Carved Basswood Vintage Modified Craig Lovik Ventriloquist Dummy.
This figure recently appeared on eBay. It reminds me a little of Elmer Fudd. . Click here to view attached image. |

Donald, whatever would give you that idea (now place a bid!)?
Another Lovik shot down for the gap. I don't blame you. But I just love these figures. They were the hot figures when I was a kid. Well, they were the ONLY figures I knew of when I was a kid. I was lucky enough to meet Jim Barber on the Opryland Cruise Boat show in TN when I was around 8 (still have pics) and he had an awesome living mouth Lovik. He did walk-around in between shows and he was SO GOOD (still is). I remember thinking that puppet had to be alive. (Ok, so I was no Einstein.) Later, I saw an article on the Vent Convention in a Highlights magazine article I think -- and somehow I remember my mother sending away for a catalog full of these Lovik classics. I also remember my dad laughing when I asked him to spend $5-$600 for a ventriloquist figure. My dreams were shot down and I moved onto other things like skateboards and girls. So, since re-taking an interest in vent years ago, I've owned quite a few of them just because I could, LOL. Take that, Dad! Just remember. You might not like the gap, but the gap likes you. |

I've always liked the Loviks, I've had a number of them over the years, just have a living mouth one now and one of his lowest line figures - the ones with the plastic over the eye openings (which actually doesn't have the neck gap). The gap never concerned me, they're dummies. While there have always been people making figures that didn't have the gap, I think it was less a concern at one time than it is now. Now the focus seems to be on making them so perfect and lifelike they almost look like they could talk without you. Personally, I have no problem with having a dummy that looks like a dummy and needs me to make it seem alive.

Original cartoon Elmer Fudd was loosely based on Robert L. Ripley...believe it or not.
I thought that was interesting anyway. |

The usual history of Elmer Fudd is that he developed out of a character named Egghead, who was created in 1937 for Warner Brothers cartoons by Tex Avery. Egghead was even called Elmer Fudd in one cartoon in 1938. But the true Elmer Fudd character (with the bald-head appearance for which he became known) actually emerged in 1940 in a cartoon called "Elmer's Candid Camera" in 1940 by Chuck Jones (also at Warners). Elmer was thus a redesigned Egghead, just like this figure was a redesigned Lovik. . Click here to view attached image. |

My first reaction was Mickey Rooney!
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I dunno...I was just reading this new Ripley Biography.
"Ripley was the model for Elmer Fudd, who was initially introduced by Looney Tunes in the late 1930s as a speech-impeded and stuttering character named Egghead. One cartoon, “Believe It or Else,” featured a bucktoothed Egghead wearing a loud suit and spats. The narrator introduces the world's loudest hog caller, the human basketball, and the world's fastest woodcutter. “I don’t believe it!” says Egghead/Fudd, who also made a cameo appearance in a faux South Seas travelogue entitled "The Isle of Pingo Pongo." http://www.biographile.com/believe-them-......y/16450/ and here is the actual cartoon... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77I79lLCT0A |

Oh, so Ripley was actually the model for Egghead. ! ?
I don't quite see it, but okay. Incidentally, the figure sold for $395. A great deal for the buyer! . Click here to view attached image. |
