The last few weekends I was out working on my street show. While the show is good so far, all but two routines I do (Fiber Optics/The Thing) requires one or more spectator's assistance. I'm curious what the group here would suggest for a nice, solid routine to be done solo, without calling on a volunteer for assistance. I'm not looking for "pet routines" or secrets, just some suggestions?
Thank you in advance!

Hi Kendall, welcome to the Sidewalk Shuffle. I´ve just had the chance of enjoying some of your other Posts.,..appreciate it.
yeah, "Routines for No-one".,.. ah, you´re starting at the top! These are, in my opinion, without a doubt, the hardest situations to master. Maybe,.. they make `the Master´,... not sure. But I´ve only seen `the Great´pull `em off. I believe, in these moments, especially in THESE moments; you have to perform what entertains YOU the most. YOUR having fun, is contagious. hmm, maybe not just confined to "having fun". But doing something that demands your full attention, concentration, energy. This Tension, is very attractive. Part 2: A different twist, there used to be a guy, here in Europe, Phil Free. He died Febuary 1, of last year. One of "the Greats". His Show consisted largely of performing to an `Audience´ that wasn´t there! As well, he constently reacted to situations that weren´t happening!! One of his `Classics´, was having a discussion/argument with a lady in a first floor window behind him. She simply didn´t exist. It was fantastic. An audience of lurchers always built,... sometimes it took longer,.. but, inevitably, folks stopped. It was hard walking by this seemingly crazy guy who was having a perfectly normal day, as a Street Performer. hey, take Doug Henning´s advise, "..create Wonder." Give it a chance,.. the Magic will happen. smiles, gallagher |

I think is is a great question.
Having a few of these up your sleeve is a great idea. I usually use a spectator for most situations but here are some that I can and do use with nobody when needed... billiard balls rings prof. nitemare in my stand-up act my opener is a solo routine as well but it's not a commercial trick. Everyone should be able to do 15 minutes solo.

Thank you for your imput!
I wish I could have seen Phil Free's routine, sounds like a gas! I am working on a number of things without audience participation. I was just curious what other's thought. I guess I could have worded that better. I do my version of Pop Haydn's ring routine, so that is audience assisted. I also have my prof. nightmare routine that is a mix of Fiber Optics/Sandsational/Slydini that works very well BUT the last 2 weeks I've noticed I'm losing a good chunk of the crowd during it. I'm reworking it now to fit the street better. My other issue that I'm working on is almost all of my "Solo" stuff I set to music and where I'm performing, recorded music is not allowed, even soft background music. So I'm working on either silent or silent versions. As I said, I'm more curious of what you guys like. I am definately not looking to copy anyone.

I have a few pieces I do on my own.
A single rope routine- Baiscly fibre optics but a single rope. I have lots of gags running in it. A coin routine. This I do alone and drop the coins on the floor. I do pull people in and get them to hold metal trays for the coins. I also have this very comical set of muiltyplying bannas thta are just fun. Just chucking a few ideas out hope this helps.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |
