I am very new to busking (but not magic). In fact, so new I haven't been out on a pitch yet. I've been reading books and blogs, watching DVDs, studying other performers on the street. One thing I cannot determine is if there are any rules (whether written/implied/common knowledge/professional courtesy) regarding how to interact with other performers? I understand if there is a drummer or musician you should not set up right beside them. What about other magicians? In my area there are a few places to busk and I've seen multiple magicians set up fairly close to one another. It seems like this would be counterproductive for both. Should you talk to each other and coordinate? Stakeout your pitch early and try to take the crowd away? Thanks for the insight.

Rules will be whatever local buskers - especially the magicians - figure out amongst themselves. So try to talking to the local buskers, find out information from them [check that it's true!] and see what you can work out together. Common sense suggests coordinating amongst yourselves so you get the best outcomes individually as a result.
Appealing to officialdom will probably work out bad for all involved, so I suggest skip that way of trying to resolve matters. Buskers should be able to sort out their problems amongst themselves. Grab your gear and get out there!!
The presentation makes the magic.

Hey Matt,...Wilkommen!,... and I´m glad you asked!!
,because MORE often then city officials slowing me down; it´s another `Artist´ throwing water in my fire. I believe, besides developing a nose to smell out Pitches; there´s also a `tickle´ one learns in regarding Energies. You can kinda feeeel the area, where a Show is "working" . An Aura of sorts. Simply put, "let the guy have it." Often, other performers come, set-up and start-up, on the `edge´. ,...ya, `cause they can feel it,... and want a piece of it. uhhhh, ....it´s like pulling the plug in a Jacuzzi. Naaaa,... it´s more like pinkeling in a Jacuzzi! Ruins everybodies´fun. And the waters just never taste the same. If there´s only one Pitch, wait `till the first guy´s finished; and explain that you´d like a shot in the pool as well. (this COULD be your next Magic Café question: "How do you get another `Artist´ to move?)(!). oh, while you´re getting your feet wet; learn, practice,... come to savour your Flexiblity. As a Sidewalk Artist, THIS is our greatest strength. Learn it. Practice it. ,.... it´s the secret to the Art. When you get good, you can drop your Hat. Create Pitches,... Circles of Energy. True. give it easy, gallagher. |

MagiCol: Thanks for the info. I guess talking to the other magicians is allowed!
Gallagher: Vielen Dank! Es gefaellt mir. I guess I just need to get out there and feel it and experience it. There is no book or DVD in the world that can substitute experience. |

Different pitches-different rules. if a pitch has no unwritten rules I peraonally try to stay away from other performers, and prefer other performers do the same unless they know how to build atmosphere.

If you can smell them, then you are too close!
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.

Get to know the other performers, if you are new and get to know the right people you might swap spots and/or take turns at the pitch. This is the best way to learn what works at your pitch, and as each pitch is it's own creacher you will be talking to a lot of people.
If not, and you still want to work that spot conceter... 1 is there act like yours (more magic) if so give some space. 2 (Be honest) is there act better than yours? if so watch them till you know why, then give them space. 3 will they stab you for crowd poaching? (not joking) give them SPACE. 4 get there early, back in the day I would hit the park 8am and still not be the first there, and you would not pull your first hat till noon or so. you may not have the same thing where you are but if the spot is good It is worth waiting for.
