This is really sad, especially as it's the second time now; so can only be nothing other than blatant piracy.
I too hope others will follow by not supporting this so called "creator" (if one can describe him as that) Thanks Mach |

This seems sadly indicative of what has been happening in the mentalism world over the last decade. I took some time away from the art form in 2006 and have been saddened by what I have seen on my return.
Items like Omnipad and Ghost Pad are released on a frequent basis without initial consultation with and permission from the creator of a method/product. It seems anything goes these days and manufacturers can hide behind a " it is in the public domain and we have created an advanced/modified version" excuse. Such a pity. |

Where did he go???? I see Elwood and other places have stopped selling this.... Interesting. But most interesting is how this guy thought trying to do the same thing again would work.... Now that is amazing.

The problem is, if Murphy's doesn't take it off the market it will still get sold over the counter to many young blokes who have never heard of Rigg's and think this is a new concept. Owning many Rigg's products, I know it will not be anything close to the same quality. Jon's stuff is top shelf. But being a performer, manufacturing is a side line income for him, albeit an important one. I sincerely hope they (Murphy Magic) see their role and importance to the industry and pull this.

Hello, gentlemen. This is my first visit to the Café since the OmniPad was released and I see you've been having fun as you jump to misinformed conclusions. For the record, my Stealthboard Reloaded impression clipboard continues to be a steady seller with seasoned pros and younger performers because it works extremely well. Period. Since the comments above appear to be coming from posters who don't own a Stealthboard Reloaded, let me clarify: My approach is different from John Riggs' offerings - it uses a neon vinyl impression material, which means no wax, it can be cleaned, and it is super visible, even in low light. This material sits inside a super thin synthetic paper "sandwich" which can be placed on a see-through acrylic clipboard or a traditional masonite model and used for either immediate peeks or easily switched to the "locked" position and used without worry for pre-show work. The gimmicks are all hand made by me. I am a professional designer and a perfectionist, so the quality is extremely high. I have received many thank yous from Stealthboard Reloaded purchasers for the product's reliability and quality. Many of my clients tell me that they have also bought John's products and prefer mine. John makes a fine product. So do I. So do many others. To John's son I can say that I too have multiple degrees. I was also a tenured professor. I have run two small businesses. Currently I perform professionally throughout the US. I am a speaker and trainer who uses magic and mentalism as metaphors for helping business owners and employees open their minds to new ways of thinking. I've performed magic professionally part time for more than 35 years. I'm also not a thief. I developed the original Stealthboards independently of John's work and used my version for many years before offering it to the market. Yes, the first version used magnetic vinyl and a traditional "magic slate" material, but the inspiration for my impression board came from Ted Annemann and Robert Nelson, not John Riggs. When John cried foul I respected his creation and took mine off the market until I could refine and improve upon the method, which is now the Stealthboard Reloaded. I've road tested this product for more than two years before placing it on the market. As you all know, there are many impression devices out there. I believe mine offers a clarity of impression and flexibility of use that others may not. Many purchasers feel the same way. As for the OmniPad, this came about as a logical evolution of my original Stealthpad and I created it to meet my specific performing needs. Others liked the idea and asked if I might produce it for sale. I'm sure Mr. Riggs would agree that some of his products were developed the same way. It's a natural progression. If I am guilty of anything it is not checking John's website before the OmniPad was released to see if he had any similar products out there. But my dealings with John over my original products was so unpleasant that I vowed that I would never visit his site again. And I didn't until last week. I developed the OmniPad on my own and am proud of the method and craftsmanship. The idea for a switch pad came from my playing around with using a paperback book as an ungimmicked switching device and it evolved from there. I understand that Banachek recently released a switching notepad, so I'm curious if he received John's blessing before putting it on the market. Or did Banacheck have the idea first and John developed his combo impression/switch pad independently? In any event, last week John sent me a nasty, threatening email and was incensed when I wouldn't wallow in the mud with him. He accused me of "taking the high road". This is the only road I will ever take. To John and to all of you I wish the best in life, especially good health, a family that loves you, and much success. I am blessed with all three, plus a clear conscience. If you choose not to purchase any of my products, either past or future, I respect that, as I respect those who have sent me encouraging emails and eagerly await my next offering. To Dr. Spektor I say don't bother trying to goad me. I won't dignify your posts unless they are informed, balanced and respectful. The Café would benefit from more civil conversations and less invective.

