I am a self taught juggler and I am currently fairly skilled at juggling 3(juggling objects of different sizes or weights, juggling while walking around or up and down stairs, etc.). But I was wondering, how do I transition from juggling 3 to juggling 4? I have seen different methods of juggling 4 such as the movements of juggling 2 but with 2 objects in the air at all times, or a modified version of juggling 3 with the extra one thrown into the mix. Which method would be the best to start out with? Any and all suggestions are appreciated. -Roy

Hi Roy
There are two basic four ball patterns. One is synchronized, and the other is syncopated. There is also the half shower, the full shower, and I have even seen the four ball Mills mess pattern. What you are talking about are the first two patterns. Before you can try either one of those patterns you must become extremely good doing two balls with either hand. Now that you can do two balls with either hand go back and get even stronger with your left hand. After that all you gotta do is practice 4 balls about ten minutes every day for a couple months. When you can do four ball while telling jokes, and checking out the chicks you will then be good enough to call yourself a four ball juggler.

Good luck

Thanks for the info Al. I am really good at juggling 2 in 1 hand, and I have started to practice the synchronized pattern, but lately I've been working a little more on card and sponge magic than juggling. I'll figure it out eventually. Thanks, Roy.

I don't like 4 ball synchronised. I think it looks much better when 4 is juggled throwing one at a time. The same with 6 or any even number. It looks like juggling, if that makes sense. My favourite 4 ball pattern though is the shower. I think it just looks beautiful when juggled well.

Juggling "collums" with 3 balls is also a good (pre)exircise for 4 ball juggling.

I was given a tip years ago...practice your 4 ball pattern with an open door between your hands.

The secret to four balls is getting your non dominant hand up to speed.

The open door idea sounds good to me. It will sure keeps you from moving around a lot.

Another vote for learning the syncopated pattern first; when first learning 4 I found it MUCH easier to alternate my hands up & down (a similar feeling to the standard 3 ball cascade) than to try to keep both hand syncronized, and I think it looks better too.

Since this thread got resurrected here is a nice way to move from async to sync with 4 balls. Start in the async pattern...catch 2 balls in one hand...throw the next ball from your other hand across your body to the opposite hand...multiplex the 2 you are holding up the middle...and now you should be juggling in the sync pattern. Easier to do than describe. In case you do not know multiplexing is throwing 2 (or more balls) out of the same hand at the same time.
