I loved the music Coppefield used for his "Grandfathers Aces" routine years ago It was PERFECT for that effect.
I want the music for my own listening pleasure and want to buy it from Itunes. But I don't know the name of the piece. Does anyone know the name of that orchestration, or even better, have a link where I can get it on Itunes? Daff

Hi Daff,
The song is called "Love Theme" from the movie soundrack "Cousins" and was composed by Angelo Badalamenti. Here's a link to the movie soundtrack version : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2zHgyPw52k Enjoy ! Oliver. |

I now have it on my phone and am listening to it. That score is so evocative.
I have to admire the genius of Copperfield and his team to find just the PERFECT musical score for a given effect. The music takes a good effect, combined with David's impecable sleight of hand and transforms it into an unforgettable masterpiece of theatre.

Created and scripted by Canadian Gary Ouellette, and first performed by Alain Choquette in his show.

Don't admire his "genius" to much . This is the same music Alain Choquette used in the original version of "Grandfathers Aces" know as Dream of Aces. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRnz25UsC6M It was worked by Gary Ouellet who coincidently also worked for Copperfield. Rumour had it Alain wasn't too happy that Copperfield used the same music in his version. You can purchase Dream of Aces from the Camirand Academy here http://www.camirandmagic.com/mv_001d.html (link also includes a brief history)

Wonderful performance by Choquette. The (classic) method and handling of the Ouellet/Choquette routine are superior.
It's all in the reflexes.

Man, I got FLAMED royally, when I mentioned I performed Dream Of Aces using this music! I was accused of violating copyright. It left such a bad taste in my mouth, I stopped performing it. The DVD and cards sit up on my shelf.

The only copyright violation would be the use of the music in performance without possession of a valid license to do so.
If you like the routine, it might be worth it to buy the license and have at it!

Even if you have purchased the performance rights to the effect/method, I believe lifting someone's scripting and choreography would be a copyright violation. But even if it's not illegal (even if you'd properly licensed the music and you're fully within your rights to perform the effect "as seen on TV"), it's most definitely unethical, and it would NOT be "worth it" to deal with other magicians' condescension for essentially stealing a presentation. Sure, it's a beautifully-done routine (by both Alain and DC), but why not give it one's own twist? Use one's own music selection & choreography? Copying a presentation like that is just so... blah. How can you feel good about yourself, as a performer, when doing this? This isn't meant as a personal slam to Doug, or anyone else... I just don't understand why you'd be motivated to rip-off someone's routine like that, knowing full-well the verbal beat-down you'd receive if other magicians were in your audience. I mean, that takes some serious balls. </rant> |

Yep! That's why it sits up on my shelf! I haven't performed professionally in almost forty years. That routine was one I did for friends/family. However, no WAY will I use that music, or any other copyrighted stuff. The flaming I got was from someone I respected and admired. It REALLY hurt!

Now I'm confused! It must be age. Let me get this straight....if you buy a routine/presentation which was, and is, still commercially available, as Copperfield did, you cannot perform it because he was...what...seen by more people doing it?...bought it before you?...boy, magic dealers are going to like that idea.
The Dream of Aces is a scripted routine, it is not a method, Gary acknowledges in the book that the Macdonald Aces have been around for a long time. I do agree you should get the rights to the music, whatever piece you use. On this Gary in the book suggests a lesser known piece rather than a popular one, I am sure you could even find a good piece in some of the royalty free music that is now available. Also at glancing at my copy of the book, there is no presentation limitations put on the routine, so if you buy the book, you have as much right as anyone to perform the routine/presentation (as outlined in the book). Exactly, Blair! Precise;y the point I was trying to make.
Is it BETTER to re-write the patter? Depends on your skills as a writer, I suppose. Is it best to make changes so that it fits your style (if it doesn't already)? Absolutely! I will be using Robert Baxt's "Baxt and Boy and a Bucket" routine in a show tomorrow...EXACTLY as written! I am a bad guy for doing so? Nope. Robert is a professional comedy writer...WHY on earth would I change what has been proven to work?

It's the MUSIC I have a hard time with. That theme from Cousins fits Dream Of Aces exactly! Oh, but because I posted that I performed it at my girlfriend's...Man! I was a no-good thief! That's what the poster told me in an open forum! No ethics. I PM'ed him to explain, and he told me off ROYALLY, and told me never to PM him again!
I still am stinging from that. It was several years ago, too. He's not the only one angry at me for something like that. Back in 1988/89, I edited Pink Floyd's "Great Gig In The Sky" featuring that haunting vocal by Clare Torry. I edited to just over two minutes, and I performed The Zombie to it. I mentioned it here in the Café, and got PM'ed by someone else. Same thing. Bad, bad, BAD! Sca-REW it! I don't do magic to music any more. I'll be .damned if I'm gonna pay for rights. I don't perform for money and I don't perform for the general public. We still have the Ethics Police out there. They're watching! Doug |

Well, if it's just for friends/family, that's an entirely different story. Personally, I have no problem with that, and nobody else should, either. It's like doing karaoke at a private house party; who cares?
However, Blair & Mike, I think the larger issue - if not one of legality - is one of creativity and conscience. If you're cool with doing off-the-shelf hack presentations, without putting any of your own thought or personality into them, more power to ya. It's just not my thing, and I don't understand why anybody would want to do that. It's that type of incestuous practice that gives the public an attitude of "seen one, seen 'em all" regarding magicians. It's harmful to the craft. But on a more selfish, egotistical note, it feels SO much more satisfying to be applauded for something you created, than for something you cloned. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Sorry if I come across as a bit abrasive - it's just something I'm passionate about. Peace to all. P.S. Doug - do you have a link to that thread? I'd love to read it. Sounds very entertaining, especially with this back-story. |

Durden:
"Hack"? Incestuous"? REALLY?!?!?!?!?!? Awfully inflammatory language for someone who doesn't even know me. I truly hope you aren't HALF the jack-wad you come off to be.

Sorry Durden....but you are in the wrong. In the process of trying to say you weren't calling Mike a hack, you still sarcastically called him sparky. So I'll use your own wisdom against you...Judging by how you didn't call him a hack only to call him another name seems to show you did intend it for him in the first place.
