Some of my best friends are liberals.

Mea culpa! I'd like to think that Landmark is with Bob, Magnus, Tom, and me, though.

Lighten up Mr Doyle. Yesterday's gig was just fine, tonight's show was outstanding. Now I'm off home with the missus. We need some time alone. Smile

So, last night you did a gig for some very, very powerful people, and today a royal personage requests your services for this evening. You are booked to see the Book of Mormon with your wife, who got the tickets for your birthday.

The gig is well paid, but not ridiculously so, and yesterday you were treated as a servant, not allowed to use the front door or the stairs. (There is a discreet elevator for lesser mortals).

What do you do, and what did I do?

What's wrong with being treated as a servant? You make it sound like it's beneath you. Maybe they judge entertainers as you judge servants?

I'd tell them I have a previous engagement and go to see the play with my wife. She'd be more important than them.

This is exactly what I would do. Family is more important than a performance.

How I was treated by my employer or how great my pay was is not part of the equation. I will not tell a Loved one that they are less important than my job.

You did the right thing.

Business before pleasure

This is not about business. It's about Love and Commitment to your Loved one. Your Wife gives you a gift out of Love, before any commitment is made to an employer. To throw that gift aside in order to take money from someone who really doesn't care anything about you, is a slap in the face of your Loved one. Love from other's and giving Love in return is the ONLY thing that really matters in Life. Corny? Yes but true.

Your answer depends on who you are. I don't think there is a wrong answer.

If you are a guy who puts career over family, you do the gig and many (probably most) very successful people choose this option.

If you are a guy who puts family over career, you go to the theatre, and many very happily married people would choose this option.

There is a wonderful book with the unfortunate title of How To Get Rich written by Felix Dennis, founder of Dennis Media and truly one of the richest men in the world who gives very good advice: Be careful before you decide you want to become rich. You will have no family, no children, no friends. But you will be rich which lets you buy your own island and do anything your heart desires.

I have to admit, as an entrepreneur I often choose work over family. I look at certain friends of mine who have a very happy and close family relationships and I envy that but they didn't have the career I had, and I had (have) a pretty cool career which I love.

Everything you do is a choice and each choice sets up the opportunities you have ahead of you.

Truthfully it seems like a fiddlers invitation. Oh look at the cute magician. Pass the O devours. And while at it pass it up which It seems as you did. Correct thing to do.
If I were to agree with you. Then we would both be wrong. As of Apr 5, 2015 10:26 pm I have 880 posts. Used to have over 1,000

That's a fact, Bob. When I was working on Holland-America Cruises in the early seventies (on the Rotterdam and the Statendam) all of us did a lot more than just our acts- I was the "Voice From the Bridge" (giving daily weather and activity updates over the ships' communication system), ran a game booth at the weekly "Dutch Country Fair," called Bingo games and wooden horse racing, was the late night DJ in the lounge, did tours of the bridge, acted as an emcee for other acts and occasionally worked the lights as well. That plus I did different mental acts in the Lounge Show, the stage show and the midnight late show in the Ritz Carlton lounge on the Rotterdam.
