This is my review of this effect, based on first impressions. I just got it yesterday
and havn't tried on someone yet, but I am familiar with the methology invovled and similiar effects done in the same way. "Hotel" - Ludovic Mignon what you get: a very nice illustrated booklet with 2 effects, explnations and some tips (no DVD). verious hotel's business cards. 1 hotel room key. quality: the instruction booklet is very good and well explained (not a low-res photo copy...). The business cards are very well made. They very in size and in stock (some are glossy some not), this makes them look super legit, no weird looking cards here... The hotel room key also looks very good. bottom line: you will not be questioned about the props. effect 1: You hand the spectator a stack of business cards from verious hotels,Than you ask them to go through the cards and pick one and take it. You are now able to name the hotel that was chosen. You also have the possibility to devise the hotel's street name. pros (effect 1): - very easy to do - excellent props - instant reset - examinable - no sleights - completly free choice, different outcome every time. - carry it everywhere cons (effect 1): - some memory work needed (not too hard for the basic presentation, but more complex if you want to devise the extra info) - cards should be handeld a certain way by spectator (you get two veriations though, one of which is in your hand) Some remarks: As for the chrome case metioned in "latest and greatest?", I don't see a real need for it.I suggest you first buy the effect and look at it, before you decide on buying the case. overall (effect 1) - very good effect, easy to do. Based on well known methology. No big suprises here, but a very well thought of effect with excellent props and presentation. Overall I give this 85%. effect 2 - you hand the spectator a stack of hotel's business cards, and ask him to go through them, face down and one by one till they decides to stop. You show the spectator's choice. Than you take out the prediction out of the envelope and show a room key that matches the name of the hotel randomly chosen. pros (effect 2): - easy to do - instant reset - no memory work - excellent props - no sleights - carry it everywhere cons (effect 2): - not examniable (i can't say too much without exposure, but trust me on that) - cards should be handled a certain way by spectator (but it makes sense so hardly a big minus) - same outcome each time overall (effect 2) - Like the first effect, no suprises here. Easy to do, utilising a well known methology.Very well thought off and very effectine IMO. This would be 85%. combining both effects - I think that this is where all the power of the "hotel" lies (i'm not sure my english is correcrt here...). These two effects fit each other perfectly. Effect 2 looks like the logical "one step further" next step for effect 1. One should be aware though, that combining the two effects involves another sort of "move" (difficult to explain without risk of exposure) that is very easy, and done on a complete "off beat", so it's not going to be a problem even for beginers. in a nutshell - "hotel" doesn't offer any new revolutionary or amazing methods and it doesn't hype itself as one that does (thank god, we have enough of those ;-)). What it is a very well thought of presentation, with great theme and excellent props. For me, as my proffesion involves trade shows, the theme makes perfect sense and is everything I look for in mentalism. I will rate both effect together as a routine at 95%, well done Mr. Ludovic Mignon! |

Can the business cards that come with this be replaced with others or are they gimmicked? If so, are replacements available ?

Thank you for the review! Without giving anything away, how convincing would you say the spectators choice (2nd effect) is? They'll feel it was completely free I hope?
When I saw the vid I assumed it was a c**ntd**n f**ce of some type, based on the s***k. This sounds way better. |

IMO, for laymen it would seem fair. There is, off course, the fact that the cards
are face down and can not be examined, just very casually before you hand them out. I would say that as a stand alone effect this would make the choice less fair, but as a follow up to the first phase (in which they can examine the cards), it will work great. I hope it makes sense to you... |

Nice and correct review! An issue is that the cards are quite sticky... I see difficulties when a spectator has to handle the cards... Jan

When the cards are new they don't slide very good. You need to use them a little and after that they slide very well !

BTW, you will probabley want to wear the cards a bit anyway, as you have got to be a bit of a weirdo to keep so many business cards in such a mint condition ;-) |

Thanks for the thorough review, drorwis!
I'm still on the fence with this one. Sounds nice and I'd rather use BC's instead of movie posters. :bat: |

I bought Hotel and my set has a problem. Does anyone know how to reach the maker of this effect, other than his email: ludo@esp-origins.com
This is the email on my PayPal receipt and on the Hotel web site. One card was missing from my Hotel set when I received it, and although I've emailed 4 or 5 times over the past week to request that the card be mailed to me, no response at all. Thanks for any help anyone can offer. Cheers, Jerry |

Great Feedback, thanks. I've got one question, when you're doing both effects together, you have to do a "deck switch" between effect no.1 and no.2, right?

Would putting fanning power on the cards help with the stickiness?
Since these cards are printed on business card stock and will wear with handling, it would be nice if replacement cards were available.

Very clever. Probably owes some inspiration credit to Andy Leviss' 'It's a match.' Which of course owes a nod to Larry Becker's 'Casino Royale' The two phases work nicely here, canceling out methods.
