I watch Everybody loves Raymond every morning,
and today there was the episode where Frank
and Marie are going to move to a retirement
community in New Jersey. Marie offers to sell
Robert and Amy the house with these words:
"You can buy our house for the same amount
we bought it (40 years ago), $26,000!"

There is a big amount of laughter from the
studio audience when she says that. I guess
it's something with the price of the house.
Now since I'm not familiar with the U.S.
house market or what $26,000 for a house meant
40 years ago, I need a little help understanding
what was so funny with what Marie said.

Please help me, and remember I'm not American,
so be nice, because I feel I lack some knowledge
here Smile

Is funnhy, because, so long many years have passed away ago, $26,000 being very big money, buying biggest my tea house. Now, much is value of tea house, mannhy more timeses than $26,000.

But, tea house was ver cheapo 40 years ago. $26,000 buying of ver biggest posh-pad.

So make for funnhy.

Marie thinking to make good money, selling for good price.....but really to selling way of cheapest, like of being cheated off alien with pockets around the hands.

It could also just be the reaction of a modern audience to the thought of finding a sizable home in the U.S. for under $100K. These days $26K might buy a decent cottage depending on the region of the country.

I was never a fan of "Everybody Loves Raymond".

Nor of "Seinfeld", "The Simpsons", "Friends", "Two and a Half Men", and so on. My loss, perhaps.
