, as a magician, it's all about me, why would I go on a show where I knew it would be all about him? If I was promoting my book, I would go on expecting to only talk about the book. If he wanted me to do a trick, or more than one, I would say, OK, look, give me a five minute performance slot where you aren't on the stage. You'd do that for Jay Z or Clay Aiken, or U2, right?

Where a popular musical act will bring ratings to a show, i.e. people may tune in just to see Clay Aiken (?) the same does not hold true for a magician (excluding the blaines, Copperfields, ect). Therefore, the magician has much more to gain then the program, hence the magician is at the discretion of the show...not the other way around. Magicians can be amazing, funny, entertainment....yet the general public does not (nor ever will) place "us" in the same realm of pop singers, actors, ect. This is "our" cross to bare....take it or leave it, either way the show is great exposure and much more benaficial to you then them...so play along and just have a way to get the last laugh. Billy |

In addition to getting Wayne Newton, Blue Man Group and other forms of entertainment associated with Vegas he also brought his partner Penn to the show. They did some magic and I forget who it was who said it but it was something along the lines of "There's something about magic that's so universally entertaining, unlike any other form of entertainment" and I agree. While flipping through channels will a magician like Criss Angel pulling a quarter out of his arm be more likely to catch someones attention or a band playing a song? I suppose it depends on the magician or the band but in essence I feel like people enjoy having their belief systems challenged just as much or more than listening/watching music. Just my opinion though. All I know is I cant wait for that new magic reality tv series to come on .. now that's going to be good tv and also represents how magic is still evolving in the eyes of the public: Angel/Blaine--->Hollywood--->Reality series---->whats next? |

The haircut, the clothes (all round fashion), the lingo (rap, etc). Magic has none of that really. It just encompasses pure entertainment. I can see where your coming from though. All I know is that I got in to magic because I liked to be fooled. My beliefs about gravity, the impossibility of transposing or turning objects into live animals challenged everything that Id learned up until then about life, physics, etc. Good roller coaster analogy although Theme parks and roller coasters do not challenge peoples belief systems, just gives them a rush of adrenaline. When somebody reads your mind, floats objects or anything else that goes against what youve learned since birth, I feel certain belief systems have been challenged. That being said, yes I agree that its a light entertainment. That's precisely why we continue to strive for more "UMPHH" in our effects to push the envelope everyday to get rid of that word "light" entertainment. No? When I saw Criss Angels Halloween special where he was put in a coffin and sent through a wood chipper with blood splattering everywhere and everybody gasping I must say .. I was frozen with all hairs standing up. Something a roller coaster never could have done. |
