That thread is a good one. The short answer is that the legalities are complex. The ethics are fairly simple: for any one copy of a creative work sold their should be only one owner and only one user at a time. (They may or may not always be the same person.) In practice, this means only one copy in use.
It is always darkest just before you are eaten by a grue.
