I watch Everybody loves Raymond every morning,
and today there was the episode where Frank and Marie are going to move to a retirement community in New Jersey. Marie offers to sell Robert and Amy the house with these words: "You can buy our house for the same amount we bought it (40 years ago), $26,000!" There is a big amount of laughter from the studio audience when she says that. I guess it's something with the price of the house. Now since I'm not familiar with the U.S. house market or what $26,000 for a house meant 40 years ago, I need a little help understanding what was so funny with what Marie said. Please help me, and remember I'm not American, so be nice, because I feel I lack some knowledge here |

My parents bought a house in 50's for $24,000. Today that house sells for about $350,000. There is your answer.

My grandfather bought the two bedroom, single bath Queens, NY row house in which I grew up, in 1926 for $6000.
When my mother passed away two years ago I sold it for $275,000, and it was beat up.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

I'm a native speaker and I don't get the joke either. Did the laughter sound like pleasant surprise (Oh, isn't this excellent!!)?

I'd like to see it again because there might be more to it. I do know Ray was a little miffed that Robert was getting the house so cheaply for a minute, but then they went back to being overjoyed that the parents were moving away. |

My folds bought a house in 1970 for $13,000. I would have to have seen and heard the delivery to understand what the audience was laughing at. As others have said, the price is extremely low for what it is probably currently worth but that doesn't seem to be a reason for making the line funny. Does the show use canned laughter by the way?

Never cared for that show. Was never able to sit through an entire episode. Didn't care for "Steinfeld" either but I managed to sit through a couple of those. "Everybody Loves Raymond," no, just couldn't stomach it.

I think I got it now, Frank and Marie is a little bit out of
sync with society, and didn't understand their house had increased its value. It would also have been funny if she said: "You can buy our house for the same amount we bought it (40 years ago), $350,000!" Thanks everyone! |

Don't like "King of Queens" either. Watched "Friends" forever and currently the only sit-com I go out of my way to watch is "Big Bang Theory." ("Friends" with physics formulas.)

Everybody loves Raymond is one of my most watched and favourite shows, as well as 'According to Jim'
I've just watched that episode here in the U.K., and I think I can answer your question. I don't think the value of the house has anything to do with it. It is simply that Raymond is the blue-eyed-boy with his mother, and poor old Robert always comes in for second best in anything that's going. So, I believe that it was because Marie wanted money from Robert for the house that caused the audience to laugh, as I did at this point as well. If it had been Raymond that the house was offered to, he'd probably have got it for nothing ! For what it's worth - that's my take on it. Great program ! |

Just getting ready to start watching ELR on NetFlix. Season One. Episode One. We seem to pick out a sitcom we have not seen much of in the past and then get hooked. Just finished watching six seasons of How I Met Your Mother which I found extremely well written and before that it was Big Bang Theory. Watching in order give continuity and adds to the enjoyment.

My Dad only made $10,000 a year and we lived pretty darn good. Bottom line is today the house I live in is just under $200,000 with two bedrooms, one bath, decent living room/dining room all on about 1/8 acre. I make just under $30,000 a year. It would take my Father two years to purchase his house. It would take me over 6 years to buy my house (my house is far from new). Iven

I just came to think about another episode I didn't really get.
It's the episode where Marie creates a statue. Now this time the explanation to my inability to understand is not cultural, I'm simply too stupid (or innocent) to understand What exactly does the statue depict? I understand it has something to do with a woman, but what? Is it the legs? Or is it a woman's... yeah, you get what I mean To my defense I have Tourette, and I often do not understand some pictures unless they are crystal clear, and Marie's statue is not crystal clear to me. So please, help me |
