I thought this would be a good place to post tips for late starts.
For example: I usually make balloon animals after the magic portion of the show BUT if the event is running late (other avtivities still ongoing or people arriving late) I offer to make the balloons first - while strolling. That way I'm there for the same amount of time and I can leave on schedule.

Curious-do you have them put balloons in the back of room before you start. I don't do balloons, but if someone else has made them, I make sure they don't sit down with, so there aren't any distractions with them. How bout you?

I always make the balloons as the kids come in, which breaks the ice nicely.
The kids put all their balloons back into my trunk, before I start the magic show. No question, balloons in kids' hands during the show are a big "no-no". My arrangements are very specific, and I start and finish exactly at the arranged times, with the exception of weddings, when I charge a premium because it's impossible to know precise timings for event like this. On occasion, I've been an hour or more behind schedule. There is no way you can mess around with the flow of a wedding - you just have to wait until the clients require you to perform. |

My preference is to make balloons after the show but if I have another party to go to then this is a work-a-round and "everyone is happy". For corporate shows Potty, I do stick to the schedule. I explain, when I start to set-up "I can start the show At Any Time...(at any time) but I must leave at X So if you want a ten minute show, I'll be happy to perform for that that much time" When they digest what you just said, they usually get-it-together. Usually, but not all the time. If they still indicate they WILL be running late, I ask for the check immediately then explain that I can fill some time by strolling. - It's the best way I can give them their hour but also meet my goals as well. When I have more then one show or other commitment then I've had 2 or 3 advance conversations where they know about my schedule. I also pre-blame possible late arrivals and possible late food service by reminding them I'm not starting at the very beginning of the event (on purpose) and if people are two hours late... then they're really late! And they'll just have to miss the show. All the bases are covered in advance. So, I believe, by offering balloon animals first OR strolling magic instead of the stand-up show the host knows I'm attempting to offer more then what was discussed and they can't blame me for other problems. Any other tips on what all of you do, if everything is behind schedule?

I do the same thing as Jay when I have to. But I prefer to do the balloons after the show. I seem to get better laughs from the magic show when I do balloons after - my schtick is still fresh for them, and the energy level is higher, and I have their attention better. Have you noticed that?

Yes... All H breaks loose when you make balloons at the end as opposed to an assembly line, at the beginning.
It's good that I use a PA in almost all venues.

I do the face paint first if the face paint and balloons are included with the magic show with a late start.

My balloons are pre-inflated, so I pretty much hand each kid a balloon model as they arrive. It only takes a few seconds to make swords, flowers, princess hats, etc. So, I don't ever have a line of kids waiting for a balloon model, at Birthday parties.

Jay,
I have some material that is exclusive to my show, so unfortunately I don't want to tip that information. However, what about some close-up magic? It's my opinion, this is what many performers use to kill time (I hate to use that word) while waiting for everyone to arrive. Gerry |

Charlie,
I've had several magicians and magic dealers approach me about buying these items. I'm just not ready to release these to the magic world as it helps separate my act from my competitors. That said, I did suggest Close-up magic. So, why not tell us what you do?. Thanks, Gerry |

Gerry, Sometimes the pizza is a half hour late but all the people are there so that's an example of when I make the balloon animals first and that way I can still exit in a timely fashion.
On another note, If there are more then 20 kids AND all the set-up is done early. then I'll inflate 15 balloons and park them behind me. If the schedule is "on" then the show is presented then the first 15 (or so) kids get a balloon from the un-inflated bag and that way I can do all the slapstick and silly gags up front... and by the 15th balloon, when everyone's ready to bust loose, that's when the back-up balloons are introduced. It makes for a fast finish and a clean get a way especially if you're deftly packing with one hand, between animals, and stuffing pizza and sodas in your pockets with the other

The things that works best for me is doing some close up magic. That’s why I always have my close up kit in the car. But what really peeves me is when I don’t get a tip for this! And for that reason I usually pull the, “I have another show right after this and cannot start the show any later than we agreed.” Half the time it’s true.

Guys, I'm in every invitation. I rarely start late ever. The invitation might read, 'Jimmy's party starts at, The Great Zucchini starts at 11 15-Its great, remind parents to do this on the phone, people will be on time, and keeps your brand in front of people when your name is mentioned in every
