Thanks! I went to the site and read his article. Interesting stuff. I clicked on the sign me up button at the bottom, but I haven't gotten anything yet. O well.

Hi Ty,
I just spent some time reading through this thread, and there has been a lot of good advice already given. I have received a WEALTH of information from the experienced people here at the Café, and cannot thank them enough for it. The one thing I noticed was that most of the people giving you advice here are veteran magicians whom have been professionals for a long, long time. They have also told you what they charged when they were 14 or 15, but that may have been 20 or some years ago. Since they have given you most of the information you need for modern marketing, routining, and getting those shows. I just thought I would add in a few thoughts (being a 15-year-old magician myself). First off, I know this is beginning to sound like a broken record, but you should charge more. Even though I am not feeding a wife and kids with the money I make from magic, I still need to become a FAIR competitor in the magic market. I think it is not fair to the full time working professionals if you do shows for a fraction of the cost of theirs. This is my personal opinion, so that is one reason I do not charge a very, very small fee. Next, let's take this into consideration: What if you market yourself very good, and end up dominating the market because of your extremely low price? I know this may mean more money for you, but I have an opinion on this as well. I personally would NEVER want to do this because I do not think I have the best magic show in town. I would love to have a few shows a month, but I still think the BEST show should get the most bookings. I also am friends with a few older/professional magicians in town and know how many betters their show is than mine (since they HAVE had 30 years more experience than me, etc). I also would never want to really steal good business from friends. If I get a show I am unable to do for whatever reason, I recommend the client to hire them. All in all for my opinions above, you should raise your price for the sake of other people and keeping the magic alive in your town! Another reason to raise your price is that I think you are actually LOSING business when you charge so little. Another consideration: Let’s say you are planning a birthday party for your son, and want it to be the BEST party ever! When you go to look for entertainment (let's say your son wants a good magician for the party), who do you think you would hire? Magician number 1: 30 minute show that costs $25, or Magician number 2: 30 minute show that costs $100. Unfortunately, if the parent wants the best entertainment they are going to go with number 2. This is because you need to price your show by WHAT IT IS WORTH. This way, if you have a good show they will still be fine paying whatever your price is. You never know, you may have a BETTER show than the veteran magicians in your town:)! I also will give you some information about me personally being a young teenage magician as well. I did my first paid show about a year ago, and I charged $75 for it. The person who hired me GLADLY gave me $100 after the show was over. I did feel a little guilty at first, but then after a number of parents and children came up to me and told me how much they loved the show, it made me feel okay about it. I continued to charge $75 for my 30-minute kid show, and I kept receiving $100+ payment for the same show. I think my show is worth around $75 compared to the others in town, but I guess the clients think it is worth $100. I recently started charging $100 for a show, and I still have received the same positive comments from everyone in the audience (and client). One last bit of advice, you may want to restructure your show a little bit to make it more "child oriented.” The very first show I did consisted of tricks like stratosphere, vanishing bandanna, confusing crayons, my change bag and Scooby Doo underwear routine, etc. Although these did cost me money, there are a number of great children effects that will cost you VERY little money. One example was in an issue of MAGIC a few months back, in Silly Billy’s column. It is a very good routine, which gets across the message “Don’t do drugs.” You can also customize it a number of ways. To make this effect, it would cost you roughly $0.25 cents for tape, paper, and computer ink. I do not remember the month of the issue off hand, but you should look into it. This is just one example of a more “child oriented” routine, which will also fill 6-7 minutes of your show. Concerning tricks and routines, in time when the money starts rolling and you can afford to buy kid show effects, you may want to get rid of certain effects. Card tricks and some other close-up magic do not seem to play the best for children, but who knows maybe your routine is killer! Just one more thing to think about. All in all, I hope this was of help to you. It is just my opinion and also I am confident that you will become a very successful professional magician someday. Regards, and the best of luck to you in the future, Evan |

Hi,
I'm 14 and I've never done a show yet and I'm kind of afraid that if I do ever get to do a show then I'll end up mucking it up. Does anyone have any advice on how to get my first show? I've only been into magic for about 6 months. Do you think I am ready to do a show or not? |

No, Ollie, you're not.
This is not meant to slam you, but if you're going to start doing a show for people, especially one where they pay you, you need more time to learn the basics of magic and learn what works for you, and to develop a flow that will play in public. Try this as a starter: perform for free for residents at a home, or at a hospital. See how it goes. You're donating your time, so expectations can be far less than if you were taking a paying gig. And critique yourself afterwards. Be merciless on yourself. How did you feel doing it? Were your audiences amazed? Shocked? Bored? Learn from your own self-critique, and then have others critique, and have them be as merciless as you were on yourself. Learn from them, and hone your program and your skills accordingly. Ollie, you're not ready, and if you try to rush into it, you may do yourself more harm than good. Please take the time to do it right.
Cheers,

I'll have to a gree with Steve. It took me at least six months to get my show down pat, including costume, patter, and the workings of tricks AFTER I was "into" magic for about 3 years. Keep checking around the site though, because this place has some amazing advice, and eventually you'll be ready to do some amazing shows. Also, get many videos and books on magic, watch magic as much as you can, and talk to other magicians!
Once you think and KNOW your ready, email me of PM me about starting. Good luck Ollie I'd just like to add a quick thanks to all of the members here that have helped me out. Buisness is booming, and I owe it to much of the great advice. You've helped me out a lot, and I hope you'll continue to do so. Thanks MagicTy

I have been very fortunate in the upbringing in magic I have had. I have lived in a pub ever since I was born
Because of this, I would recomend you start performing in the most public places you can. This doesn't mean for big audiences. If you go to the local mall and grab a couple of people, then this will get your confidence up. You can then draw larger crowds, but the problem comes whern you run out of material! Restaurants are also a good starting place. But any public place worked for me when I was your age. |

You might think about getting those shirts that say something like.
Keep staring and I might do a trick for you. Or perhaps customizing them for your own use. I have been using embroidery on hats. Perhaps I will also order shirts in the future. Having a program before advertising is crucial. When I was new, I booked shows that were out of my league. What I knew at six months was interesting to look back at 3 years. In forty years I may look back at and smile at my ideas I hold today. Of course I am not young enough to think I know everything. In fact the more I am into magic the less I know. Be safe and creative. Harris

Some good advice here, Ty. Very good advice. Now, just to give you an example of how someone else did it...
Back when I was your age (some thirty-five years ago, yikes!), I decided one fine afternoon that I was going to do a whole bunch of Christmas shows for churches that year. So I pulled out the phone book and our phone, sat on my bed, and went right down the list. Took several afternoons, but I must have called every church in San Francisco. I got some bookings and had a lot of rejections, but it gave me the chance to talk with a lot of different people, listen to their responses, and change my pitch as I went. This was long before we all got sick of telemarketers, so it may not work today, but I basically just took the rabbit by the nape of the neck (never by the ears!) and went to look for my customers. Good luck to you. Keep working at it and keep us posted!

Its been a very very long time since of been on the site. My mother passed away about 4 months ago, and I pretty much stopped magic. Didn't get any shows since then either, but I've decided that I think I'll be able to start again. My mother was somebody that helped me so much. Now that she's gone its hard, but I'll do it. I was just at summer camp, and I had a blast. Of course, I did my magic, and blew everyone away. Magic will never leave me, so I'm gonna get into it just as much as I was before my mother died. I joined the IMB (woohoo) and enjoying it. I just need to start up MagicTy again, and hopefully nothing serious will get in the way again.
