A colleague of mine is writing a paper that incorporates the history of magic.
He asked about the top 10 classic effects in magic. What do you think are the top 10 classic magic tricks? Andy |

While I also agree with Michaels list, I agree with Meridianfan that the Ball and Vase should be on the list. Almost every person interested in magic has this in their drawer and it's one of the first things everyone picks up as a child and piques their interest, leading to a lifetime of joy and entertainment.

I can think of several more, so it may be that a list of classic effects would have to exceed ten. I agree about the ball and vase. I suppose only a tallied concensus would effectively give us the top ten.
Some others: Die Box Straight Jacket Escape Color Changing Silks Torn & Restored Newspaper Sponge Balls The Rising Cards Production Cabinet Sword Box (or Basket) Hindu Rope Trick (even though very seldom seen) Pick A Card Flower Production Vanishing Cane Floating Ball Dancing Handkerchief Livestock Production (or Vanish) Disappearing Milk (pitcher) Multiplying Billiard Balls Vanishing Lady Passe Passe Bottle & Glass The list can go on.

Bruce Elliot in one of his books (maybe "Classic Secrets of Magic"?) presented two lists compiled from a survey I think in _The Phoenix_.
One list was the tricks/routines most often performed by magicians. The other list was the tricks/routines that magicians most liked to see. I don't have the book handy right now, but maybe someone can check their copy and add some comments. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez P.S. I just checked the Magicref pages at: http://magicref.tripod.com/books/elliottclassic.htm and yes, it was _Classic Secrets of Magic_ that has 1) a list of best-liked effects in magic and 2) the 20 most performed effects by American magicians It might be interesting for one of the current magazines to run a similar survey to see if the tricks in the list have changed over the decades. It would also be interesting to compare a survey done with American magicians with magicians in other parts of the world.

BTW, Andy, I'm curious as to where your friend's paper will be published. Will it appear in one of the trade magazines like _GENII_ or _Magic_ or is it part of a master's thesis for a college degree of some sort? I'm sure many of us would be interested in reading it when it's published.
Bruce Elliott's book was published back in the 1953, so I'm guessing that there would be some substantial changes in the list, if only because new tricks and routines have come out since 1953. Also, I think print publishing (both books and magazines), television broadcasts, the Internet/youtube and the advent of instructional video will have had an impact on the list. In Elliott's day, one of the primary venues for seeing a wide variety of magic acts was magic conventions. The coming of cable television and the Internet will surely have had an impact on the number of performances viewable from all over the world. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

I would also imagine a huge difference if you surveyed over 30 versus under 30. The face of magic and what is popular today is more closely associated with slick video ads online than any of the stone age resources we learned from.
 I can only imagine the amount of magic that is learned and ultimately placed on lists of favorites that now comes, at least in initial contact, by way of smart phones and i-pads.

I think all listed are in top ten, but missed Thumb Tips many effects.

I am thinking that the following would certainly qualify but of course, it is rather difficult to agree on a list of ten due to our experiences and opinions being varied. My choices are based on what many of us started with when we began our journey into the art of magic.
