Michael,
If they're actually refusing the cards, I have a feeling it's your scripting. Somehow you're transmitting that it's an option for them to take or leave the card. I perform Carl Andrews' version of Airmail Card (Jim Swain's version of Ortiz's Dream Card), where the card plays a role in a dream I had. The woman I'm performing for, plays the role of the woman from the dream. When the spec's signature is discovered on the folded card, it's natural to point out that it *must* be her card, "I've finally found you-the woman of my dreams-and I can give you your card back!" I've used this presentation for years and I've never had anyone refuse the card. It's the most natural thing in the world for the woman to accept, because of the scripting. (She may throw the card away afterwards, I have no idea, but she doesn't refuse it when I offer it to her.) Look back at your script and think about how you can rewrite it to strengthen the motivation for handing over the card. |

I have never had a card refused... but that's just because I don't ask whether they want it or not. I just give it to them, often with a sticker with my details attached. TO be honest, it could be that they leave it on the table or dispose of it as soon as they get home...

The only time I've had people refuse to keep cards is after doing card to mouth and I understand that and usually just offer it to them as a joke. But basically I don't ask. I just say this is your souvenir of the show. If you give them the choice it leaves them open to say no. Giving them this card means that they have something to remember you by. the reason they keep it is because it is magical in their eyes. There is no greater feeling than when people say they have your card on their wall or in their wallet or purse. I've even been asked to autograph the backs of some of the cards at the end. Talk about feeling like a rockstar.

When I hand them their card to keep I say "the last time someone didn't save their card, they had bad luck and died a horrible death".
It's subtle, but it lets them know the card is special. |

You could always say the card will give them 10% off a future booking?!

This past Tuesday evening, while working at the usual place, I passed a table of two when they stopped me and asked me to show them something. As I started a brief conversation with them, the man pulled out his wallet and started digging through it. He said the last time they had seen me was 10 years ago at a bar I was working at. Finally, he pulled out an old folded up Queen of Hearts with his name boldly printed on it. He said he was at the bar celebrating his 10th anniversary of being cancer-free. He had so much fun that he kept the card as a reminder of the night and everything that made it special.
While I have had several people pull their signed cards from purses, wallets, jacket pockets....and have heard countless comments of the card they STILL have on the refrigerator or on their dresser, I've not had a more special telling of a card signed by a spec. patrick |

Hello MichaelMystic
Happy Holidays... IMHO, I totally agree with David Fillary, a body-load which they pull out themselves adds a huge "power-punch" to an already powerful Effect & negates the need to offer them the card cause they already have it - I would highly doubt if most spec's would offer to give it back to you, the "psychological experience" is very strong. Try it, Bro, would love to hear your results with it! |

I find they are more apt to take the card if it has not been folded. When I do a me***ry fold they keep the card less often than when I do a card to wallet using a pa*m and the card is unharmed other than being signed. I think it has to do with the fact that the card is seen as damaged. Try doing a signed card effect such as card to wallet without a fold and see if you get a different reaction.

So many excellent tidbits in this one thread! I've just joined the forum and this is one of the first threads I've read. I hope many conversations produce this much treasure~
I let people select a card to sign by showing them the deck face-up. I encourage people do draw something, rather than write their name - giving a few nonsense suggestions like "a break-dancing penguin, or homer simpson, or a map from here to your house... anything you'd like, just remember, sometimes children see these cards " I keep the cards in the deck afterwards - they can create surprising moments when their drawing is revealed as the cards are often incredibly clever or thoughtful or cute. It is personal and gives the spectator an opportunity to really shine. At an event like a festival, by the end of it, there are decks full. I will now have two powerful finishers: plastic sleeves with business cards for busking and promo, and the whole-deck souvenir for special events... though I think some sharpie-gems and treasures will come home with me to a new shelf in my cabinet of curiosities. |
