I have 40+ years of experience performing magic. I started out doing nothing but childrens parties, but spent the past 20 years doing magic combined with music and dance activities for bar/batmitzvahs (12-13 yr olds) along with many private gigs just because it was significantly more lucrative. But now that I've settled down and have my own kids, I really want to get back into my true love of working with kids.
This leads up to my 2 questions: 1) How do you determine a fair price for your services, and what tends to be the going rate range nowadays for private versus public parties? I realize that this answer depends on your market and what sets you apart, which is why I'm shooting for averages to guage how much people are usually willing to spend for a unique act. I can easily keep young kids engaged for up to 2 hours by combining magic with music, games and dance contests & activities. This alone lends itself to something more unique than the traditional 30-60min performance. 2) What forms of advertising have worked most effectively and least effectively for those of you out there that haven't already established a name for yourself in your market through branding and/or word-of-mouth referrals? There are clearly no right or wrong answers here, and I already have my own thoughts on this subject. But I would still value everyones input! - Gary |

1. Trial and error. It's usually less of a mistake to guess too high. If you try charging $300 a show but only convert 20% of calls, you're ahead of the guy charging $150 and converting 35%.
2. Google AdWords is all you really need. Create a targeted campaign for your region. You only pay for clicks to your website, which should be designed to funnel clients to give you a call. |
