Dennis Loomis died a couple weeks ago, and I just wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed learning the Will Rogers snap knot from Dennis before he died. I will miss this great guy. I don't know if his DVD is still available, but if you did not learn this great rope knot from Dennis you really missed something special.
RIP Dennis

Hi Al, I'm glad you asked.
This project got me into Rope Magic. Dennis was coming over to our house when ever he came to Sacramento and he would show us the stuff he was working on for the video. He had done this stuff for years but Dennis was meticulous in his preparation. He was famous for his 1000 practice hash marks (to perfection although he never said so). I had always avoided Rope magic (other than the Will Rogers toss a knot) because as a dyslexic lots of rope effects just seemed all wiggly and hard to understand. Dennis showed me that a well done rope effect is very clear and his interest was infectious. I loved the stand alone quality of so many of the effects included. This allows you to interact in strolling situations instead of performing at people but it also allows you to make a routine of Ropes if you'd like. Dennis still had some if anyone is interested and it would help pay his final expenses. P.M me as this is not really the place to discuss this. Tom and I will really miss Dennis. -Mary Mowder |

Over the 53 years of our friendship, Denny and I worked on many rope bits. I was especially pleased when he told me his plans to produce a DVD on his knot routine.
When he asked to include "my" MOSQUITO (or NORWEGIAN YO YO)I was happy to say 'yes'. He had been of great help to me when I was chasing the Will Rogers knot, about 30 years ago! I had shown the MOSQUITO to Denny and Gene Anderson, eons ago, and they returned the favor. They gave me an excellent premise for the MOSQUITO. We shared a common interest in rope "juggling". My interest was started with Ralph W. Hull's, "Fifteen Minutes With A Piece Of Rope", in the late '40s. Denny's DVD is a terrific value to anyone who wants to add some rope knot material to his/her show. Milbourne Christopher went "around the world, with a piece of rope" back in the '30s and '40s. Denny would have given Milbourne a real challenge! I've been doing a 5 minute rope routine since "forever"! --and I thank Denny for his contributions to it. Yes, Mary and Tom, I first met Denny in the spring of 1960. He was one of my oldest friends. I'm having trouble writing this. I can't seem to see the screen.....

Dennis was such a kind and thoughtfulful human being. He made up and sent me a set of ropes at no charge that were perfect for the routine when I told him I was having trouble finding the proper ones. His passing was a shock and he will be missed.

I am jumping in here late, but I just received my copy of Denny's Knot Routine DVD. I have just watched the first two performances (one recorded for the DVD, the other a performance from the '70s).
I was very impressed with it. I love rope magic, and perform a three-phase routine in every magic show I perform (Prof. Nightmare, Fiber Optics, Cut and Restored). When I purchased the DVD, I was not entirely sure how I would incorporate the knots. However, I was struck by something Denny said: When he was doing a full evening show, the Knot Routine was used as a filler. If something went wrong, out would come the cord, and he would perform the routine until he got the sign that the problem backstage was fixed, and it was time to move on with the regular show. What I like about that insight is that once you have learned the routine (and have practiced and rehearsed and committed it to memory), then you always have something ready to go at a moment's notice. And, it packs very flat. I could have used this for my last show. I was scheduled to perform two shows at a day-long celebration for an organization that provides residential treatment to boys. The first show was at 3 p.m., but with everything going on, people were not coming in. Finally, at 3:30 p.m. with only a few in the audience, I started my show. (Because two people were engaged in conversation about the treatment of a boy in foster care, I stood to the side and just let them talk. I felt they needed that more than the show.) The same thing happened at my second show. The first people showed up 27 minutes late. Within about 10 minutes the room was packed. I think if I had the Knot Routine, I could have done some casual entertaining while waiting until the room filled up. I am going to have fun with this DVD. Bobby

For my two bits, this video makes it much easier to learn the snap knot, (or the Will Rodgers knot) and is worth it just for that, so the routine and everything else is a bonus.
It is not an easy trick to learn, which of course means that less people do it, but is one of the few tricks that looks better on a slow motion camera than in real time: it is actually more impressive when you know what is going on. |

Haven't seem his routine online. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egbl46uzdQ8 is someone doing the knot...
I use it as a "throw away" opener to a knot/ cut and restored rope routine. While it is true that it probably impresses magicians more than layman, I really like the feeling of the trick, and I appreciate the amount of hours that this video saved me on it... |

Matt
I have seen about five different handlings of this trick, and that demo sure looked like the technique I learned from Dennis. I do the snap knot with the long PN piece of rope for cub scout banquets. If I've had a few days to practice I like to do five or six snap knots one on top of the other. There are snap knot nuts out there who can do the snap knot with both hands at the same time. I'm kinda a one armed snap knot nut.

Jon Racherbaumer sent me a print out of a college "study" re: the SNAP KNOT or WILL ROGERS KNOT. The college write up called the effect: CHAOTIC DYNAMICS!!!!!
I have used it (mainly in HIGH SCHOOLS OR COLLEGES) for years. With a bit of build up, it ALWAYS gets a BIG MITT!! Dale Lorzo (former Ronald McDonald and another friend of Dennis) is helping to dispose of Denny's props and books. He tells me that he has some of the Rope Knot Routine DVD's left. I will look up Dales' email address and post it here tomorrow--unless Mary Mowder sees this and can get it on here sooner. If you have been following this thread, you are already aware of what those of us who knew Denny--or who know about the routine--think of it.

Thank you Dick and Mike for the notice about "The Dennis Loomis Knot Routine… Plus." Yes, there are still some new copies of Dennis' DVD available. My correct contact e-mail is DaleLOrzo@surewest.net. I can accept PayPal to make payment easy for you. As has been mentioned earlier in this post, there is a vast wealth of information for the magician interested in rope on this DVD. It should be in the magic library of performing magicians!