Hi Perceptionist,
I actually feel you have been disproportionately attacked on these boards. And I apologise if my slightly weary post earlier in any way added to that. It does seem rather unfair that you have had to ride a massive wave of criticism while other manufacturers are given something of a free pass. I don't know the ins and outs of the provenance of your product but you have certainly outlined a compelling case for independent creation in your last post. I hope anyone criticising you, and people should always be free to criticise, will do so from a factual as opposed to emotional standpoint. Best wishes, Martin. |

Now that there has been an intelligent reply from Perceptionist I guess without further info I'm not about to call him a liar and accepting his response, I apologize for any preconceived opinion without the full facts. The truth of the matter is that I don't know all the facts to take a side and am in no position to argue with either men. I just hope it's resolved amicably between the 2 parties.

Goad you? Heck, you came on here and then when the issue was raised you hid for a while. I call bullcrap.
John Riggs is well known in the community, is considered honest, has always been transparent, helps others and lets people run with his ideas with his blessings (when asked!)... one of the greats and innovators in the field hailed by many full time mentalists. You? For someone with the background you state you have, you have proceeded in a way that would have natural consequences of what is happening now... and act surprised? As for other manufactures etc. the focus of this discussion is Riggs and "The Perceptionists" devices. Wether or not others steal and rip off is another topic and has nothing to do with this. Me goad? Ha! This is me being kind and cutting you an iota of room to give an explanation. In short, you say your original device you created and didn't realize Riggs had one similar if not identical because you didn't check is website. Sorry - that still puts you in the wrong once it was found out either way - and you didn't take it off the market right away until the word got out and places refused to sell them. A switching device etc. like the nematode is unique for many reasons as I own both Banachek's and Rigg's and a bunch of others - I won't explain it here as this is an open forum - but the methpd and style of the device was first to market.... ask the big guns here and ignore me if you like - so your arguments that a switching device existed in the past does not mean all switching devices are now open source / royalty free whatever you are driving at. You are a professor? Big deal. So am I and I have a many degrees and so on - but you already dismissed me - as in the end, its the actions that count... you got a track record already. So do I... but not as someone who has ever ripped off anyone... as an academic we are into crediting... clear credits... etc. no plagerizing etc. As for an independent creation case - again in the real world, first to market etc. could sue - but in the realm of magic, its too much of a cost and that we rely on ethics. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU CREATE IT INDY IF IT ALREADY EXISTS IN THE MARKET... The fact you already been this route with Riggs before and NOW release a device so *** similar to his without even bothering to deal with what anyone with a ganglion would have seen coming with private emails etc. with him and you - sheesh. Sorry if you don't like reading posts like this - then don't bother coming here... you certainly appeared quickly for praise tho' The intelligent argument then is "I made something like riggs once and he got angry at me - so I decided not to talk to him anymore. I changed the material in the imp device so now its not wax (even though everything else is pretty much based on the original design) that I say its nothing to do with riggs. Now, because switching devices built into a similar device like Riggs I just made indy because there are so many out there, it is irrelevant that the Nematode existed before my creation and I didn't talk to riggs first this time because last time he got angry with me." Anyway, God bless you and your family and may you have a happy life. Sorry I am so horrible a poster and such a monster... ignore me! Ignore me! Besides, this post is not for you anyway - its for anyone reading this who might actually not stop and reflect on what you posted and do the history and math.

Right, I recently flogged off some unused items and have spare paypal cash...so this morning, I bought a small omnipad (i told john I'd be doing this)...
I have several of john riggs' devices in many shapes and forms - so please let it be known that I will offer a fair review/comparison...and also be fair warned that if this is a blatant copy not only will I broadcast this everywhere possible, I will be emailing all the major dealers and copying in my review and other evidence...that said, if its not - then I will say so too...it WILL be fair and even handed... I would also like it be known that when you buy something from john, paypal tells you the name of the purchaser, so if someone HAD say, bought imp devices from john, then he'll have proof of certain people purchasing said devices from him before any inventions took place... so a review will be happening at the weekend...the product shall be with me tomorrow...

