I would like to make Aldo Columbini's Knotty Knot. What could I use to make the red section of the rope? I have tried a red permanent marker, but the results are less that expected. I know he has his rope available, but I do not like knitted rope. I don't like the way it handles.
Any suggestions on dyeing or coloring the red section of the rope? |

Despite my best efforts at partially dyeing a rope, I always have had some noticeable degree of bleeding. I think the best way in the long run is to either buy it commercially or to sew different colored ropes together. I believe that is what Aldo's rope is (also Pavel's.)

Hi Darkwing.
I recommend you just buy the special rope from Aldo or a dealer. It's really inexpensive. You can buy it postpaid from Denny and Lee for $20.00. Even cheaper, you can buy it from Hocus-Pocus, Elmwood Magic, or the Trickery when they have a 20-25% off special. (By the way, all of them have specials right now.) You will not be able to make the rope like Aldo uses. He does not glue pieces in like Pavel; he uses the same technique as Daryl uses for his new version of Jumping Knot of Pakistan. The color is woven into the rope. It's beautifully done and will last you forever. Plus, you'll be supporting Aldo. Ron |

Ron,
Thank you for your post, however, I thought I was clear about not liking the knitted or woven rope from Aldo. I have the Jumping Knots of Pakistan from Daryl and I do not like the feel or the look of the rope. The rope does not look like rope nor does it handle like rope. That is the reason why I was trying to make the effect myself. I have Aldo's video Classics of Magic, (which I did buy from him), which has Knotty Knots on it and the rope he uses on the video is not the same which he sells for the effect. I have a version of another rope trick that is similar to the Aldo version I bought from a dealer at a convention. It has a painted or marked red section that is very well done. The only problem with this rope is that it is too short. I was hoping someone might be able to give me some insight on another way of coloring the section of rope for the effect. I have spent a lot of time on this challenge. |

When I made this up I used a red Sharpie to colour the knot which worked well for me.

Meir Yedid, who sells the Knotty Knot for $20, used to sell a cheaper version (for $10 I recall), which used regular rope. Maybe contact him through his website and see if the cheaper versions are still available.
Similarly, as mentioned, the Daryl Jumping Knot of Pakistan originally came out with regular rope (the version I purchased), then later came out with the knitted ones. The knitted versions are nicer looking props for your audience to view, but I agree that regular rope handles better for the performer. |

I made this up with "RIT liquid dye" you can get this from Walmart for $2 for 8 oz. bottle. What you have to do is double the rope over so you have a small loop in the part you want to dye. And at the point where the loop meets (which will be the top and bottom cut off points for the dye),
you have to put some rubber bands around the rope make sure they are VERY tight. Then dip just a small bit of the rope in the dye. About 1/4 of the loop, the rest should bleed up to the bands. If not then lower the rope a little at a time until it does. Also, because the water and dye have to be HOT and you have to leave it in a while for darker color, I tied the rest of the rope around a coat hanger. Also test how deep the rope will be in the water BEFORE adding the dye. Then just set the hanger across the pan of dye and just 1/4 of the loop will be in the dye and you should be set. Now with that said, after a while you will have to do it again because it fades. So I ended up buying the rope from Aldo. Anyway hope this helps Best Joe

Hi Darkwing:
Sorry, I didn't read your post all the way, I guess. Okay, here's another suggestion if you want the rope to look VERY good. It will probably cost you a bit. Have Pavel custom make it for you - he does do custom work. I have emailed him recently about doing some work for me, and he does do it, for a price. Here's his email address: pavelmagic@geneva-link.ch Hope this helps; Pavel makes beautiful gimmicked rope. Ron |

I originally purchased the Yedid model, it looks to me like he just painted it. If you tape off the rope with masking tape, hang it up suspended. Spray paint it with a can of paint. The paint is thick enough it will not bleed. Use light coats and let dry between coats.
By the way I paid $20 for the pre-knitted model. I agree the knitted material is not my "cup of tea" either. Bill |

You might try using automotive upholstery spray paint. This is a dye paint as opposed to a pigment paint. It's about $4-5 a can at Pep Boys, and may well leave your rope in better shape than using pigments. If it works for you color-wise, it might be easier than the dyeing process.

I have played around with various ways of doing this - including knitting my own rope. For Darkwing's problem, I would say that the best way to make your own Knotty Knot rope is to get fabric paint (not dye). You can find it in art shops where they sell it so that you can paint your own T-shirts.
Paint it on, iron the rope (to fix the paint) and then wash the rope. If you don't wash the rope, the painted area will be quite stiff. Both the sharpie approach and the dipping in dye will work, but they each have their own respective advantages and disadvantages. However, don't give up on the knitted rope. I occasionally use a knitted rope and there is something to be said for the spectator being able to examine the rope and see that the knot is a different material, not just a painted area on a white rope. Bye for now Harold (the kind

Hello:
I have ordered a custom-made rope from Pavel. I will give a review of it as soon as I get it, but I'm sure it will be outstanding. Everything Pavel makes is just beautiful. Not a bad price either; he's charging me $28.00 for the rope (postage included). Ron UPDATE: March 13, 2004 Today, I received my custom-made Knotty Knot rope from Pavel, and it is a thing of beauty. I don't know how he does it, but Pavel gets it to look PERFECT. He doesn't glue the red piece in - he uses some type of weaving process to insert the red section of rope. I would not be able to this in a thousand years! He uses the same type of rope that he uses for all his other effects. Again, he charged me $20.00 plus $8.00 postage. It arrived in Arizona in four days - not too bad. One thing to note is Pavel's "white" rope is not really white - it's off-white like standard magician's rope. Ron |

Elmwood is advertising a newer version of the Knotty Knot with the rope being made better. Does anyone have any info on this (having owned both or compared the older with the newer)?
Thanks! Wayne

Hi Wayne:
Yes, the newer version is the woven style made out of yarn-like material. It's pretty good, but I don't like it because it stretches; that's why I had Pavel make me a set from his thick, braided rope. I really think it's the way to go. Ron |

Thanks Ron. I've seen (possibly) the older version for sale used.
Wayne Need some help. I've only performed Knotty on my family and a few at work The second half of effect (moving the red knot) is where I don't feel like Im getting a good reaction. They see right through it. Perhaps I am not doing it fast enough, slow enough etc. Probably its the performer but does anyone skip this part of the routine? Thanks! Wayne "slow enough etc" That is the speed I have been doing it (SLOW)....perhaps it is to be done as one fluid movement, fast nonstop? Well did it fast and still got busted. I see in the pamphlet, Aldo uses the the single handed knot and skips this part with red turning into white again. I will continue to practice this part
