Question for all of you: Any hints on how to make it easier to change between shows? During the summer I am mainly traveling with my Summer Reading show but there is the occasional week like this one where I have 2 summer reading shows one day, need to change over to a story telling show the next day, back to summer reading the third day, tomorrow is a birthday party show, and then Sunday a different show yet! Every time I change things I worry about leaving something behind etc. not to mention the hassle of hauling everything in changing things over and packing things back up only to have to do it again the next day! I am wondering if anyone has figured out an easier way to change between shows. Thanks!!

Lisa -
When I need to change shows, it usually consists of material rather than props and puppets. I'd think the easiest thing would be to create shows that use minimal prop variations and have those in a separate case. That way, when you are doing a reading show, you grab the reading case. Swap that for the birthday party case, etc as shows change. This keeps you from having to repack and reload everything. Another tip - have a packing list typed up and put it in a heavy plastic sheet protector fastened to the inside lid of your trunk. You can use a write-on/wipe-off marker to check off items as you pack them, wipe it clean and you are ready to use it again. This saves you the worry of forgetting props. Tom |

Thanks for the tips Tom - I was actually thinking about doing the case thing. I sort of have that already in place for my birthday party show and another one of my more popular shows. But as I was looking at my cases today, I realized that I do not pack them very effectively in order to make the change quickly. SO - tomorrow I am going to have a re-packing day and re-organize the show props into specific cases to make it easier.
The plastic covered list is another good idea - thanks! |

I agree, Lisa, with my friend Tom. I try to use the same equipment (puppets, props etc.) when doing a library show, and then having to switch to a daycare center or even a campground show. The material needs to change, not so much the puppets. I may have to drop one item from a show , but it's much easier than having complete changes with different puppets, props, etc. The change comes in your performing attitude and material. Don't fret..I learned that lesson the hard way too years ago!
