Hi Josh!
Have you ever worked restaurants? In New York City, with all those restaurants and tourists, are there any that feature a Magician? |

Hi there,
So, when I first moved to NYC seven years ago the first thing I did was get a restaurant job (I had worked at three while in Ohio, but that was years before). I worked at an "Asian Fusion" restaurant--upscale but cool, and in the flatiron district. It was great in many ways, because I didn't have a lot of work in the city at the time, and it was a forum for me to work in front of people who might later book me. The problem I ran into (and it was a good problem) was that the restaurant only wanted me on weekends, and as I started to do more shows, it was constantly conflicting and getting in the way of where I wanted to be. That was the end of it. But it was a very positive experience for me. As for other magicians, there are a few talented guys who help out at Tannens and then perform at a quirky, fun place called NINJA, but I have yet to see them there. Josh |

Hi Joshua,
Sir, do you remember and would it be okay to share with us: #1 the very first magic trick you remember seeing? #2 the first magic trick you did for your mom? #3 the first illusion you performed for a girlfriend? #4 the first time you felt in your heart: "I want this to be my career?" #5 your favorite illusion as a child? #6 your favorite legendary magician? #7 the first time someone called you a magician? Thanks Josh, I'm not sure if we were allowed to ask this many questions and I kind of tried not to read any rules about that sort of thing so I could ask them in good conscience. |

I know this has been covered by many magicians, but I'd like to see how you and Andi did it.
What were usually in your pockets when you went off to a gig or did your restaurant magic? What effects did you find work in the walkabout situations? Tips on pocket management? |

Here we go!
1. The first trick I ever experienced was Out of This World. My dad did it for me, and from the second he did it for me, I was hooked. 2. That I can't recall, but I can say that I did more bad magic tricks on my poor mom than anyone deserves, and she was always patient with me. 3. I don't remember the first, but the best is, without doubt, Houchin's French Kiss. ANYONE can pick up a woman with that trick. 4. Great question! It was so early on that I don't remember, but the important thing for me is that I discovered my "purpose" so early on that I don't even remember what it feels like to feel otherwise. I always just knew I would be a magician, and that took a lot of the anxiety and fear that many people experience in their twenties away for me. 5. My favorite illusion on stage was Copperfield's The Fan. It was a classic 90s moment, and him at his best, as I remember. As for favorite tricks to perform as a kid, I have been doing Ambitious Card since I was nine (different versions, obviously), and I do a certain Karl Fulves/Hofzinser Ace Problem effect that I learned when I was ten. And to this day I do it often, and I do it almost the same way. 6. I have many favorites, and they're the usual suspects. But the guy I'm thinking about most these days is Tommy Wonder. I knew him a bit, and I miss him terribly, and as I've been rereading him a lot since Magic in Mind, I just find it devastating that he's not here any longer to push the art forward. 7. I did my first show for a neighbor kid when I was 8. I charged 20 dollars. Afterward my dad said to me in a patronizing way, "Wow, 20 dollars for one magic show? You're rich!" I looked at him and replied, dead serious, "No, I'm not rich, but I'm making a living." That line--of an 8 year old talking like a fifty-year-old, has become legend in the Jay family. |

In answer to your other question, pocket management is something I've gotten much better at, but it's still a struggle. It's a struggle for me because I don't like the idea of carrying a case around all night. I bring it to the event and then load up my pockets. BUT, I really enjoy keeping a lot of stuff on me. Some guys prefer to do the same three or four tricks all night, but I just genuinely have more fun when I can circulate more magic around as I'm strolling, and that does take up more pocket space.
After a few years away from it, I'm also back to chop cup again, and that presents its own hassle since the loads look goofy in a fitted suit and there's nowhere to put the cup. So, I usually just approach with the bag in hand, set it down, and perform it as my closer. Josh |

I too have become more and more impressed with Tommy Wonder as time goes on. A very nice exchange going on here.
