I use the Eureka Table Base. Mak Magic makes it. It is a metal tripod. The legs are adjustable. It is stong. You might wanna try placing a detachable briefcase on it as Nostromo describe earlier. They also make black art felt table tops for the stand also. It has red velvet around it with gold fringes. They also make another top that has secret slits on top to hide cards.

I always have problems with this. If I find a table I like and would buy, it is usually too high for the spectator's field of vision and if it is in their field of vision, I have to bend over when performing and it hurts my back A LOT!!!!

I use an "X-base" with a removeable top. This is rock solid. The best part about this base is that it is adjustable for height, width and for non-level floors or surfaces. I encourage you to check it out at ZZounds. I've been very happy with mine!

The magic shop I do business with has informed me that they have seen a prototype of a new close-up table that sounds very promising. I believe that the price mentioned was around 200.00. (That price is not written in stone). As soon as I hear word that they are being produced (I can't recall the manufacturer) I will post it. I too am looking for a close-up table, and this sounds like an awesome one. I will inform once I hear something. Check back with me.

Like Bobcape, I also use an piano or X base stand from one of the many music shops. Adding a wooden plank with black or red velour coverings gives you not only plenty of table top room but still looks classy. Nice thing about them is they are adjustable for various heights.

I use a percussionist's side table, used for holding and controling bells, tambourines, blocks, triangles, etc. Very sturdy. Has a small lip around the top to keep things from rolling off, when used as a stage table, and I have found that I can velcro a flat top to it for close-up. The table adjusts from about 2 1/2 ft high to my waist level - I'm 6'3" tall.

I have the banjo table from the Collector's Workshop and I've attached velcro to the top and to this I place a ATM case about 1/2 of the size of a briefcase and it takes up little room and is stable enough to hold the case. It all folds up in a small denim bag and only weighs a couple of pounds. ($150.00 price)

A great place to start is in the drum accessories section of a large music store like Mars. Eveything is made to be moved and shipped. EMT joints will work to modify most of them to take water pipe threaded flanges etc.
Another place to look is the thrift shop for bases to office chairs and stools. They roll! They will hold a lot of weight. They are very stable. They are CHEAP! Some look very expensive and professional. They were built to be abused. You get to see it first. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I use a collector's workshop collapsible table that I purchased secondhand for $50.00. I added a few strips of industrial strength Velcro to the top of the table to accommodate a brief case. It folds up very easily and weighs next to nothing. Lately, I've switched the briefcase for a small make-up case about 1/4 of the size of the brief case.

You can also purchase a screw in flange, the thread size of a microphone holder. A folding Mic stand with a tabletop (or threaded flange mounted on case) works great using this method. If you know that the "joint" you are working has a mic stand then you need carry in even less.
You can remove a section of a Banjo table and it will be a little lower to accodate the height of a small case put on it (as described) and bringing it back to table height. Just cut the bungee cord remove a tube and tie a new knot.

Regarding the Banjo Table from Collector's Workshop:
I purchased mine about five years ago and it is light, extremely portable, classy-looking and well made, plus it comes with a nice bag. The only problem is, the surface is not quite big enough (IMHO diameter-wise just short an inch or two) and it would have to be covered with some sort of felt so items (especially a brand new deck of cards) would not slide off so easily. An additional note: this table is especially for strolling/street shows, it is not very sturdy due to the design of the three legs. As a matter of fact, a spectator accidentally leaned on it slightly and as a result, bent the tubing which I easily fixed. Still, I don't regret purchasing it and continue to use it for my shows when it's appropriate. naturalturn (Ray)

I saw a portable karaoke stand on hytechgear.com that is built to hold a TV plus two mics and a drink shelf. A techie tool or close-up case would sit on it and look high tech if not classy. The base has an adjustable post, 5 folding legs and has casters. The mic holders can be used to hold a wand or other props. And the drink tray can be used to store cups and balls, or even a drink if you get thirsty. A velvet cloth drape could be added to hide the small shelf and add a place for your favorite magic images, or a name plaque.
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.

Would the Harbin table work effectively with a close-up pad either glued or fixed with velcro to the table surface? Is this table of sufficient size for general card and coin work?
Why is it that on one side of the world a person looks at a picture of the Grand Canyon and says, "it looks so real." At the same time on the other side of the world a person looks at the Grand Canyon and says, "it looks like a picture."
