Kevin - Bill Wisch is awesome. Thank you for that clip. Do you know if his or Slydini's method available? I like how simple and direct it is.
Thanks, Dennis |

Never like the oil & water storyline / analogy. I have Anthony Owen's effect but got my own cards printed simply with the words 'HEAVY' & 'LIGHT' on them. The heavy cards sinking to the bottom makes more sense to me.

The suggestion that something analogous is true for cards is likely to be viewed by the audience as, at best, a weakly ironic idea, or even just plain dumb.” This is, in fact, exactly what Juan does. |

OliveroG, I love what you said about using the effect to illustrate something that happened in a dream. In a dream impossible things can happen, but duplicating those impossibilities in front of an audience's eyes -- that's magic! All of the those presentations that try to "explain away" the effect move it in the wrong direction. They may be humorously entertaining, but they detract from rather than enhance the magical appearance of the illusion. The dream illustration idea is great. Thanks OliveroG and everyone else who described a truly effect-enhancing presentation idea. Those were the ideas I was looking for.
Magically yours,

On November 1, 2005 I posted a routine on the Perverse Magic thread of the Genii Forum (it’s still available for view) called “They Won’t Mix” which had this presentation:
1 The magician pauses in the course of doing some effects for spectators opposite him at a table to bring out a new deck of cards with an unusual back pattern. “I’d like to use a new deck but I always have a problem with these kinds of card.” The magician opens the deck and shows it in new deck order, separated by suits. He moves the cards around so that the reds are all together and the blacks are all together and he shuffles the deck but then shows the deck is still separated reds and blacks. “See? Somehow I can’t shuffle these cards.” Again he shuffles and again shows they are still separated reds and blacks and he shrugs in not understanding. 2 The magician takes a few red cards and a few black cards and interlaces them so they alternate red, black, red, black, red, black etc but when he deals out the small packet again the reds are together and so are the blacks. This is repeated two times. 3 Finally the magician gives the full deck to a spectator and asks her to shuffle but when she does the magician is exasperated to find the deck still separated by color. Frustrated he puts the deck away. |

Well here's something I came up with a few years ago. Given the premise, it's only fair to share it with others. I'll probably be the only one that does it though.
(picking out cards from the deck) Alex, This is a trick for my older brother, Steve. He’s a communist. So far as I know, this is the first communist card trick. It’s okay Alex, you don’t have to be a communist to enjoy this trick. But you’ll enjoy it even more if you are. The Rich and the poor (inserting the black cards among the red) Rich, poor, rich, poor, rich, poor, rich, poor. In every continent and in every country Rich. Poor, rich, poor, rich, poor, rich poor. In every town and city But the Bible—and my communist brother says: It’s harder for a rich man to enter heaven than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle. (gesture, show the separation) Stay out, stay out, stay out. But heaven can’t wait, Alex and neither can we. (mixing the cards) Back in this world, they’d like you to believe that everything is fine With housing, healthcare and opportunity. But we know the truth: (gesture) There’s a gap when it comes to basic fairness, and we live separate lives. (show the separate cards) My brother calls it class warfare. Can we ever come together, or will there always be that separation (place packets at right angles) But listen closely and you’ll hear a sound, the ringing of revolution. (pushing cards together) In Cairo, in Tunisia, and maybe now in America. (turning over the first row of cards) And then all of us, black and white, rich and poor, people of all nations (turning over second row of cards) Will love, prosper, have our health, with liberty and justice for all. A trick for my brother.

Creative presentations aside, I don't think the oil and water needs much in the way of exposition. It's pretty obvious what happens and so long as the spectator is convinced the cards are mixed it's pretty obvious how impossible the effect of the trick is.
The example of "It Can't Be Done Any Slower" is an example of this. He simply shows that he's mixing the cards, and doesn't point out the separation because the audience can see it clear as day. So why point out the separation? Just reveal it. Also his presentation is centered around the tag line,"It can't be done any slower" emphasizing that the challenge is he's doing this right infront of your eyes as slow as it can possibly be. The routine itself is superbly structured with each phase builing on the other and because of this he can do more repeats than any other oil and water routine I can name (at least that's entertaining all the way through) The strength of Rene Lavand's presentation is in it's simplicity and artistic merit. The routine itself is killer, but his presentation is rather stark in comparison to those who try to create elaborate story lines justifying the actions of simply mixing the cards. It's like the ambitious card, who cares what you call it. You don't need to name the card. Whether you call it the elevator card, ambitious card, or whatever it's still an effect that speaks for itself and doesn't require an elaborate story to justify it's existence. Sometimes it's better to let the magic happen without speaking more than is needed.

I heard from a friend that anecdotal evidence is actually quite reliable. |
