Patter- you're on your own. For new ideas, check out my Kid Show Magic version on The Magic Nook. I show how to make your own vanishing crayons, your own color changing scarf or book bag, multiplying crayons and reappearing crayons. At the end, you give your helper the book (all the colors removed) and the box of crayons to take home. I prefer the color changing book bag, because it makes sense to take the book out of the plain black bag (shown inside and out) and then use the bag to catch the colors the kids toss at it. Instead of a rainbow, the bag is covered with kids handprints, each one a different color. If you want classy- go with the rainbow streamer, but if you want funny, try the hands on the bag.
Giving away the black and white line drawing book at the end shuts up the kids who think they know how it's done. I just buy quantities of duplicate coloring books from the Dollar Store or Oriental Trading Company.

Ah the coloring book....one of the great mainstays of the kidshow!
Firstoff, try to find one of the 6-way colbooks...with scribbles, wrong-colors, and words opposite the pictures. It's also not that hard to make one if there are no 6-ways available. This will more than double your routine. Before going into the colbook, I do a number of effects involving the kid's throwing colors, like the chameleon-streamer, SEO's silk-in-glass, and a change bag filled to overflowing with various colored silks....kinda like the misers dream effect only with silks. These prime the kids pretty good for the colbook routine, which I end with the kids trying one last time to throw the colors, missing, and ending up in my mouth via a rainbow coil.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

Making of the coloring is like of the bad chat-up line. Is OK, if the making is to young one, who has never known before. Other ways, always to make this a bad choice for savvy. Keep always off-color, no making big of little thing, every player knows.
Make big of little thing, is always to disappoint. Magic tool coloring, not so big. Hard magic, better, slit with hand is good. Better to seeing the wide eyes, when large is shown. Gasps and amaze at such, make impressive with good hard tool, much working with slit, using hand and fingers. |

I´m lost on this last one... reads like a Zen Koan. Lost in translation?
David Kaye´s approach to the coloring book is what made me buy one. It´s been in my kidshow ever since. |

Bowers, if you do educational shows with a reading or literacy theme, I have the perfect patter for the Magic Coloring Book. That, plus the original music I wrote for the routine, turns this prop into a miracle. (Yes, we're talking about the lowly Coloring Book). My presentation actually induces gasps of astonishment. And it shares a powerful message about reading, which influences kids in a positive way.
For anyone who is interested, my creative partner Leslie and I are about to release a PDF book called "Theme It Up!" Everything you need to know about creating, performing, and profiting from themed shows. Check our website for details in the next couple of weeks. Arthur Stead http://www.arthurstead.com |

I do the coloring book as this: Show pages that aren't colored in. Tap crayons onto it and color the pages. Then I go into a color eating monster routine from Dan Harlan. When you draw the mouth your crayon get ate. Then I say the monster (or dino) is still not full then vanish the crayon by tapping them on his mouth. Then say he still isn't full. Tap the coloring book on him and then show the all the color has vanished from the book. I end with a pulling a colorful coil out of the monsters mouth (usually say it looks like he is going to be sick). That's the routine I do.

In schools, libraries and other educational institutes I always do the following: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckBLZFiEuUM When I am in a wealthy area for a birthday party I do the same. But instead of using the words "How your teachers got rich" I use the words "How the birthday child's parents got rich". In creates a lot of laughs as the guest looks at the birthday child's parents. Adults always clap because they like what the effect represents.
In religious institutes I use the Holy Bible Coloring Book. I speak about doing Sunday School homework. |

You may want to purchase Danny Orleans new DVD about entertaining children with magic. He has a fantastic coloring book routine that is quite novel. IMO, he takes the standard coloring book routine to an entirely new level.

I do the magic coloring book at shows for 8 kids and under. I do the acrobatic silks for every single show I do, in fact adults love it the best. The vanishing ketchup bottle works for all ages too. A classic trick in the hands of a pro always works. The Danny Orleans DVD is great for beginners, but if you have done at least twenty shows in your life he has very little to offer.

When I saw Danny's routine I was blown away! I got a Spider Man coloring book and made the coloring book just as Danny instructs and it is fantastic! I've done the routine about 30 times and not one kid has said "I've seen this," when I pull out the book (like they always did with the standard coloring book). Josh

Al,
You're certainly entitled to your opinion. However, based off the glowing reviews I've seen in numerous magic magazines and Mac King's endorsement, I think your way off base this time. That said, I do enjoy some of your postings on the Magic Café. Thanks, Gerry |

Bowers, the "Birthday Magician's Handbook" by Dave Fiscus has a great interactive routine for the Magic Coloring Book.

Another idea on the coloring book is make your own. I have a friend here in Washington who is always jumping on the latest hot comic or movie cartoon character and making a coloring book out of it. The kids aren't expecting the coloring book effect when you bring out a Spiderman or Ironman coloring book. |

Actually I have some sympathy for Al's position. Overall I think the Danny Orleans DVDs are good but I am lukewarm about some parts of it. The show in particular needs some work in my opinion. Oddly enough I do agree that the colouring book routine is terrific and I also liked the Eugene Burger interview a lot.

For those of you interested in seeing my entire coloring book routine, without having to purchase my DVD set, you'll be able to watch me perform the entire routine in front of an audience of children on SUNDAY MAY 26 at 7pm Eastern Time. I am doing a lecture at http://www.penguinmagic.com where I will show footage from my video and break down the routine for you. The lecture will be discussing audience management strategies as well as some of tricks from my show. In addition, I'll show my favorite close up magic trick to do for children and their parents. You'll also get to see the magician's tables that I use and how I built them quite inexpensively without any special tools except for a staple gun. And there's more. If you can't join me on Sunday, the lecture is downloadable. If you can physically be at the lecture in Columbus, I will give you a set of my DVDs and you can decide for yourself if you agree with the rave reviews I've received from the reviewers in the major magic magazines in the US and Europe.

I also like David's idea of changing the front of the coloring book, make it more "real"
