Arthur Fords Spiritualist Church told her that the $10,000.00 price was preventing them from getting the Message and she should retract her offer. As soon as she did it was only a few weeks and Arthur came to her home with the correct Secret Word "BELIEVE" and the code it was hidden in ... Ford never even asked for the money.

Ford did NOT get the message by cold reading .. That's a good one Leo.... My off track bet would be that Houdini and Ford were sleeping with the same woman and the pillow talk transferred the information Ford needed to crack the code and the magic word BELIEVE!!!! But that's just a Devil's Advocate guess....

Or maybe Bess revealed the 2nd message--BELIEVE--to Ford. After he revealed the first message to Bess--FORGIVE--they hung out for some time as drinking buddies. She could have slipped up fron the gin and told him.

Bess and Ford were known to be social companions for a time. Ford had a problem with alcoholism his whole life. This is in the Doug Henning book on Houdini.

Yes--Dr. Leo Dretzka was the first physician who examined Houdini when his train arrived in Detroit. He recognized appendicitis and advised immediate surgery under his care at Detroit Receiving Hospital. Houdini refused.
