Hi everyone,

My name is Kaitsu, originally from Finland and now living in Belgium.
I'm very pleased to meet you all.

My act is actually stand up comedy - maybe a little bit like
Louis CK, Bill Connelly, Jim Jeffries, Magnus Betner etc.
Story telling with ranting for an adult audience.

Many magicians have implemented fun stuff from the comedy side
to make their act even more entertaining, so I thought I should
try to get tips and ideas from your side to become better.

For some time I've been "lurking" on the forum, as I was constantly
referred to the Magic Café when googling for material about mentalism.
I feel adding some interesting aspects from mentalism would enhance
certain parts of my act.

My purpose is not to build an act on mentalism, but to spice up
the message I'm telling with some well timed mindjoggling. I hope nobody
takes offense in that, as I have great respect for everyone's specialty.

I would be very grateful, if I could get some ideas and guidance
in learning maybe 5 different "special effects" to variate depending
on the audience/material with my rants.

As my experience in mentalism is ridiculously limited, all ideas about
relatively direct and simple, but nevertheless effective techniques
I could be implementing in my act.

I'm new here, so I can't yet enter the areas where techniques are
discussed and explained. Naturally I want to respect the forum rules
about not discussing methods used "out in the open", so all ideas/tips/advice
that can be discussed here on the public side are very welcome until
I can enter the other side.

Greets,
Kaitsu

As a little addition, I've been checking Ben Harris'
Silent Running routine and just 2 hrs ago I bought
"The Revelation Effect" based on Millard Longman's
Acidus Novus.

Both look very interesting.

Welcome Caz,

And welcome to Magic.

I'm usually a little nervous in welcoming newbies who are looking for secrets but I can tell you are hooked.

This site really does not give out much in the way of secrets.
The Café excels in advice about what sources might yield the kind of info. you're looking for.
That can be a real Time (and money) saver.

You've already been led to the "Penny for Your Thoughts" forum from the internet searches.

That is the best area for the specific advice you need.

Use the Search function (upper Right in orange) to see if others have asked and answered your questions before.
Choose "Penny for your thoughts" in the forum choice. You may only search one forum at a time.

As you've seen it can be helpful to do your search on the web and just lick the link.

Good luck!

Moro Kaitsu!

Welcome! Great to have some more Fins here. I'm just a young magic hobbyist, not a performing pro or anything.
Just one question, you mentioned Jim Jeffries in your first post, I know a Rockabilly singer with that name. Would be very funny if he was same guy that you mentioned. Blaah, just talking nonsense, anyway Welcome again!
Heart full of Rock 'n' Roll and Magic.

Ms Mary,

Thanks for the welcome and the advice.

I've been reading Banachek's book and
it's full of ideas, but I'll follow
your advice also Smile

Jesse K,

Hep - The JJ I'm talking about is a
stand up comedian, but indeed some
rockabilly is great stuff - Brian
Setzer for sure and of the newer ones
of course the Danish boys (Volbeat).

Thanks for the welcome too.

Greetings all~! I just arrived back on the magic scene after a long bout. (uh...that sounds strangely austrailian,hmmm...oh well.) Anyway. I, like many others, got hooked on magic when I purchased my first magic book at a yard sale (a few houses down) for a dime...when I was probably in 2nd grade. I learned the classic "3 rope" trick (different lengths to same, the newspaper rolled up and milk poured in then unravel the newspaper and joila!...no milk and paper is dry! and a few dozen other tricks. BEST Dime I ever spent! My parents bought me one of those magic kits and I continued to excel (cup and balls, etc...)

There were no magic shops my parents knew absolutely nothing about magic, where to buy it or anything. The internet did not exist and I didn't do magic again until I was about 18 and a guy in town showed me a vanishing silk trick. I then found about the magic shop in Kansas City inside U.S. toy.

After I moved closer to the city several years later I joined the I.B.M., Ring 129 and met several magicians and became friends with a great magician and manipulator and who is known for inventing tricks and building illusions....the one and only Dave Emerson! We became friends and I went to his house as often as I could to buy and learn magic. He gave me a magic book that helped me greatly.

My second slight (the thumbtip being the first) was to purchase a Jeff McBride VHS Tape and go right into card manipulation. I wanted to learn some of the most difficult slights in magic first...for whatever reason. I practiced for HOURS at a time and until my muscles hurt and cramped. This was actually a few months before meeting Dave Emerson.

I then married a woman from Canada, adopted her 4 kids and got out of magic because I felt guilty leaving her there with the kids all week and she had no friends here in the U.S. yet and no friends and I was going to the magic club. So I thought I'd quit for awhile until she met someone.

I got busy working and providing for my family and somehow life passed me by. My dream of having my own Branson show in 5-7 years was gone and now here I am 15 years later getting back into good ole MAGIC! It was a mistake to get out. I probably would have made more money than in IT and had a LOT more fun. Oh well...20/20.

I am back and relearning card manipulation (I never forgot how to do a single card <grin>) I lost my job April 1 after moving to NW Arkansas, SO...I went online and started to research and hunt down some good magic. I have purchased somewhere between 600-700 dollars worth in the last 4 weeks and plan on starting to do birthday parties to start out. I used to do some restaurant magic years ago and don't know if I'll get back into that or not. BUT...I look forward to it all. I am 44 yrs. old and live very close to where Dave Emerson retired and I went to his house and purchased a little magic from him as well AND he is building me a little trick I can do at Birthdays.

Nice to be here at Magic Café I have been reading posts for some time but am glad to be here! Sorry for being so "long-winded". LOL

Your friend in Magic,