Iain,
Thank you for your post. I look forward to your review, as I was unfamiliar with John's "Nematode" and am curious as to how similar it is to the OmniPad. Your comment about paypal is interesting. I have never maintained that I was unaware of John's products when I released the Stealth series, but rather that the Stealthpad and Stealthboard were developed independently by me in 2001 and used in my performances for roughly ten years. At the time I created these two items for my own use I was NOT aware of John or his products. There is one very important observation that seems to have been overlooked by everyone. John's products are a clever recombination of traditional wax-based magic slate and magnetic vinyl covered with printable paper. Both of these items have been commercial available for many years. You can purchase them in stores like Staples and Toys R Us. As a graphic designer I have had access to these and many other materials, such as synthetic paper, for years, so I built prototypes, tested them in my shows, and refined. I would be surprised if John did not go through a similar process. John maintains that his "technology" (a combination of two commercially available items) is unique and proprietary. I don't see how that could be true, and If it were, he should have applied for a patent. Iain, if you'd like more context for your review, below is my original post from the release of the new Stealthboard Reloaded in 2012. There have been and will continue to be many ways to collect an impression and I do consider my products to be a viable alternative to other devices. John appears to believe that I singled out his products with the intention of copying them. Nothing could be further from the truth, regardless of their similarities. Just yesterday I received an email from a supporter that reminded me that Lee Earles' impression pad from the 70s/80s (someone please clarify the years of origin) used a printed wood grained contact paper, a form of vinyl covering, which was placed over a clipboard with a piece of carbon paper inside. You peeled back the cover to reveal the impression left inside. This sounds like a very similar approach to John's, only using different materials. Was Mr. Earle's device created before or after John's? Was there a backlash from the mentalism community singling out one or both men as thieves? I am being accused of stealing someone else's idea, which is untrue, yet adaptations and refinements to existing ideas happen all the time, not only in the airtight bubble of the "mentalism community", but in magic, in music, in art, in nearly all creative endeavors. This orchestrated attempt to discredit me and my products smacks of a "mentalism monopoly", where only certain people can claim originality or offer improvements to others' ideas. It makes me wonder what the real issue is. Are certain people afraid that others will purchase competing products and discover that they prefer them? I say let the market decide. There are several pros whom I've spoken with, one of whom is extremely successful, well known and highly regarded, who owns several of my products as well as Riggs' and those of many other creators. He wrote me to say that he considers mine to be very different and a positive contribution to the marketplace. Thank you, Iain, for offering to compare products and judge them on their own merits. If you feel that they are similar, then by all means say so, but know that any similarities are unintentional and the result of my own development, use in performance, and personal refinement. My first undergraduate degree was in journalism and the first thing I learned is that "there are two sides to every story" and to "triple confirm all your facts before publishing." I'm confident you will do the same as you craft your review. Cheers. PS - Iain, at some point you may want to also compare and review the Stealthboard Reloaded with John's offerings. I think you'll find them to be significantly different. Original post for Stealthboard Reloaded: Posted: Oct 1, 2012 11:14am I'd like to clarify why I am offering the Stealthboard Reloaded. The new gimmick uses entirely different materials. It is considerably thinner, lighter, sturdier and more sensitive than my original Stealthboard or even the John Riggs items I own. I have road tested the new board in more than 200 performances over the past two years and it works very well for me. The impression is also easy to see in low light situations, which is a plus when working cabaret or restaurants. It is true that the original Stealthboard (which I created independently of John Riggs' fine work) was very similar in the materials and method to his, which is why I agreed to include John's name in the original product. When I created the original Stealthboard around 2001 I was not familiar with John's work and I regret the oversight. Stealthboard Reloaded is a new approach and I am proud to put my name on it and offer the product to magicians and mentalists. It does not require chemicals, powders, a magnetic stylus, magnetic vinyl, wax impression board, carbon paper or electronics. It's clean, direct and reliable, which is what I expect of all my props, as I'm sure you do. I believe it is an added plus that the board can be easily converted to either a peek or a locked version, depending on whether you're doing pre-show work or need to access the information in real time and with no cover. The working pros I've shared the board with appreciate that flexibility. Kudos to John Riggs for all the excellent products he has produced and I wish him well. I hope you will extend me and my products the same courtesy. I have been a professional performer for 35+ years and I respect all branches of the magical arts. In my humble opinion, the Stealthboard Reloaded is a contribution to our art and I hope you will judge it on its own merits. Thank you.

John is a technical engineer so the methods/techniques/work involved is going to be to a very very precise and high standard. The difference between off the peg and bespoke...
By the way Mark, have you ever bought a riggs product or handled one?

John's products are good quality. My point was that he did not invent wax-based magic slates or magnetic vinyl, but rather combined them in an interesting way. I don't know if I would call John's products precise. They are clearly hand made, which is fine, and they function reasonably well.
My products are also hand crafted and well made. I am a professional graphic designer, so my hand skills are solid. I'm sure there are many other creators' products on the market that are equally well crafted. Yes, I have purchased two of John's products, Iain, which I mentioned in the 2012 Stealthboard Reloaded post attached above. I have purchased impression devices from other creators as well. I was not that pleased with the quality of the impression I received with John's products or their lack of flexibility for my needs, so I continued to use my existing clipboards and impression pads and bought other creator's offerings as well.
