I was looking for a quality table to do walk-around stuff with. Light tripod kinda thing. Any suggestions?

I have been lucky enough to find 2 tables that fit everything I need for a close up table. I’ll explain the first which you should have NO problem locating, and then the 2nd which you might have to look around for.
The first has a wooden edge on all sides, fits my close-up pad perfectly, comes apart in about 1 minute, packs flat for transporting, stands about waist level, and it only ran me $8.00. In fact I found it in the Dollar store. I’m talking about the TV dinner tray table. I throw a black cloth over the tray which has some different designs on it. And badda bing I have a nice durable close-up table. I’ve even seen them at Walmart with shelves underneath where you can put magazines. If you look at your local store, I’m sure you can find something, even a wooden video shelf could be turned into a perfect close-up table. The 2nd I found has a nice wooden lip around the entire table, has a huge tabletop, has 4 different trays underneath and looks like a night club style magic table. It is super strong and only weighs about 5 pounds, the only bad thing is that it won’t fold. But since I drive a pickup this isn’t a problem for me. I got this table for free since the store was throwing them out, I originally had 3 of them but painted and sold the other 2. These are really nice if your staying at a set spot, I’ve used this table for birthday parties where I’m in one spot. To find this you might have to look around, but if I can find another one, I’ll snag it for you. I can’t promise anything since I was in the right place at the right time, but I’ll keep my eyes open for you.

Another option is to use a waiter's tray stand. On top, place some type of board or perhaps a large waiter's tray. It's cheap, durable & set up is quick & easy.

Hey yakandjak,
I may have what you need. I produce a table that can be used close-up, parlor, stage, or walkaround. It folds flat and weighs about 8 lbs. It has many uses. I have one for my cups and balls routine. They are padded for coin work. Card spreads are perfect. The table top dimensions are 16 by 24 inches and stands 30 inches tall. You can use this table while sitting behind it or you can stand while using it. It can support up-to 250 lbs. The top is lockable when the table is folded out so it dosen’t tip if you lean on it too much. If you are interested, I will send you pictures of it. Just let me know! |

Yakandjak,
I use -- among other things -- a music stand with the top cut off and an adapter added so that it screws into a flange on the bottom of one of my attache cases. Ultra-light, very sturdy, easily carried. For heavier work, I use a tripod from a home movie screen. Cut off at the top, adapter added, etc. But make sure the upright rod is round, not square or triangular, as some of them are. The round is much easier to fit to the adapter. cheers, Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com |

Hey Burt,
If you're going to put your rep out there on your close-up table and can afford the steep $450.00 price tag I highly recommend the Norm Neilsen Roll On Table. It's simply the best and Alain Nu uses his in all his high paying walk around gigs. Just my $450.00 worth, Doug

Just a quick question: where are you guys working that you have room to set up a table! Isn't it cumbersome?

I use a Viking Tripod base with a hardwood cutting board as a top. The Viking base is the only one that I've found that will fit in my hip pocket! It stands at least 30" tall and is very light.

I agree about the tv tray idea I used one and modified it a great deal. It works better than I expected. I am a really tall guy so I just set mine on the top of my magic cases. This is a great idea.
Now I will pull this rabbit out of my hat and oooops hey come back here

It seems like a music stand would fall over if bumped. These are usually quite light weight but I always thought they were in danger of falling, even just with music on them, let alone a close-up table on top?
how wrong am I? ...and what is the viking thingy?

That is so amazing, Peter's plan for a table is the same as the one that I am building right now. Where did you find the adapter? I love your idea.

The music stand I think they are refering to could be cymbal stands. That is what I have used in the past. They are quite heavy but really sturdy. Considering a guy could be banging on them all night during a rock concert. You might be thinking of the portable music stands you see highschool kids using to hold their music. Highly unworthy considering they are made from modified aluminum foil. LoL.

I noticed that Cellini had a great table when I went to his lecture. It was very skinny when folded up. It looked like a black board, he picked it up and a long leg folded down, which was a cross of two metals. They crossed like a '+', making it very strudy. There were the suit symbols cut into the metal.
Does anyone know where I can get one of these? Please PM me if you do! -Casey |

The table you saw Cellini using is a Harbin Table. Several versions of these are available from various dealers. I recommend the metal like you saw as they are very light and open automatically. Expect to pay around 200.00 - 250.00 for one if when you find it.
On those rare occasions that I have to do walkaround I either use the Harbin Table or else a Norm Nielson cane table that I have rigged an elegant cigar box to fit on so I have both a place to store props and a small performing surface.

At the moment I am working on producing a close up table top that will fit the Eureka table base. The project is still in the mock-up stage and hope to get a few demos available soon. And I promise that this will not have $400.00 or MORE price tag like some that have recently hit the market. More info when the project gets close to finish.

A nice folding stand that can support a briefcase or small rectangular table top can be had at WALMART in the states in the laundry section. They're folding laundry hampers and are like lightweight versions of the waiter stands. They run under twenty bucks and the aluminum model is about 29" tall, the wooden one is 33". I got the wooden one, left the canvas laundry bag off, and added a second strap to the top.
While there, look in the kitchen and bath linen section and you can find a 'stars, suns, and moon' motif tapestry table runner (I stitched one so that it runs on both sides of the stand, forms a pocket under the briefcase area, and has a big tassel on each side), a tapestry placemat (attached to the outside lid of the briefcase with doublesided campertop tape that provides cushoning), and a large half-circle rug (attached to a plywood lapboard to make a table top, also using the thick double sided tape). Since the tabletop is kidney shaped, the tapestry needed to be trimmed then 'hemmed' with craft glue to keep it from fraying. In the WALMART fabric section I got some 1/4" gold piping as used on pillow borders, and 'edged' the tabletop with it, using thin double sided tape and wedging the bias tape along the piping in between the tapestry and the tabletop. Hope this helps! |
